My 13yo son has been wanting to go fishing at a small pond near our house for a little while now. Riding a bike with a pole sticking out can be done, but it is a bit of a hassle, so I'd been on the lookout for a decent travel kit, and this one looked like it would fit the bill. As it turns out, it has indeed been a good starter kit, and the fact that it came with two poles made it a pretty good value. As you'd expect, none of the components are going to be very high end, but they're perfectly functional, you just need to be careful with the rods themselves. Pros: + Very complete set with pretty much everything you need to head down to a body of water and fish. + The included tackle kit is a decent start, though you'll be updating it in short order. + The spinners are smooth and consistent without binding. + Included pliers work well, and make dealing with split rings easy. Cons: - While they are nice and lightweight, the telescoping poles themselves are fairly mediocre, and while they work and haven't broken, I do feel their longevity is suspect. That being said, for the price you're getting two of them, so… Overall, this has worked out pretty well as a starter fishing kit for my son. I've used one of the rods each time I've gone with him, and it has performed well for small lakes and ponds. While the quality overall is so-so, given the price I think that it is acceptable for a minimal use product, just don't buy this as your primary kit and you'll be fine. It would also make a great behind the seat addition to leave in any truck or car.

As a level set for this review - I'm a beginner. The community I live in has a few small ponds in different areas of the community. The backyard of my house happens to abut one of those ponds. I've seen people fishing in them before, but never had an interest until recently. I decided this year would be the year. As I wasn't sure if this was going to be something that my wife and I would continue with, I wanted something that we could use that was decent and allow us to get a taste, but that wouldn't break the bank if we decided that it wasn't for us. I saw this kit, and it fit the bill - exactly what a beginner would need. I ordered it immediately. When the kit arrived, I opened it up and took an inventory. Two rods, two reels, pliers, and a small tackle box with lures, hooks, etc. The reels come with fishing line already installed. You'll still need to install the reels on the rods, thread the line through the rod eyelets, and then install the swivels on the end of the line. All of that can be done quite easily with the help of the HUNDREDS of videos online to assist. Once completed, it was out to the backyard to see if I remembered ANYTHING from the couple times I went fishing several decades ago. Yes, I cheated and watched several ONLINE videos - which I HIGHLY recommend - even better if you have a friend who's a fisherman! So, how did my first foray to the pond work out? Well, let me just say that no fish were harmed in the making of this review! Even better, no humans were harmed in the making of this review. No trips to the ER for hook removal were required. In fact, it actually went well. After a short learning curve, I was able to start casting somewhat decently. I found the rod and reel worked very well. The bale was a bit stiffer than I remember, but that could just be it needs a break in. The rod extended and locked into position well. When we were done, it was easy to retract the rod and store it back in the case. The lures seem decent enough quality. Overall, I'm pleased with this set. I feel it's an excellent ENTRY level kit, or as another reviewer pointed out, a good kit to keep in the trunk of the car. I think this price is OK, and it's competitive with other kits currently available on Amazon. A good beginner set!
