Purchased and installed on 4/1/26. Had previously purchased similar model which certainly did not last 10 years but stayed with this brand since all brands had questionable reliability. This was a mistake! On the 18th of May around midnight it started beeping. After checking throughout house for signs of smoke I decided it was a malfunction and disabled it. Forget the 10 year sealed battery, it did not last 2 months! Similar complaints about the Kidde but I will get one that I can replace batteries and not depend on the “ 10 year sealed” battery. For something so important I do not understand the poor reliability from two supposedly dependable companies!

Easy to install. Slightly bigger than the one I replaced. I never seem to get 10 years out of these sealed 10 year batteries. Its ok though this brand performs well and I don't have to think about it again for at least 5 years.

This unit is turned on by special tabs when you twist it onto the mounting bracket. Unless you have that exact mounting bracket, it won't work with other First Alert mounting brackets. Also, once it is turned on, it's on. If you turn it off, it can never be turned on again. I don't know why they make them like that. The whole thing seems kind of stupid.

This is the 3rd one of these units I have had with the "10 year" sealed battery and none of them have made it even a full year. They also claim "no low battery chirps" but when they start to die, they just go off with 3 sets of 3 full blast alarms (same as an actual fire alarm) every hour. Without fail, this always happens in the middle of the night, and the only way to disable the low battery alarm is to permanently deactivate the unit with a screwdriver by snapping a plastic tab which is loads of fun to do when you are half asleep in the dark on a ladder and your adrenaline is pumping full blast because you thought the house was on fire. And one other major annoyance, is that with every revision of this product, (even with the same model number) the 3 units I have purchased all had different mounting bracket screw patterns, so you can't even re-use the same mounting ring if you decide to get a replacement. The other alarms I have in the house are the older models with replaceable batteries and they usually go a couple of years before the batteries need swapped out. I won't be purchasing any more of these models.

(1) The three First Alert SM210 smoke detectors I received in June 2026 were not compatible with the previous First Alert base plates from the model P1210's I purchased in 2019. For clarification, I had three First Alert smoke detectors in my house that I needed to replace. They were Model P1210. I read online that the latest First Alert version of this smoke detector, the SM210, would fit right on the P1210 base plate. In my case, not true. My P1210's were about seven years old. So, if you are considering the SM210 to replace a previous version, it may not fit the same base plate. Not a big deal, but it would have been nice if they made them compatible. (2) Installing the SM210 on the new base plate is as easy as installing the P1210. You can use ONE of the original mounting screws from the P1210, but you'll need to drill a second hole for the SM210. But the final test is confusing. I could not get my SM210 to pass the initial test. I took it down and noticed the activate/deactivate switch on the back appeared to be in the activate position. But the SM210 appeared to successfully go through the test in the deactivate position. After a call to First Alert, I learned the switch appears to be in the deactivate position but is really in the activate position, but has to pass beneath a small plastic tab to actually be in the deactivate position. (3) I got approximately seven years out of my 10-year P1210's before one of them started acting up. I just replaced all three.
