This slim, battery-operated smoke alarm requires no hardwiring for installation, making it an ideal solution for those who want to enhance fire safety without hiring an electrician. It features a built-in 10-year lithium-ion battery that provides continuous power for up to a decade. Equipped with an ultra-reliable photoelectric sensor, the smoke alarm detects smoke from slow-burning, smoldering fires while keeping false alarms to a minimum. A patented smoke entry system further enhances the detector's reliability by providing a direct path to the smoke sensor. It definitely works well as a smoke detector. It was easy to install the base to the wall, as well as inserting the actual smoke detector onto the base. I'm disappointed in this model of smoke detector. My brother is a firefighter and insisted I get a smoke detector for every floor of my home, and said that if I bought one with a sealed battery I would be able to set it and forget it for about 10 years. I begrudgingly spent money that had been gifted to me on these for safety rather than something fun, and I at least felt secure. Until the upstairs unit started firing off at nighttime. This must have happened 5 or 6 times, jolting me from sleep in a panic, before I disabled the unit. My brother said I should use canned air to spray through it in case something was setting it off but that didn't help. Now, less than a year after the purchase of these 3 units, I've got my basement one giving a low battery chirp every 30 seconds or so. This was supposed to last for *years*. So far the only one that hasn't shown some sign of being defective is on the ground floor, so I didn't bottom out all my star ratings but 2 out of 3 is a pretty horrible rate of defects. Update 10 June 2020: I was just woken at 6:15am to the upstairs alarm misfiring just like the first faulty one did. It looks like I'll have to replace this one too. The good news is these units are loud as hell. The bad news is whatever they don't like about my home seems to be a common issue and not a simple bug with only one of the three I originally bought. It's really disconcerting to wake up and rush through your house looking for the source of a fire you expect to end life as you know it only to realize it's just another defective smoke detector. Dropping my review to one star. 3 out of 3 units malfunctioning is a real drag, especially given that the product description brags of how its unique design cuts down on false alarms. I've filled the house with smoke cooking and the device never made a peep, but we get all 85 decibels at random while trying to sleep. ... show more

I've had these smoke detectors in my home for about a year now, and two of them started to malfunction. They started alarming (NOT chirping), in the middle of the night. One of them alarmed a few times and stopped after I took it down. The other alarmed every couple of hours until I took it down. The following night, it started to alarm again, but it was constant. I tried to silence, reset, and clean the detector, nothing would turn it off so I eventually deactivated it before I went insane. I called First Alert's product support to let them know what was happening, and they are sending new units to my house. I am incredibly satisfied with their customer service, but wish I didn't have to deal with the malfunctioning alarms in the first place. ... show more
