The First Alert PC900V Combination Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm provides maximum protection and has a new sleek, slimmer design, which adds an element of style to safety. The PC900V has a modern, thin square design that's less than an inch thick (half the size of a standard alarm), while still providing all the protection you need to keep what matters most safe and secure. The PC900V is unique because it features (2) alarm systems that work independently to detect both evidence of fire and carbon monoxide (CO) through the electrochemical carbon monoxide sensor and patented smoke entry system that allows a direct smoke path to the photoelectric sensor to detect regular and slow, smoldering fires. The combination of the smoke and CO (carbon monoxide) sensor and First Alert's Nuisance Free Technology will reduce false alarms that result from cooking and shower steam. I had a $120 Google Nest Protect previously and it malfunctioned and I believe requires a good wifi connection to really work properly. I wanted something simple and reliable so switched to the this First Protect. So far so good. No false alarms yet and installation was straightforward. They even included drywall anchors, something that was not even included with the Nest Protect. Just drill a 3/16 hole and then lightly hammer the drywall anchors in, then screw the mounting bracket in to the anchors using a phillips screwdriver. You can also rotate the First Alert in it's mounting bracket so that the words line up exactly how you like them. No one likes a smoke detector mounted on the wall with the lettering skewed or upside down. You do not have to screw the unit on the mount all the way in order for it to be secure. The features are simple and to the point, just write down in your smartphone or wherever what the different beeps mean because you will probably forget later on. There are only a few different beep sequences so it's not overly complicated but you will want to know for example when it's telling you the battery needs replacement vs. when it's at the end of it's life cycle. This is an inexpensive, simple and relatively attractive unit, although I really wish smoke detector companies would put more effort in to beautiful designs. Very easy to install. Just install the base first on the ceiling with a couple of screws and then the detector fits right in on the base. When the battery gets low, it gives a warning beeping sound so I know when to change out the battery.
