  • Great wood splitter
Heavy duty! Great quality and gets the job done. Good size and durable. Easy to use.

  • Very well made and highly functional. Carefully consider safety when mounting
Very well constructed. Heavy made. Thick powder coating that holds up well so far. The design with the raised ribs seems to split wood better with less sticking than flat sided wedges.I considered taking away a star really needs to be sharpened, which only took a couple of minutes with an angle grinder. I cook exclusively with wood for both grilling and smoking plus dutch ovens and cast iron kettles-- several times a week and go through over a cord of wood a year cooking. Building good cooking fires quickly is best done with some smaller split wood (typically hickory, pecan, or oak for me). I have used just about every imaginable way to split my cooking wood--a hydraulic splitter is too slow. And compared to wedges, a maul, driving a hatchet through........this is better, easier, safer. Once sharpened, it is easy to split even knotty hickory 18" long without them hanging up on the wedge. I simply mounted it on a short board and sit in on the concrete. I do put it away when not in use because it is sharp now and I don't want anyone falling on it. I sit in a chair and make quick work of all the wood i need for a sessions cooking in a few minutes. I use a 2 lb blacksmith hammer to drive the wood onto the wedge. I will probably eventually mount it a different way, maybe making a stand for it with a guard around the blade and that will catch the wood as it is split. My recommendation to everyone is to make sure that you use and store the wedge safely and consider that mounting it where someone might stumble and fall on it could create a serious injury. Anyone trained in wood safety knows that one places a single bit ax in a log to make it safe, but not a double bitted one. I am taking one star on safety so hopefully people will read my review, purchase the item, but then install and use it in a safe manner. ... show more

  • Solid item--highly recommended!
We have our kids (teens) do a lot of firewood splitting--mainly the logs they bring in for the fireplace. I worry much less about their fingers with this stationary splitting wedge than with them swinging the axe. This is a heavy-duty splitter wedge that looks great and needs to be mounted on a big stump. Only downside to this item is the lack of a "holder"--unlike the other well-known item with the ring around it. But that's not that big of a deal. ... show more

  • Great size and great that you have to sharpen your own edge
Fantastic little wedge! Got this to split kindling, as I have a gas powered log splitter already. This is perfect for that I was wanting to do. It's super durable, being made out of ductile iron. Really heavy. And size is exactly what I was wanting as you can see (8lb chihuahua for scale). Now, it doesn't take a brain surgeon to realize that there's no edge on this wedge. And the sheer number of reviews of people using this with no edge should scare you. Yes, you need to sharpen the edge initially, as stated in the instructions. Personally, I LOVE this as factory edges are never done properly, so I can put the proper edge on it from the beginning. If you know what you are doing, the fact you have to make your own edge should make you happy. Value for your money is fantastic! ... show more

  • Disappointing
I was excited to try this, as we heat our home exclusively with wood, but sadly this item is very disappointing. If you burn actual hardwood firewood, it’s barely usable— that is, if you have a piece that you want to split that already has a crack in it where you can lodge the splitter, it will work, but otherwise it really doesn’t. If you want to split kiln-dried soft wood, it will work for that, however, I wouldn’t recommend burning that in your wood stove. ... show more

  • Great Kindling Splitter With Some Caveats
There is no doubt that this is a solid, iron splitting tool. This splitting tool works best with smaller-sized very dry, straight knot free logs. For reference, consider that since you’ll have to hold the log in one hand and pound on it with a sledge hammer with the other, larger wood is unwieldy with this splitting format where considerable pressure is required to split the log. This splitter definitely works well with dry, knot-free wood. Twisted, gnarly wood hangs up easily and tends to bind around the wedge points. “Green” wood tends to hang up easier as well depending on your maul weight and striking force Note that if you’re splitting wood that tends to hang up, any long longer than the length of the splitter (6”) can hang up too and have to be pulled off the wedge point. I split Alaska spruce and birch. I process this for both firewood and kindling My firewood length is 17 inches, or almost three times the height of the splitter. If the wood I’m using for my wood stove is already split for that and as I’m moving and stacking it I discover those straight, knot free very dry pieces, I toss them aside for processing with this splitter to make kindling. At this task with that wood, this splitter works admirably 99% of the time and is both faster and safer that using an axe. I did a test run and found that despite my already split wood hanging up here and there for an undetected knot or twist, I was able to methodically pop kindling pieces twice as fast than I was able to with an axe or hatchett. Use gloves. I found that the screws provided with the splitter are too short for my needs so I used 3” screws to secure the splitter in a large, rounded log. If you’re using a screw gun to fasten the splitter to something, an extension is handy because depending on the width ofyour gun, the screw holes might be close enough to the wedge points to interfere with screwing them in. This splitter is permanently mounted on my kindling splitting wood around and is my go-to method for turning bigger sticks into little sticks. ... show more
