  • Good Value; Amazon's Android Mod Needs Work
Digital Storage Capacity: 16 GB Offer Type: With Special Offers Color: Black Style: Fire HD 8
÷÷÷TLDR÷÷÷ For the price, you won't find better hardware (even second-hand, it's a tall order). Has an aux jack! Yay! Works seamlessly with Bluetooth devices and all the Micro-USB chargers you probably already own. It's not bleeding-edge, but it's entirely serviceable. Still, a clunky user interface and the most annoying oversight in virtual keyboard design prevent a 10/10 experience. 8/10: have already recommended this to my friends; planning to buy one for my Step-Dad's birthday. ÷÷÷The Long Version÷÷÷ Pros: +Great price (I don't mind Amazon's special offers; once in a while, they even include something useful) +Good screen: crisp, vivid, with a broad range of brightness levels +Has an aux jack! Yessss! Thank you, Amazon, for understanding that just because we *can* go wireless doesn't mean we want it to be the only option. +Ideal form factor for travel, reading in bed, or streaming The Great British Baking Show while you cook. Would be great for writing in bed without waking Boo if not for the glaring oversight in the design of the native virtual keyboard and all the variants available in the Amazon AppStore (see below). +Surprisingly decent speakers--not "like you're there," but better than I expected. Fine for watching videos when you're too lazy to go get your headphones or a speaker. +Sound battery life +Preloaded with apps useful for those of us (big hallo to my fellow Amazon junkies!) who spend a lot of time plying the electronic waters of a certain cyber-river (Kindle, Prime Video, etc) +Plays well with my existing collection of Bluetooth Everything +Works with the 1,593,246 micro-USB cables and chargers that I already have +Fairly good array of accessories (cases, screen protectors) available +Good community support so you can do things like sideload Google Play and possibly get a virtual keyboard that isn't terrible +Even with the pre-installed Amazon apps, less non-removeable bloatware than a lot of devices +Onboard blue filter does a pretty solid job +Support for huge MicroSD storage. Since I've yet to fill a 128-GB card, that's what I put in mine. Neutrals: ÷Silk browser is neither good nor bad. ÷There's a built-in Docs/Drive app, which might be handy if you're not already a dedicated Google Drive/Docs/Sheets/etc user (which I am). ÷Camera is meh, but taking pix with an 8" tablet is awkward anyway. ÷8 GB storage built-in isn't a lot, but the enormous expansion capacity makes up for that, especially if you already bought Boo a 128 GB expansion card that they never use and have no compunctions about stealing it ;) Cons: -The MOST ANNOYING VIRTUAL KEYBOARD. Seriously, who thought it was a good idea to build in a virtual keyboard that can't be scaled for easy one-handed flow-typing in portrait mode on an 8" tablet? Note to developers: "thumb typing mode" is NOT a substitute. Sadly, if it weren't for that glaring oversight, the native virtual keyboard actually would be perfectly fine. Ugh. Worse, you can't even download a virtual keyboard that *does* scale through Amazon's AppStore. I'm hoping side-loading Google Play Store will let me download Gboard and SwiftKey ... but since I've yet to try that, I'm not 100% sure that'll work, either. -No high-speed charging. This doesn't actually bother me (last tablet had a semi-fried battery and could play video for 30 mins before dying, so I'm used to running tethered to the wall-wart), but it could be a deal-breaker for someone else -Amazon's Android mod is clunky. It's not horrible or unusable-just meh. With a little more thought, it could be a lot better. My beloved (if elderly) Galaxy Note Tab 8.0 died a gooey death due to a leaky bottle in a shared travel container, and the Kindle Fire mod just isn't the same. Overall: I'm enjoying my Kindle Fire HD 8. It's a fine device for reading and streaming content, and with the addition of a Bluetooth keyboard (for reasons lost to history, I own three o.o'), it's also good for writing. Hardware performance is fine for casual mobile gaming (fellow match-3 and Two Dots junkies, take note). It's probably not great for high-demand games, but why would you buy a fitty dolla tablet for those? I don't love the Kindle Fire Android mod, but I don't actually hate it, either. It's meh, but I can live with it until I either find a workaround or move on to some other tablet and give my Kindle Fire 8 to the hubster. It lacks the fanciest bellwhistle specific to my previous tablet--the Samsung Note/Wacom collabo screen and S-pen--but at this price point, I wouldn't expect that anyway. That said, being several years newer, the Fire HD 8 does sport crisper graphics overall than my old tablet, which was a very nice surprise. It's also responsive and good at localizing touch. Even with its limitations, the Kindle Fire HD 8 is hard to beat at its bargain price-point. ... show more

  • It's a Kindle. It works.
Digital Storage Capacity: 16 GB Offer Type: With Special Offers Color: Marine Blue Style: Fire HD 8
First, I'm not really techie. I use this primarily for traveling and a study group. It does everything I need it to do in a format larger than my phone (eg. email, books, web search, games) as well as reading and creating documents. When in a group meeting, it's easier for me to split activities than maintaining everything on a single screen (eg. the App, internet search, books, make or read docs). And, it's a spare for photos. I don't use it a lot but I really appreciate it when I do. ... show more

I bought this for my daughter she loves it. As long as she can watch YouTube and play games she is good. And she still has it and play with it. No issues!!

  • Best Choice Fire Tablet for Quality, Size and Price
Digital Storage Capacity: 16 GB Offer Type: With Special Offers Color: Black Style: Fire HD 8
This review is for those stuck between purchasing a Fire 7 or a Fire HD 8 Tablet: Let me just get this off my chest first. I DO NOT RECOMMEND a Fire 7 AT ALL if your looking for a quality tablet that’s small and inexpensive like I was. The only reasons I can see anyone buying a Fire 7 is if it’s for a very, very young child as a starter tablet or if your an adult who will only use it to read books. Otherwise the Fire HD 8 is going to be your best bet. The Fire HD 8 is great quality for it’s size and yes even it’s price. It’s the perfect size unlike the Fire 7 which to me really isn’t much larger in screen size than my iPhone 6+. The Fire HD 8 comes with an ample amount of storage to be able to handle whatever updates it throws at you upon setup, and that’s just the 16GB. Anything below 16GB is not enough to handle device updates and allow for storage space for much of anything. There’s not much money saved either in buying a Fire 7 8GB with a micro SD Card, been there, done that and I won’t do it again! Now onto the fun stuff. The Fire HD 8 is HD! It has a longer battery life, downloads faster, has better sound quality and video quality than the Fire 7. It’s also easier to start up a game and actually play it than the Fire 7. Everything that is possible to do with a Fire HD 8 Tablet is much more fun and less time consuming than a Fire 7. I highly recommend the Fire HD 8 Tablet if aside from reading, gaming and watching videos is also as important. The only problem I have encountered with both Fire Tablets is their very finicky Location Services. I would have given the Fire HD 8 Five Stars if the Location Services worked better and therefore enabled me to restore from a backup. I will always have to setup as a new device every time I upgrade a device because it takes this brand tablet almost 24 hours to find my location if it even ever does?! With all of that being said I highly recommend the Fire HD 8 Tablet. Although it’s no iPad by any means. At times I find myself forgetting what device I’m on and that speaks volumes! If you’re like me and enjoy utilizing everything a device has to offer, this one is the only way to go for it’s compact size, the quality and the price! ... show more
