  • Excellent value, plays great right out of the box
Color: 2-Color Sunburst (Matte)
My particular guitar did not have any sharp fret ends and the fret tops looked to be polished, or at the very least did not feel rough at all. It was very playable right out of the box. Action was 1.5mm on low E at the 12th fret and even lower on the high E with no buzzing on any fret when played without a heavy hand. Intonation was spot on, on all but one string which wasn't off by much. The bridge was decked when I got it, floating it was the only change I needed to make. Truss rod did not need to be adjusted at all, there was a very slight bit of relief in the neck already. I didn't check the gap between string and first fret or closely examine the nut but there was no indication that the nut was causing any problems. The back of the neck, as YT reviewers have noted is pretty rough feeling. The satin finish looks and feels great and doesn't show finger grease like a glossy finish would. It weighed in at just under 7 pounds. Guitar seems to hold tune when lightly using the tremolo but the tuners are the real weak point of the guitar. They do work, and the guitar stays in tune, but the tuners are not very smooth feeling at all. Sometimes they'll feel very difficult to turn but then loosen up, sometimes it feels like the knob turns without doing much before having an effect. Sometime a slight twist of the knob makes too much of a change, so it is a bit difficult to make minor adjustments. They're not good but they are serviceable. They are the first thing I'd consider replacing. The tremolo block is also very thin so that's something else to consider swapping. I didn't play it a whole lot through an amp yet but initial impression is that it sounds decent. Bridge pickup seems a little shrill but dialing back the tone control makes it acceptable. For the beginner that this guitar is aimed at, I don't think you'd need to change anything right away. It is perfectly playable out of the box, all a new player needs to do is tune it up and start playing. That's the way it was with my guitar but of course this could vary. However, since some reviewers had the same experience it's clear Fender must be making some effort to setup the guitars before shipping them. The initial out of the box experience, in my opinion, is better than any Indio or Firefly I've had and better than or equal to most IYV or Harley Bentons that I got. Considering you get a very competitively priced guitar, from a major brand, that may not need any work at all (unlike most budget instruments) and the free 3 months of Fender Play I think this is a real winner for a beginning guitarist. I have no problem recommending it to any beginner or even experienced guitarist. ... show more

  • Great deal!
Color: 2-Color Sunburst (Matte)
has a fat neck! something to consider before buying if you prefer thin necks, it has a nice rounded, smooth body, good, balanced weight. yours may need a set up, mine was spot on with intonation right out of the box, the action is fine, tuners are solid, strings are fine,. i tuned it up and jammed for over an hour. This guitar is the perfect choice for a beginner, price and quality wise, as well as pawn shop re-sale value due to being a trusted name brand! ... show more

  • Not quite as garbage as I was expecting lol.
Color: Black (Matte)
Not really garbage at all, honestly. Did Fender actually fix the QC issues? Budget brands be in trouble. Pros: -truss rod works, but relief was fine out of the box. -set up is fine, surprisingly. -tuners aren’t missing gears (but the strings will need some stretching). -nut cut well. -action is surprisingly good. -no sharp fret edges. -nice satin feel to the neck/fingerboard. -fingerboard ain’t fuggles mcgursky (really nice piece of Indian laurel). -selector switch and knobs feel tight/all work fine. -jack works, but is a little wobbly. Cheap fix if you need to. -strap buttons not stripped. -matte finished body is quite nice if not finished super perfect; I unfortunately was optioned the dust color (aka black) when I would’ve preferred the red/sunburst. So far though, no dust, possibly because it's matte and not gloss. -no neck pocket finish cracks. -neck is thicker than expected, but not a baseball bat. -no neck dive. -classy headstock (unlike other budget brands). Cons: -not a lightweight body. I’m wondering if this is even poplar, as every poplar body I’ve had my hands on has been featherweight. But it’s not heavy like a LP or anything like that. Normal strat body weight. -the trem works but is tight. So tight you might break it forcing it. Not an easy fix for a beginner, but fixable and can be blocked off (kinda blocked off as it is). -trem block is the thin cheapo kind. -some slight buzzing/weird notes, but that could be these awful strings/the guitar settling in. -no gig bag or accessories other than the hex wrenches/trem bar. Adorkable: -the tone control for the middle pickup doesn’t work. Because some genius soldered the tone control to the bridge pickup. Which I’ve seen suggested as mods by players who hate/want to control the ice pick-iness of the bridge pickup. Kinda doubting if yours will be like this lol, but one never knows, do one? Conclusion: This blows away the two Squier contemporary models I tried (too many QC issues for the $$$). Probably one of the nicer budget guitars I’ve tried. I would give this to an absolute beginner no problem (most of the weird buzzing/notes were coming from more advanced playing; little Joey won’t be playing Arpeggios from Hell, for example). At least they won’t be laughed off the face of the planet like they might with another budget brand’s name/headstock shape. :P You could buy this just for the neck (no knots, good grain, good shape, room on the frets for a wider string spacing nut, typical Fender long scale/radius). Squier logo is a plain outline, build year is ‘24. Made in China. ... show more

  • Intonation was spot on out of the box
Color: Black (Matte)
The squire debut Stratocaster is a real bargain at $119 Mine came today well packaged. Checked intonation with stroboscoptic tuner after stretching strings and tuning up, all were about a half note flat out of box. Intonation and 2nd harmonics are all correct, all fret ends in are smooth and action is set fairly low. This is best set up I’ve seen in new guitar in the sub $1000 price range. Matte black finish seems perfect, no grit or uneven spots. Neck has nice satin finish. I plan to replace tuners and install an alnico V Pickups soon. For $119 this can’t be beat. Amazing setup and fretwork at this price. Also the installed strings seem to be of good quality, they didn’t leave any smudge marks like most cheap strings. ... show more

  • Fender's Addresses The Sub $120 Guitar Market!
Color: Dakota Red (Matte)
This guitar is every bit as good, if not better, than the pricier Bullet/Sonic series. No skunk stripe on neck. Frets ends are not sharp. Nice string height out of the box. Very good budget tuners. Beautiful matte finish-LOVE the dakota red! Pickups are cheap ceramics which sound fine. If Squier would ship these with a cheap gig bag- it would be perfect! Love it- no complaints. ... show more
