Lots of reviews here already cover the DeVille's great tones. I just wanted to add my opinion on why you might want to choose this over the classic Twin Reverb, given they both have the same 2x6L6 power section and run at more or less the same volume -- both potentially very loud. The DeVille is rated at 60 watts and the Twin at 85 watts (due to a larger output transformer, which is why the amp weighs more than a Deville, ie 85 lbs vs 69 lbs) but the audible volume difference in 15 watts is negligible. The biggest reason the DeVille is more usable, in most gig situations, is the presence of a master volume, which allows a player to adjust the gain for more natural amp overdrive/grit without cranking the amp wide-open. There's no way to adjust a Twin for say, mild to medium OD without adding a pedal of some kind. Even turned up to max volume, the Twin hardly breaks up at all (good for surf guitar, but not much else). With the DeVille you can set your basic tone for mild to medium OD, then use pedals to add more gain as needed. The DeVille also has a Presence control, a feature borrowed from the Marshall amp line which allows attenuation of extra-high frequencies. This means you can tweak the amp tone a bit more than you can with a Twin. Together with the bass, middle, and treble controls, It's like having a 4-band equalizer. Lastly the two 12" speakers are installed on a diagonal axis in the DeVille, rather than side by side as in the Twin. This makes a difference in hearing yourself onstage as the uppermost speaker is a bit closer to your ears. The arrangement probably also disperses your guitar sound better in the room/in front of the stage, although if you're mic-ing the amp it won't make much difference. I've owned both the Twin and the DeVille and for the reasons mentioned above, I find the DeVille a lot more usable. It's arguably the best amp Fender currently produces, other than the more expensive Michael Landau edition of the same amp, which might be even better but which I've never tried. At roughly $1,000, the DeVille is also about $400 cheaper than the Twin. Leaves plenty of room in the budget for pedals or speaker/tube upgrades. ... show more
