Description

Nicholas Cox is determined to prove himself in the world of competitive fencing, and earn his place alongside fencing legends like the dad he never knew, but things get more complicated when he’s up against his golden-boy half-brother, as well as sullen fencing prodigy, Seiji Katayama. Nicholas, the illegitimate son of a retired fencing champion, is a scrappy fencing wunderkind, and dreams of getting the chance and the training to actually compete. After getting accepted to the prodigious Kings Row private school, Nicholas is thrust into a cut-throat world, and finds himself facing not only his golden-boy half-brother, but the unbeatable, mysterious Seiji Katayama... Through clashes, rivalries, and romance between teammates, Nicholas and the boys of Kings Row will discover there’s much more to fencing than just foils and lunges. From acclaimed writer C.S. Pacat (The Captive Prince) and fan- favorite artist Johanna the Mad. Read more

  • A Fun Fencing Comic
This graphic novel reminds me of Yuri on Ice in all the right ways. I've heard so much praise for Pacat's The Captive Prince, but I haven't read it. When I saw she wrote a fencing comic with queer characters, I was all in! I'm not a big sports buff so I really enjoyed the explanations into the world of fencing. There's not too much to bog you down, but definitely enough to get you invested and excited for each match. I haven't read an extensive amount of manga, but I can see the sports manga/anime tropes being used. They're done in a fresh way. I love how casually queer this comic is. Sexuality is very nonchalant. I've excited for the slow burn rivals to lovers scenario to go down! This is only the first volume, so I can just see a glimpse of potential so far. I give this graphic novel a 5/5. It's a fun fencing comic with interesting characters. I've already pre-ordered the second volume. ... show more

  • I had a fun time reading this book!
It's always a hit-or-miss when it comes to reading graphic novels for me. The last one I read, I swore graphic novels were not for me. Now that I've read Fence, I'm in love with graphic novels again. Maybe certain GN are not for me? Fence follows our main character Nicholas, a boy who wants nothing more than to fence. Nicholas is the illegitimate son of a retired fencing champion and he wishes to be as good as him. Nicholas gets defeated in his first match against Seiji. He doesn't let that loss change his mind about going to school for fencing. Nicholas and Seiji happen to be roommates in their new school. Neither one of them like this arrangement. They try to get it changed. Unfortunately, their wish is not granted. I had a fun time reading this book. I really like all the characters and fencing. I'm not gonna lie, I though fencing was stupid before I read this. I'm really excited to see where this series is going to end up going. I'm also sensing a romance between Nicholas and Seiji.... We'll see! 4/5 stars ... show more

  • Clifhanger
I overall loved the book. I had recently read a book including fencing and was interested to find more like it so this really helped my search. But there's only one thing I didn't like...the clifhanger at the end. I now have to wait to buy the next volume of this series before I can find out what happens. ... show more

  • a page turner
I'm already in love with this series; it's sooo good. Why did I wait this long to read it? I have no idea, but it's totally worth it❤️I've already got all of them.

  • Captivating start to the series...
I was excited to start this new comic series, and Volume One of Fence did not disappoint. I enjoyed the introduction to these characters and this world, and am eagerly awaiting the next installment. I'm intrigued by these characters and excited to see where these relationships will go in future issues. The simmering dynamic between Nicholas and Seiji is giving me life, and I feel like there's definitely something there between Harvard and Aiden. I'll be interested to see if my suspicions prove true. And Bobby? More Bobby, please! The art and character design are fantastic and do a great job of giving life to this story. Can't wait for more from the boys of Kings Row! ... show more

  • Way better than I thought it would be!
I’m hooked so far! I love the characters and can’t wait to find out who makes the team! Nice putting Senji and Nick in the same room lol

  • Fun, Diverse, Something Different
4.5 Stars A fun read. I didn't realize this was Volumes 1-4, so I'm glad I only bought this one and not any of the others, or I would have had duplicates that I couldn't do anything with. The story is fun. The cast is very diverse. The characters' queerness isn't an issue and isn't even discussed. It's just a part of the characters, like their eye color or their height. I hope to be able to put this in my classroom library, but I'll have to keep reading to see if the sport continues to be the highlight or if romance takes over. I hope that fencing remains the focus. ... show more

  • Hooked!
I’ve never read a graphic novel surrounding fencing and this first volume featuring Johanna The Mad’s fantastic artwork has me really intrigued to see where the series is going. C.S. Pacat of course doesn’t disappoint on with the story either, and if we’re going by her other work this will no doubt be a fantastic slow burn. ... show more
