  • Great size for the ladies
I have 7 Penn 2-speed reels for fishing ranging from these 40s up to an 80W. I made 2 custom rods for the gals and paired these reels with them. I really like the narrow frame. It is less bulky and easier to handle with smaller hands. The lower gear, which is closer to 1/3 the retrieval speed versus 1/2 the retrieval speed on my other Penns reels gives enough torque to help the smaller fisher folks get the big ones off the bottom and away from the wrecks. ... show more

  • Great reel from Penn Great reel from Penn
My first time using and owning a 2 speed reel. I was able to crank up a 54.5# Atlantic halibut on jefferies in august 2025 in the gulf of maine with ease.

  • Handle updated… not the same as the picture
Haven’t used it yet, but be aware that the handle has changed. Handle bar is solid and straight and the handle itself is not the large grip. Assuming these were changes because of issues with the old handle bending. Solid handle bar is good, but wish it was still angled and wish it had the large grip. ... show more

  • A good reel but it needs a trip to Cal's to make it freespool properly
I purchased two of these reels a little over a year ago to go with my original first generation 2-speed Phantom 40N. First thing I did was to ditch the puny t-bar handle knob and install the knob off the first generation reel which to me and my daughter feels better in the hand. Neither reel saw much use last year. BTW I do like the larger t-handle found on the Internationals. Fast forward to this year and I finally had the opportunity to put these reels into serious action on an 8 day trip at "The Ridge" where I discovered neither reel would free spool very well with anything over 14lbs of drag. Not good when using 60# mono which is well within the design parameters of this reel. I was able to make the reels work with 60# mono albeit helping the reel to freespool with a flyline bait. Besides the freespool issue the reels handled the 50-80lb yellowfin with ease. Which left me somewhat, but not entirely, pleased with how they worked. Upon talking with another passenger who has the same reel. He too advised he had freespool issues with his second generation Fathom 40N 2 speed and sent it to Cal's to be blueprinted. This is where my reels are currently located, waiting to be blueprinted. Penn are you listening... your first gen Fathoms were great but your so called improved model needs improvement. It shouldn't have to be sent in for blueprinting because it won't free spool with anything over 14lbs of drag. ... show more

  • get the older model.
this is what happens when they don't actually test their product in the real world. The weak handle design and the silver paint was a horrible idea.. yes it looks better but it starts chipping off after the first use and by the end of the season...horrible. I have and use penn reels from 20 years ago and I doubt these new fathoms will last me a couple of seasons. bummed because I try and stick with Penn but doesn't look like I can anymore. ... show more
