I like the variety of colors, and the mini size of the pastels did not bother me because I really wanted a sampler box. So for me, this set works. But be aware of the size; see my photo that shows the box with a quarter on top of the pastel sticks in the top left corner for scale. The issue I had immediately was when I swatched out a deep blue on gray-toned paper, and the pastel wouldn't blend out. See bottom right corner of swatch paper photos. I then chipped off some blue dust from the same pastel, sprinkled it on the paper, and then blended. This worked fine and blended out well. See top right on paper in photos. I haven't swatched all colors yet, but I suspect others will cause me the same concern.

I just got these and I am wondering if this box was an old box sitting somewhere damp and dirty. The box was dirty inside the plastic wrap and the pastel sticks were messy, meaning there are many other colors on top of each pastel sticks. I am not sure if I am going to keep this box since it is much likely that it's old or it's been sitting somewhere that was dirty and damp.

In looking for a wide variety of colors, I chose this set of Faber Castell Gold Faber Studio Box of 48 because of its range and value for the price. As a semi-professional artist, my venture into soft pastels began with another brand. Faber Castell offers many in-between shades that I didn't have in my collection. I like to try many colors and hues because in art I love having options available to me! A set of smaller sticks lets me sample and use a color for a project and then decide if I like it enough to continue using the particular color. For instance, there is an olive/cement color that was a perfect complement to my other colors--not too olive, nor too gray, it just fit my requirements. The quality of this set was satisfactory for me and the sticks weren't crumbly like some others. I use this product in combination with another product I reviewed, "Acrylic Ground for Pastels" (see my review on this product, too).

I missed the "mini" on the packaging in the images so I was disappointed when they arrived so small. It is a bit deceptive that the seller does not include "mini" in the Product Title or Description. But I will consider this a lesson learned and be sure I more thoroughly review the images since there are deceptive sellers on Amazon who do not clearly indicate the size of the product they are selling. Oh well. As far as the product itself, aside from the size, it is as expected - a mid-grade soft pastel. The colors are not highly pigmented but still works better than other soft pastels I've used before, and certainly better than the cheap eyeshadow I've played with once or twice =)

I was thinking these were more along the line of half-sticks but they actually are mini, really. Other than that, I've only scribbled on a page with them so far, but the colors are vibrant and beautiful. I was really checking for that coating another reviewer described and there are clearly soft pastels--they go on smooth. One did break the minute I put it to the page, but I look at this as me testing the product prior to ordering a larger set and let's face it, I'm gonna break more before the week is out. I've attached pics of the scribbles, but also comparison pics of a regular chalk pastel, a half-stick and one of these.

I love the colors, the pigmentation is strong and vibrant, nonetheless these are really small, they are smaller than half stick, so you consider before buying it. They're cute tho, I think this is like a tester set. I don't use them as much so the size is not a problem for me, and I enjoy having a wide range of colours and shades.
