The design acts like a self leading screw. You don't have to push down to get it started. Roots might present a problem but, that's not a fault of the tool. When it bottoms out, pull straight up. The remaining plug will break up when shaken out. Would definitely recommend.

It’s a really great tool. I used it for digging holes and tilling the soil with Bermuda grass invading. Helpful with the roots. Directions were easy to follow and Installment was easy less than 10 minutes! Although it won’t be screwed in tight enough so I used this method of tightening.
