  • 4½ Stars if I Could: Awesome for Home/Hobby Use; A Bit Quirky for Professional Use
The media could not be loaded. This is a super-handy tool for home and hobby use. I can already think of many past projects for which I wish I had had this digital microscope. Bright light and magnifying glasses work only so well when you need to really zoom in on some detail, whether you’re trying to discern a worn mint mark on an old coin, or trying to repair a tiny loose wire on an electrical component, etc. For home use, I love this tool and give it 5 stars. It would also make a great gift for a young budding scientist in your family who will love investigating his or her world at a whole new level of detail (and the fact that it takes videos and still images will be right up their alley – ya know: gotta post and share everything!). For “professional purposes” – I guess 4 stars (and maybe that’s even a bit generous). My biggest issue with this microscope is that no matter how tightly you secure all the parts, it lacks stability. The microscope arm will jiggle about even when just trying to bring the image into focus and most definitely when pressing any buttons (such as to zoom in) which are mounted right on the top screen. Especially if you want to record a video, you need to have everything set up (positioning, lighting, focus) before you even begin recording, or you’ll just have a shaky video every time you touch the microscope to adjust any function, readjust focus, or move the object about. Basically, you can achieve a “clean” video only if the object you’re viewing is doing all the moving (e.g., a slide of bacteria). But if you have to move the object around or change zoom or focus, etc., the video will be shaky and amateurish – not something you’ll want to share at your next scientific conference. But for home/hobby use, I think this is an awesome tool. Watch the video for a quick demo of the microscope in action. First, I show the set-up menu (language, time/date, etc.), then the image menu (for viewing and deleting videos and stills). Second, I place a $1 coin under the lens and show you how the microscope works: focus, lighting/brightness, and zoom. But also notice how the screen and image jiggle about as I’m pressing buttons and adjusting focus. One other issue: I’m not sure how accurate the zoom levels are. For example, there seems to be hardly any change in zoom level when adjusting between 16x and 32x in the video. But, again, for home/hobby use, this microscope provides more than ample magnification. There are two methods of lighting available: a down light that surrounds the lens and two separate side spot lights that you can easily point in any direction. Both light sources have brightness control. But the side spot lights require a separate power source (via a USB cord). The down light operates with the microscope and screen, so it will fully function if the battery is charged (or via a separate USB cord). In other words, if using the microscope in battery-only mode, you cannot use the side spot lights. Two USB cables are provided (but you will need to provide the power/charging source or your own USB Type-A AC adapters). There are two metal prongs mounted to the base which can hold a glass slide or other thin object in place. They can also be swung out of the way as needed. And a 32GB microSD card is included for recording videos and stills that you can then transfer to your computer. In the settings menu, you can choose from two different video image quality/resolution levels and four still image quality/resolution levels. The one thing missing: a storage box. Unless you want to disassemble and reassemble the microscope with every use, you’ll need to find your own nice box for safe storage in its assembled mode. ... show more
