Description

In this book Paul Sellers has put together the essential information about the tools that he considers to be essential to hand tool woodworking. He describes the tools in use, what to look for when picking them, how to sharpen them as well as tips and tricks for using them. Paul has been woodworking for over 50 years and his admiration and affection for these tools shines through in the pages of the book. The book does not cover building any projects which allows it to focus entirely on the tools. However, you cannot build great furniture without sharp, well-maintained tools. This is what this book covers so well. Read more

  • Comprehensive, well-written and superbly illustrated
Format: Hardcover
My husband, an advanced woodworker really loves this book. Although it is expensive, it is well worth it because it is done so well. It is a wonderful reference guide.

  • A treasure trove of information and experience wrapped in a simply stunning book production.
Format: Hardcover
I cannot recommend this book enough. Yes it's expensive but it's not just the wealth of information but the way that information is conveyed to you in Mr. Sellers singular style that makes you go " yeah I get it, I can see that, I can do that" that makes this book extraordinary. This book is huge and every single page can teach you something, even how to make the famous rag in a can oiler. A few words about the production quality. The paper is some of the finest printing paper I've encountered from the weight to the feel in hand it's simply outstanding. The photography and subsequent print quality is stunning. The font is easy to read and I found not a single flaw in the entire book. Mr. Sellers personal sketches used to convey some detail he's trying to show you are just one of my favorite parts of the book. ( they also disclose just how good of an artist he is ) For far less than the cost of a single good chisel I've advanced my understanding of woodworking and woodworking tools exponentially. ... show more

  • This is the definitive book on hand tools
Format: Hardcover
This is the definitive book on hand tools. It has both breadth and depth. It covers the acquisition, care and use of virtually every hand tool. As a result it is a very large book but Paul really takes the time to describe in great detail how to sharpen and use every hand tool. The book is also exceedingly well written and illustrated. The only criticism I have is that occasionally, there is a little bit of repetition. I know this book is expensive but it is worth every penny. You are getting a craftsman's lifetime of learning in a clear presentation. Spend the money, you won't regret it. ... show more

  • Wonderfully illustrated collection of woodworking techniques
Format: Hardcover
Paul Sellers is a highly experienced cabinet maker who uses mostly hand tools to ply his trade. His articles and blogs are articulate, informative and easy to understand. The material in this book is no exception. Paul has put together a collection of woodworking techniques, illustrated by clear pictures and complimented by descriptions and maintenance of the tools used to perform each operation. Great Book! If I had a criticism, it would be that the type is slightly small, probably because the book has so much material that the size of the book would be prohibitive if the type were larger. ... show more

  • A 6 star book for a five star price!
Format: Hardcover
I have enjoyed paul sellers DVDs and other fine books for years. This one deserves 6 stars for the amount of informations presented and even more so for how he explains it all in a clear and concise manner. Paul doesn't waste your time trying to sell you a particular brand, only explains what he has used for decades and why it meets his needs to do the job. The section on saw sharpening and Molding planes is worth the price of the book alone! I cannot recommend this book highly enough for both the folks just gets geting interested in the craft and those who appreciate another craftsman's experience! This book will be a classic along with Schwarz, Dunbar, Haywood, Jones, Roubo, and others! ... show more

I just recently discovered Paul on you tube. As far as I am concerned he is the best at explaining what he is doing. The book is even better if that is possible, The book is huge and really covers everything. I have earned a living with my hands all my life, I am now 80 years old.
