  • Very flexible, higher-end LED controller at a good price
One of the things I've learned over the years is that creative lighting projects tend to be more complicated than I expect. Once I dive into a particular project, additional ideas emerge as I move into execution. As a result, when I start, I tend to be fine buying something that may at first feel like overkill, but which gives me a lot of additional flexibility for only a little additional money. This is one of those items. To be clear, you will likely need to do a bit of homework and setup to get this to work just like you want. This isn't one of those open-the-box, connect to some power, find it on your free Native+ or WLED app, attach two wires to the LED strip, and you are good to go controllers. For a unit like this, where you can control individual LEDs, you'll need to customize your settings for your specific LED strip, then set up the scene in your app as you want. Not a big deal, but it can feel a bit daunting the first time you do it. In general, I really like that it provides a huge amount of flexibility and functionality, given that it: 1. is based on an ESP32 chip. This gives you a lot of flexibility in helping turn your vision into reality. 2. has both Bluetooth and Ethernet connectivity. This helps both in setup (where I prefer Ethernet) and in operation (where I prefer Bluetooth). 3. is fused. Shorts and surges happen — not often, but if one does occur, it is nice to replace a simple fuse rather than the entire unit. 4. can support voltages between 5V and 24V. This gives a lot of flexibility in matching this to the LEDs you have. Note, your input voltage needs to match your LED strip voltage. 5. has four channels—great flexibility for larger setups. 6. can support up to 30amps of draw. Note that the maximum for each channel is 7.5amps, so plan accordingly. 7. It has a plastic cover and a DIN rail base, which makes it both easy to mount and more protected from damage than some other units I've seen. Note, though, that this will not keep out dust, so plan accordingly. 8. has a better-than-average user manual available for download. Some things I wish were a bit better: 1. The instructions included in the box are sparse, which isn't uncommon, but the more useful manual seems to be only intermittently available from a Chinese website. I had to make several attempts before the QR code-linked URL actually redirected to the correct landing page. 2. You'll need to update the code. The already-installed code is marked as <v1>, which suggests it is beta rather than production code. Not a big deal, but I'm not sure why it isn't at least marked as V1. Net, especially for the price, this is definitely a five-star product. ... show more

  • Great WLED controller at fair price
Overall this is a really nice WLED controller at a very fair price. Things I like: -The clear plastic cover makes it easy to keep an eye on the internals and to see if a fuse might be blown. It has ventilation slots to allow good airflow. The cover is very well labeled in clear white text that shows all the information you should need to make your connections and even has instructions for how the two buttons work, as well as a QR code for full instructions (but more on that later). The circuit board itself is also labeled in case you're making connections without the cover on. - The screw type phoenix connectors are tried and true. Lever locks might be a nice touch but I personally don't mind these and actually like them because the screw heads give you an easy place to test voltage after connections are made. - Love that it has ethernet for rock-solid low latency connection and also WiFi in case you don't have a wire nearby. Makes it very versatile. - The included paper user manual is very good and has all the information you need to make the connections and get up and running. - They provide URL for official firmware Github repo. I am glad that it's a legitimate source rather than having to download from a China-hosted shortened/obfuscated URL. However see cons section for related issue. - The circuit board appears to be very well made. I inspected the bottom and all solder joints look good. - I was able to connect via WiFi for initial test with no problems. App is very responsive unlike other reviewer that had problems. Things I don't like: - Comes with a red plastic thing that isn't mentioned anywhere in the product listing or user manual and it is not obvious what it's for. After a bit of head scratching I figured out that it snaps into the white plastic back plate and would be used to lock/unlock the chassis when mounting to a 32MM DIN rail. - The user manual QR code goes to a China-hosted short-link service, which raises security/privacy concerns for me. Please mirror the user manual on the project’s GitHub (alongside the firmware) or another reputable hosting platform. The Github firmware repo only has v0.15.1 (which is what the unit came with), but the WLED app shows an update available to v0.15.3. It's not clear whether this WLED-app OTA update is actually compatible or might brick the unit. The user manual does state to only use firmware from the Github repo, but I really think they need to be working with WLED devs to ensure the app is only presenting compatible firmware updates. In the meantime until that is in place they need to do a better job of warning users to not update firmware via the WLED app auto-detect version. If I wasn't already familiar with this issue from another similar product I've used, I would have updated and had to deal with the consequences of that. ... show more
