These are too small to fit existing honey gates. Be careful on replacing existing ones on buckets. These would be good on newly drilled holes to their specific size.

I have a more expensive honey gate ($16 for a single gate from Dadant) which I am comparing to. These gates are much less expensive ($9 for 2 gates as of this review) but you get what you pay for. As far as I can tell, the gate, while solid nylon and quite sturdy, flexes more than the Dadant gate, so when you fill you do not get a clean shut-off of the flow, and the result is that there is a LOT more drippage and cleanup of the gate after you are done. That said, I suppose the price was worth it if this is a hobby.

The nut on the back of the screw on the left hand side of this honey-gate probably needs to be a locking nut (or something) as it loosens up each time you open the honey gate. In order to mitigate this issue, we kept a screwdriver handy while we were filling honey jars. Every 2-3 jars, we had to tighten that screw back up so that when we closed the honey gate, the seal was in place. As it loosens up, the seal no longer works and honey will leak out if you don't keep that screw tightened up. It's not the end of the world. Using the screwdriver every couple of jars worked. But certainly would be nice for it to just work properly without having to fix it every couple of uses.

As others have said, the left bolt loosens up rather quickly. I kept a tiny wrench and screwdriver handy to tighten it back up after I poured some honey, but will probably be looking into a locking nut next time I'm in the hardware store. The wing nut on the right side also kind of chews into the place where it sits. Minor annoyances.
