Bought this because it seemed to contain everything I thought I’d need to learn how to solder and improve the connections on an LED light strip I have for under cabinet lighting. I spent 2 hours or so testing and practicing and could NEVER get the melted solder to adhere properly to the connections on the LED strip. I eventually got frustrated and gave up. The next day I watched a YouTube video that said how important the quality of the solder is for making it work properly, so thought I’d give it another shot with some solder I bought at Home Depot. Sure enough, perfect connections this time. For anyone buying this kit, throw away the solder. There’s also a bunch of other “extras” in the kit that you’ll probably never use. I purchased this set as a gift for someone interested in learning how to solder. I love that this kit has nearly everything they would need to begin practicing soldering. The only other thing that I needed to buy was a silicone mat, as you need a heat resistant/nonflammable surface when using heat tools. I chose this set primarily because it was so complete. It has the soldering tool, the tool stand, various tip sizes, the material to solder, and even the sponge to clean the tips off with. It also comes with an array of tools and materials that will make projects easier to complete. The soldering tool itself seems amazing, as it has a digital readout to see the current temperature. This means you won't be waiting for the tool to heat up longer than necessary. You will also know the exact temperature, so you can be sure you're not using too much heat on sensitive electronic pieces. I struggled to find many digital readout options for the soldering tool, so this feature sold me on this specific set. Lastly, it comes with a handy carrying case. This case is awesome, as it has internal loops to keep things in place and organized within the case. The case is very sturdy and durable, so you can bring it with you to repair on the go, or keep everything in one place to find your tools easily to use around the house. Most of this kit works great, although the solder it comes with (if you get a version that comes with a spool at least) is garbage; it doesn't even specify the solder composition on the label, which should be a red flag if you're not new to soldering (but this kit is marketed at newbies who don't know better). It needs almost the highest temperature setting on this iron just to melt slowly. Ended up ruining 2 of the included tips from high-temp accelerated oxidation before I got 60/40 leaded solder and am now using the iron 150°C (3 settings) cooler. My remaining tips thank me. On the subject of temperature control, wait a few seconds after it hits temperature or the actual tip will still be cool. Only the heating cartridge is actually up to temperature when it first hits temp. And it would be nice if the display used Celcius, which is industry standard and in even multiples of 50°, instead of the Fahrenheit units the display actually shows which are completely random numbers. Also, the coiled receptacle type iron holder is a bit flawed because the tip can easily end up directly contacting the holder and wasting a lot of heat if left on. ... show more
