Description

What would today's rock and pop music be without electric lead and bass guitars? These instruments have been setting the tone for more than sixty years. Their underlying sound is determined largely by their electrical components. But, how do they actually work? Almost no one is able to explain this to the true musician with no technical background. This book answers many questions simply, in an easily-understandable manner. For the interested musician (and others), this book unveils, in a simple and well-grounded way, what have, until now, been regarded as manufacturer secrets. The examination explores deep within the guitar, including pickups and electrical environment, so that guitar electronics are no longer considered highly secret. With a few deft interventions, many instruments can be rendered more versatile and made to sound a lot better – in the most cost-effective manner. The author is an experienced electronics professional and active musician. He has thoroughly tested everything described here, in practice. Read more

  • Written by a German physicist
I can hardly explain how eye-opening this book was when I purchased it back in 2015, it covers aspects of guitar electronics I haven't seen anywhere else particularly with respect to understanding pickup resonance and impedance curves. So yes, I was kinda panicking when I went to look for it just now and couldn't find it on my bookshelf, and the former $44.99 book is out of print and currently only available from a used reseller for almost 20 times that! Jeezus H. Christ. Thankfully I found it in e-book form overseas for €24.95. ... show more

  • Excellent book!
Very thorough. All I wanted to understand is discussed and clarified here. I loved the author’s critique of the marketing ploys of producers! Highly recommended.

  • A must-read book for any guitarist interested in modifying their electronics.
Great book covering a lot of things other books do not. My number 1 guitar electronics design book. Read the online paper that Helmuth released. It is essentially a section taken from the book, and is what prompted me to purchase the book.

  • Great book if you are a beginner in the ins ans outs of guitar tone
An interesting read, for sure - Helmuth Lemme knows how to write a book! As the author states in the forward to this book, it is directed towards guitar players with basic to no knowledge of guitar mechanics, guitar electronics, and guitar history. The interested player could definitely learn from this book. Thanks! ... show more

  • Very disappointed with this book which I was led to believe was the Guitar Wiring Bible.
I reviewed this already but it disappeared... maybe because I canned it somewhat. This has a lot of information but I had trouble finding any sound "secrets" ! Yet again another black and white book that should be in colour and have high quality diagrams and photos which it doesn't. An absolute sin for a tech book that uses colour references to describe how to do certain types of wiring. The diagrams are minuscule thus pretty useless. Photos are grungy. I was very disappointed with this book which I was led to believe was the Guitar Wiring Bible. I bought it on the strength of raves by others which clearly indicated they know more than the author... or nothing at all! HOWEVER, there is some very good content so I gave it 3 stars for that. This could have been such a great book if the author and editor had put themselves in the user/readers shoes. ... show more

  • A bit of electronics knowledge is useful for guitarists!
If you're not afraid of learning a few basic electronics concepts, Lemme's book is just the thing to help you understand the interaction of pickups, controls, cables, effects, and amplifiers. I finally understand the effect that Jimi Hendrix's long curly instrument cable had on his sound!

  • Good sound, from strings to amp
Good history books tell you not only what happened and when, but fundamentally why. And good science books tell you not only what happens, but more importantly, how. Lemme's book is about history and science of electric guitars, and is one of the most abundant in `why's' and `how's' that we could find on this subject, yet. Published in both German and English, it is plentiful of occasions to bring myths down. "Musicians tend not to think in technical terms but rather emotionally, and come up with poetic words for sounds, which cannot be upheld technically. An unbelievable cult has developed around pickups, inflamed by advertising managers and music magazines. This is for the most part hot air and is all about sales figures". The denounce is true, and not only for pickups, but for musical instruments in general. The good thing about that kind of comments is that they are supported by 287 pages of factual experience. "Electric Guitar - Sound Secrets and Technology" is easy to read; the choice of words is austere and precise; you must only, here and there, find your way around the occasional sentence which structure reveals the German language of the original. The more of 200 graphics and pictures leave little space for doubts, though. I have years under my belt in the professional guitar making business, but was greatly surprised of discovering a lot of contents that redefined my knowledge on many subjects, and that answered long held questions. I found many "blind" topics, too; those about things that I ignored that I ignored. This book balances and integrates theoretical and practical topics, all accompanied with the corresponding references in the form of tables, wiring diagrams and charts. It deals with the complete chain of sound from the strings to the amp, taking a deep look into each link of that chain: the pickups, the body, the electronics, and even the cable, which has a fundamental role that players and luthiers alike many times overlook. Guitar synthesizers have a dedicated chapter, too. The book ends up with a look into the passion of guitar collecting. This is a chapter in which the marketing resource of overusing the word "vintage" is demystified and replaced with clear tips to evaluate an instrument from an electrical, mechanical and ergonomic standpoint. All in all: if you are new to electric guitars, start here. If you are familiar with them, use this book to reach the next level. Don't get scared by the somewhat pricey tag. Highly recommended. ... show more
