  • BMW DIY owners, keep one around for a spare, because your IS going to fail!
Size: 11517521584
I won't bore you with the details, but it is by now common knowledge that the generation one BMW electric water pump that debuted with the N54 engines in 2007 is not supremely reliable. :-) That's why every DIY BMW guy needs to have one of these around. Now, with this economy priced unit through Amazon, you can justify pre-buying the pump. IF your pump fails and you have this spare sitting ready to go, you can be back on the road that afternoon (assuming you have the G048 coolant available too, or can go get some - it is common) As I said, BMW gen 1 electric coolant pumps are not the epitome of reliability. My 2007 E91 is on pump #3 right now, at 120,000 miles. This engine has always been babied, driven very gently, always garaged, correctly and routinely serviced, including correct coolant and flush on the right schedule. Thanks to this good care, pump #1 lasted 80,000 miles which was on the "above average" end of these pumps' service life, according to BMW. However, pump #2 was a Pierberg unit (German OEM) for which I foolishly spent almost 400 dollars. That one lasted 22,000 miles, which was terrible. I discovered after purchase that it was a "gen 3" design, so check your part numbers. FWIW, BMW is now on Gen 4 types. In my case, pump 3 has gone 18,000 miles so far and is "gen 4" design. Maybe it'll go 80k or 40k or whatever... THANKS TO THIS GREAT PRICED IMPORTED PUMP, I HAVE A SPARE ON THE SHELF FOR THE DAY WHEN IT FAILS! Call me a skeptic, but since my #2 pump failed after only 22,000, I went ahead and got this imported pump. I'm pretty sure it is every bit as good as the $400 Pierburg, since I got only 22,000 miles out of THAT one! :-) This pump includes the thermostat, which is a "replace at same time" item. I've done it both ways. Thermo #1 (80,000) I replaced. Thermo #2 which I put on with pump #2 (22,000) is still going strong after now 40,000 miles. (I only got the pump when I did #3) Nevertheless, I'll probably replace it when Pump #3 fails, and since this kit comes with one, it is an easy decision. Note that you should replace your lower hose and the inter-pump hose to thermostat as well. Having done this now 3. times, it is about a 2.5 hour job start to finish. (The first one took me 8 hours, including learning and pump research.) If you only replace the pump, it is possible to get it out from the bottom. REMEMBER: Flush and replace your coolant while you have the pump off. G048 is acceptable, and is widely available from many popular manufacturers. TRICK: If you are not sure about your old pump, pull of the back plate of the pump when you remove it. IF there is any antifreeze in there, it will have eaten your electronics. This means the rear seal on the pump shaft has failed and the corrosive antifreeze leaked into the electronics compartment, which caused your pump to fail. ;-) There are other failure motifs as well, but that's an easy one to help you toss the old pump in the recycle pile. Remember, you have to do the special purge procedure using a combination of dashboard controls (or service software) to initiate th purge. It is super easy. Youtube it "E90 BMW Coolant Purge". THIS PUMP LOOKS GOOD. Typical imported quality, includes thermostat, and I'm happy with what arrived. It was carefully packaged and includes all the necessary stuff, including the REQUIRED aluminum one use bolts. Enjoy your afternoon changing water pumps! ... show more

This is a nicely complete electric water pump and thermostat kit, comes with the pump itself, the preassembled thermostat cartridge assembly, even includes a wiring pigtail in case yoursnis damaged, and the bolts to secure the water pump.
