  • Works, but no XInput, wires are short.
The good and the bad: Everything seems to work generally as expected, but there are some glitches and annoyances. 1. The joystick emulates an analog joystick by default. This means you have to use the Mode button for games that require the D-Pad. The problem here is this kit does not have a button for the Mode switch, which really requires an LED (again, not included) to indicate the mode. 2. The wires are short. Too short. I'm pretty much going to have to buy a roll of hookup wire and solder longer leads to get the wiring in place. 3. This is not XInput compatible. So a bunch of games aren't going to work with it. In my case, I wanted to use it with Forza Horizon as a button box for gear shifting and other in-game controls. No joy. Forza Horizon simply doesn't detect this controller. So I ended up throwing these PCBs back in the box and ordering a keyboard encoder. The keyboard is pretty much guaranteed to work with any game, and I can assign the joysticks and buttons to any action I want by just plugging in to the jack for the key I want to use. So I'd say that this is a decent deal if you just need the switches, buttons, and joysticks, but if you want a quality joystick encoder with XInput support, I'd look for something else - maybe even buy an assembled arcade stick and pull the components. ... show more

  • Great buttons, joystick, and switches for the price. Boards do what needed, slight input lag
Everything works great. Decoder boards do what I need them to do. Only complaint is there is some slight input lag with the decoder boards. I notice this the most when using on NES and SNES emulators, and switching back and forth between using this decoder board, and using a wired Xbox One controller. But other than that, it does what I need it to. No issues with plug and play on both a Raspberry Pi 3, and a Windows 11 PC. EDIT: Ok, another complaint I should have mentioned. Wires are a little shorter than they should be. So expect to have to either mount the circuit boards really close to the buttons, or solder/crimp extensions on to the wires. Minor detail, still good for the price. Will still buy again. Just something to be aware of. ... show more

  • It's an ok set to get started
Short Version: I can already see myself replacing the components in this kit at some point. But it was a good enough kit for the money. Especially since I did not even know what to look for, or what all I needed. Long Version: I decided to throw myself at building an arcade cabinet, and with nearly everything else in hand, this was a convenient enough kit of buttons, joysticks, switches, cables and USB controllers. Probably it's best selling points are that it hit the budget I had, and it was all in one. I'm no arcade cabinet expert, and I honestly couldn't tell you why one part is desirable over another. But even still, deficiencies immediately reared their head. I'm not 100% sure what's going on with the joystick, but from time to time it feels like one mechanism is riding up on top of another, resulting in very loud, jarring clacks that don't sound or feel normal. Several of the switches had bowed legs which are supposed to contact the attached microswitch, and don't do a good job pushing the plunger on the microswitch unless you press them dead on, and hard. And as for the microswitches themselves, I had two wear out on me in about a week for my primary button. Also, it seems to take them too long to reset, meaning you can't even activate them as quick as a game like Gradius would let you. You'll be playing at a serious handicap in any button masher. So far I replaced my Player 1, Button 1 switch with a ZF-D44X and it's night and day. The switches in this kit might be ok for buttons that aren't used often. But you'll almost certain want to replace the switch on your primary button. I plan on replacing all of them. I have no complaints about the USB controllers or the cables yet. Depending on the layout of your control area, the cables might be a little short. But they are standard 2.54mm pitch connectors, and easy enough to make extensions for with a standard kit. Although if you have the kit and the crimper for that, maybe you'd be better off buying the quick connect terminals too and just making your own. I just used what I had on hand. ... show more

  • Connector Removal Fix
4 Stars due to good value and functional. The Good: Good value for the money. Encoder works as advertised on my PI4 Rasb OS. Plenty of buttons that have the 1980 retro shape. I would buy again just to get the encoder boards and have enough stuff to proof out my concept before actually buying and building with more expensive stuff. The Bad: Switches are a bit loud. Joystick in my case is too large and springy for circa 1981 defender (it works, but if you are after as close as you remember, this it not quite it). Connector Removal Fix: On the connectors I received (the button side tabs of the wires, not the controller board connector), on the middle portion of the lug, there is a small retainer dimple pointing inward towards the hole on each button tab. This ends up in the hole on the switch and its there to prevent the wires from falling off the switch. But it makes it hugely difficult to remove, like too much so. I took a small nail and positioned it on the dimple of the center portion of the lug and gave a small whack, enough to deflect it but not enough to do damage. It workes great. The connectors are now simply friction held in place. Crimp tighter if you need to. Do this before you get the connectors stuck in your cabinet. On the second picture the white wire is unmodified, and if you look careful the dimple faces inward to the switch tab. On the blue wire you see that it now faces outward and therefore unable to catch the hole on the switch. I hammered on a piece of 2x4. It requires a light touch, and you can feel the point of the nail touching the dimple. ... show more

  • Good joysticks
I was surprised at how well the joysticks work. Do be careful though. They are too long to fit in any of the pre-made fight stick cases. I made my own case to use the joysticks because I really like the feel of them. The buttons are a little sticky once you use the for a few hours.
