They filter. They're in a bag. They work as described. I have a submerged in a pond that I use these with. I seem to get a lot of debris and dirt because of the fish and the trees around the pond. I use a mesh bag around the pump which I then insert into the bag these balls come with and fill the gap with the bio balls. We have been using lava rock as a filtering media in our pond for a number of years and had noticed that we were getting more algae in the pond each year. I'm guessing that the lava rocks ultimately got clogged with algae. We decided to try the EasyPro BB05 Bio-Balls and have been very pleased. Our pond water is clear and pond plants are thriving. Have had my fish 8 x 15 4ft deep pond for over 3 years and is always struggling keeping clear water and free from turning green, and when I got the clear water, would only last for a short time. I placed the bag of bio-balls in my water fall reservoir where all the water will cycled through and within 24 hours noticed the water to begin to clear. Since the purchase of these bio-ball a month ago, my pond water has been clear and I also notice the poly mesh filter in my skimmer needs to be cleaned a lot less.     • Would love to find a smaller version for my fountains
Don't understand the science behind this, but it works as described. A bare pump in the pond clogs after 3-5 days, but with the pump inside the pouch with these bio-balls, can go for a long time without clogging. Would love to find a smaller version for my fountains.

    • Working great - just a little pricey for what it is
Item was received as expected. Got a bag and all the bio-balls to fill it. Just wish it was a little more affrodable BUT if the quality and life of these is good i'll consider it a good investment. Hopefully i'll remember to update this post a year from now and provide an update :)

Ended up using 600 of these little guys and have zero ammonia in a fairly heavily stocked pond. I run the water through 30 gallons of gravel then into a 15 gallon bucket full of the bio balls.

These were inexpensive and exactly what we were looking for. We use them inside the bags around our submersible pumps as well as in our falls filter.
