Perfect winch for my DIY garage hoist. Replaced a cheaper Harbor Freight version that lasted under 1 year. Dutton-Lainson is much better build quality out of box, complete with well-greased worm gear. I run it with a slow drill, just avoid access speed and any temptation to use an impact driver—keep lube cool. Worth the cost. ... show more

I bought this as a gift and as it turns out, it’s a good quality winch, but the box did not include a socket for use with a drill. I don’t know what size socket should possibly have been included but according to the listing, all the pieces are accounted for, just keep in mind you might need to procure a socket, separately. ... show more

Winch is pretty well made and worked just fine under no load. I greased up the worm gear and bearings. The technique to attach the cable is very unusual and difficult to get tight. Update I still like the winch. However the technique to attach the cable to the winch by weaving in in the 3 holes (1/2 inch) is unsuitable. The cable keeps working loose. The cable I am using is 3/16 stainless steel. Very springy. I found a better technique I put 2 10-32 stainless steel bolts and washers with lock nuts in with the cable in the holes. Stainless was used for a marine environment. Based on several uses I would probably recommend the largest size bolt that can fit with your cable and put this in all three holes with cable. See picture BTW this cable attachment technique is not approved by Dutton-Lainson and in this regard my not be safe for everyone. Test your own attachment technique. ... show more

Went with the Harbor Freight one originally and itself destructed, in about a day 6-8 cycles of testing. Not only that, it was worm geared backwards, which I believe may have contributed to its downfall. This one seems much nicer. Using it to lift a retractable staircase that uses a block and tackle style setup for the cables.So I am nowhere near its weight capacity. Using with 3/16 cable. Doesn't come with the cable, so just be aware of that. With the forty 21 gear ratio and the block and tackle system, it does take forever to lift and lower.But it is nice that it holds position. ... show more

So i decided to build a small dump trailer. I've built a few trailers, but never a dump. First I purchased a belt style thinking I could make that work "wrong" but it was fun to play that strap when it was under a load, sounded like a mouth harp. So then I read about the worm drive winch that holds its position under load, no need for a locking mechanism. So off to harbor freight to pick up their inexpensive one. One load the winch gears were toast, so I spent the money and purchased this one with the hex drive so I could run it with a cordless drill. I'm impressed, I lubed it up and have run this thing up and down, under a 2000lb load of mulch. Stays right where you stop, smooth and steady up or down, and virtually effortless with my little drill. I love this thing so much I bought another for a future project. holy Cow, These things are awesome. If you plan to use a drill to run this winch(highly recommended if you use it a lot or the length is very far) then opt for the (WG2000HEX) you get a handle with a socket that is removable then just get a socket to fit in your drill. If you already have one with the handle, you can just purchase the hex drive to swap out in your unit like I did or use two nuts against each other like a jam nut and remove the handle. ... show more
