  • Great Sound - But, As You've Heard, QC/Build/Customer Service Needs Work
I'm glad I took the plunge after a year of research, debating whether or not trying a new driver technology (new to me) would be worth the money - it was [mostly] worth it. The sound quality is fantastic, in my opinion. It's like listening to my full range floor speakers: treble and bass are distinct from each other (thanks to the inherent "speed" of a planar magnetic driver, as opposed to having a dedicated driver for each range). I now know what "sub-bass" means (and, on that note, "speed"). Where my AKG K240S's were unable to give me bass where I knew there should be some, the HiFiMan HE-4XX gave me back my missing bass, without "muddying" the trebles, but, at the same time, the treble doesn't have that "sparkle" (another term I now actually understand after reading all those audiophile forums) that my AKG had. Very well could be because I tore all the foam and mesh out of my AKG to make them more open and airy. I hesitate to make any modifications to the HE-4XX, but I've seen some mods floating around regarding taking out the filters, etc. We'll see - I don't really like the idea of hairs/dust getting into these drivers. Now about that build quality. At first glance it was fine. Headband is okay, materials are pretty nice, metal is sturdy, a bit stiff at first but loosens nicely over time. However, the tension on the headband adjustment points, where the headband connects to the metal frame, is too high, does not adjust smoothly, and is not consistent across the sides - one is more "jumpy" than the other side. Also, neither side stays where I've set them because that tension is too high, so the headphones naturally push down to their shortest fitting if you're not wearing them... and while you're wearing them. I had a rattling in my right ear cup after a few days. Only when I jostled it/moved it just right. I noticed it at first when moving the headphone, then later in a song. I reached out to HiFiMan customer service and they were quick to suggest that I remove the ear pad and check for debris, etc. No debris was found, but looking through the driver with a light, it looked like a wire was touching the drive on the other side (outer side). I asked them if they could do something about it - as well as the rusting screws on the metal pivots at the ear cup connection - and they took all of my information... then went radio silent. I had asked if they would send me a replacement while mine was being worked on, if that was even an option, and, of course, there was no answer to my question (does *any* customer service group actually answer the questions you ask?). Since they took my address down, I assumed they were sending me a box or something, but then I read the actual warranty and it suggests that shipping costs, etc. on on the customer... so it was then that I decided I'd take the grill off and do what I could. I wasn't happy about having to open up my headphone to that extent as soon as I was, but I also wasn't keen on having to box the thing up and pay for shipping, maybe to only get a refurbished-something back, maybe in worse condition, etc. Took the grill off, saw that a wire was making direct contact with the driver between the magnets. Pull the wired up and bent it a bit so that it would lean across the magnets instead of in between. I didn't tell them to cancel the ticket right away. I wanted to see what they would do/say. A week and a half later, I tell them to cancel the ticket. Not that they're listening anyway, right? Then I get a clicking in my *left* ear cup. That's just today. A different sound than the wire thing - sounds like the driver is moving when I press on the ear cup with *any* force - not pressing them into my head like a lunatic or anything, just taking them off/putting them on. Normal usage forces, stock ear pads. I think it might be debris, and I'm over the honeymoon stage/paranoia of opening them up, and... oh, did I mention that the ring on the right grill isn't even flush with the headphone? There's one section that sticks up that shouldn't. Anyway, I open the left ear cup and there's no debris except what was already in there from the factory (not nothing, mind you). But I do notice a little orange debris here and there. Now that I think about it, I saw some on the grill on the other side at some point, figured it was dust. Didn't think it'd be rust (the screws I complained about weren't all that bad - maybe even added character to the headphone). A couple of screws in my left ear cup are rusted to heck. These headphones came like this. My house is dry as a desert in the winter, the heater is always on and I can't even breath at night is how bad it is. I *wish* we had enough moisture in the air to make something like this happen. No, these were rusted when I got them, and I'm only just now finding out. That bit of orange debris here and there was rust, probably. So, I now have a clicking that I can't fix on my end, I don't think, and, taking a closer look, I have a rusted internal screw on the right side, too, but it's not as bad. So, at least 4 rusted screws, two of which are so bad, you can barely tell those are even screws. I've emailed customer service again, asked them to maybe not close the ticket yet, see what they can do for me, send me a pack of replacement screws at the very least so I can swap in clean ones. I'm willing to do that. They sound good enough that I don't want to not have them, and I really don't want to pay for shipping on... this thing that should have been sent to me in perfect condition to begin with, but just wasn't because... they just didn't feel like it? Because they couldn't just use normal, rust-resistant screws that *literally* every other headphone manufacturer uses? I've never had a headphone see any rust, on any part, in my 25 years of wearing headphones. What in the world. So, there you go. The rumors are true. Quality control/materials needs work. Customer service is not amazing. Warranty is nothing special. Oh, and the stock cable is a cable. It's not great. It's not long enough for comfortable PC/ living room AV receiver use for me, so I ordered a replacement cable when I bought the headphone. The replacement cable is that red one that everybody else is buying. I clipped the "braided" part off, and now they're really cool looking red cables. They click really nicely into the headphones - better click than the stock cable. Ah, and the clamping force/weight of these are much higher than my AKG were. Going back to the K240S is like putting a cloud on my head compared to these (I have aftermarket, plush pads on those), but shoot, the HiFiMan sound so good, I'm not going to go back to my other cans any time soon (or dynamic drivers, unless someone can convince me that an Audeze LCD-2 isn't my endgame, because I imagine it would be. I was going to say HiFiMan Sundara, but now I'm not so sure I want to take anymore risks, you know?) ... show more

  • Bass on these rumble! The sound signature is really fun but it didnt quite meet the mark for detail.
These were great for the price, they sound very unique to all the different pairs of headphones I’ve tried. Shp9500, dt770, akg mk240, shp9600, fostex t50rp, hd599 etc….. Bass these are bass focused!!: The bass goes the lowest I’ve ever heard in an open back, it really doesn’t overpower most of the frequency range (Except for 250hz-500hz…cant be fixed with eq!!! ) if you decide to add more bass through equalizer, and if you do..! oh boy they get really nice sub bass better than a dt770 meaning, no distortion at the same volume as the dt770 and its especially dependent on if you get a proper amp. Which if you do my recommendation is going balanced amp/dac combo with these for the price. absolutely avoid zen dacv2, and get the fiio k7, that bass boost button on the zen just adds distortion manual eq is leagues better. If k7 is too much id recommend the schiit heresy with an apple dongle :D Mids: Mids sound a little drawn back and lost in detail they just cant be focused on no matter how hard I eqed the mids and upper mids. The voices still sounded somewhat boxy, and this is mostly what caused me to return them; along with how warm they sounded, and how warm they got on my head after long gaming sessions. Treble: these have some bright sibilant treble not beyerdynamic bright but just enough to be eqd down that the treble made my eyes go O.O, they are really really good for detail in the treble range and my treble sensitive ears. Build quality: really good for the first few weeks I had them I didn’t get a bad unit. For me if my review covinced you to not get the 4xx’s. The next headphones Id honestly prefer is he400se/He-x4’s they both have the same sound signature, they sound better for detail and at a better price point (60 bucks cheaper.) Sound signature of hex4/he400se: These headphones have faster and tight sound which means punchy bass not affecting detail in any part of the frequency range. This means they’re in the top 10 of all headphones for electronic music/pop, they just dont go as low for sub bass vs the he4xx which means if you prefer a bass rumble on a headphone vs not having a punch I’d actually recommend grabbing the 4xx’s. The 4xx’s are pretty much basically the skullcandy crusher of most openbacks thats how much bass rumble they can have with proper eqing/power/volume. Final thoughts!!! Get the 4xx’s if you want really nice-full extended bass in an open back, awesome soundstage, don’t mind a little heat, and enjoy vibrantly bright headphones, than try the 4xx’s out you might not even be disappointed even satisfied if you enjoy rumbling bass, with a big soundstage. With all of this the only drawback is that the mids are a little lost in detail and if you prefer detail over rumbly bass and want some punch to the bass grab the he-x4’s! ... show more

  • Fantastic headphones
Don’t know how you could beat these for the price. They sound much better than my DT 1990 Pro’s. Of course they are not as good as my Focal Clear’s but for one fourth the price they can’t be beat. They are really, really good.
