  • My New Favorite Drone
Color: Dark Blue
I have been playing with drones for about 2 years. I started with a couple of JJRC H8C's. First one got stuck in a tree (and finally fell down about a year later) and so I ordered another. But after a while I got tired of replacing brushed motors. Motors were cheap but replacement was a pain. I then bought a DJI Phantom Standard. It is beautifully built and flies wonderfully. I also have some mini indoor drones. I wanted something with brushless motors, which are many times more powerful and reliable than brushed motors, that I could fly indoors or outdoors. It's been 1.5 years since I bought the Phantom and drones have progressed greatly in that time . I eventually came around to the Bugs 3 Mini (yes, I know this is not the Mini, more on that below). It had good reviews and most importantly it seemed to have a lot of support from aftermarket, dealers and especially the drone forums. I also wanted to buy it in the US and not from China because of probable delays in support if I needed it. I found Drocon because their price was the best. It arrived 2 days later on Saturday even though I chose Free Shipping. Packaging was sturdy and the drone box itself could be used as a carrying case (if you remove the props) The Bugs 3 Drone is nicely made. It was little over 1/2 the size of my Phantom which surprised me. I did not realize it was not the Mini. It is lightweight but solidly assembled. It flies so smoothly. The motors are powerful and as nice as those on the Phantom. I have come to realize that the motors are a very important consideration in terms of performance and reliability. Now, this is a FPV hobby racing drone and this version only has 6 axis gyro stabilization. If you have no experience with drones, I think you could still fly this as long as you start slow. The controls have a low speed and high speed response setting. No GPS, no compass, and no altitude hold ( I kinda wish I had that but as I get better, I am enjoying the challenge). Unlike the DJI, if you let go of the controls, the drone will start drifting with any wind and change altitude. You must fly it all the time, but again, it is exciting, especially compared to the Phantom. And also compared to the Phantom or H8C, it is FAST. Better have a big field if you want to explore all it's capabilities. But around my backyard, I can fly it slowly and smoothly. Control is very precise. After a while, I noticed the motors started sounding a little uneven. I contacted Drocon thru the chat box on their website. I spoke with Dianne who answered immediately. I explained the situation and they had me run drone without propellers. It ran smoothly. They asked me if I could send a video and so a couple of days later after rain, I could try. Motors made same uneven sound and hovering I could see it was vibrating. Could it be propellers? I changed to the second set that comes with the drone and it seemed to fly good again. I examined the propellers and sure enough the tip of one was slightly bent. It looked like a manufacturing defect. I got back on Drocon's website and opened chatbox. This time I spoke with Ellaine. She immediately had all the info from previous conversation. I explained that problem was probably the propeller as it seemed to be flying okay with new ones. I sent pictures of the blade and while they examined them, I was working on editing the video they had requested expecting to have to buy another backup set of propellers. I was sure they would think I crashed it. Instead, after 5 minutes or so, they came back and said they were going to send me a whole new drone and to keep the old one for parts. WHAA? I could not believe it. I am ecstatic. To finish, as I was searching online for reasons the flying seemed to be getting unstable, I came to realize I had actually purchased the Bugs 3 and not the Bugs 3 Mini, they look so much a like. The price of the Mini was actually higher than the regular Bugs 3. I am so glad I got the Bugs 3. I am going to be getting the FPV camera and viewing screen soon, but it is a blast even without it. I am also going to be getting a Mini because these are made so nice. It is hard to believe the price of these is under $100 (base price without FPV). It is less than twice the price of the H8C which is a flimsy toy with toy motors compared to the Bugs 3. And I am going to be buying from Drocon from now on. ... show more

  • Pretty amazing drone
I'm so impressed with the Drocon MJX Bugs 3 that the quadcopter demands a review! I would consider myself an "intermediate" pilot, beginning with toy drones, brushed motors, etc. I've experienced all of the aches, pains, and crashes of learning to fly. I'll focus my review on those who may be shopping for a beginner-to-intermediate drone. Just to be fair, however, I believe even the most experienced pilots would have a blast with the Bugs 3. I've read reviews stating this quadcopter may not really be suitable for beginners due to not having headless mode, altitude hold, or any of the SAFE technology. I will challenge those reviews and say that most of those attributes, while valuable, can be overcome if new pilots have wide open spaces to learn. Take the time to read the manual and know the functions of the transmitter. It seems rather simple when you read the material and look at the diagrams, but it can be much different once the drone is in the air. A common mistake of beginner pilots is to flip the throttle stick full-tilt and hold on tight. Panic sets in, the drone disappears, and your flying experience is less than favorable! And with the brushless motors on the Bugs 3, that baby will disappear fast at full throttle! There are two speed-modes on the Bugs 3, and I would recommend "slow" mode for all beginners. It's a simple click of a button on the transmitter, which will produce a single tone from the transmitter. If it beeps twice, you're in "fast" (hold on tight) mode in which the drone is far more snappy and responsive. Move slowly with all movements on the transmitter sticks, and you'll soon see how much control you really have. A slight slide on the throttle stick results in noticeable altitude gains, so moving in very small increments will help you learn control. Early in your learning process, you can find a sweet spot between 1/4 to 1/3 throttle in which you somewhat create your own "altitude hold". It may hover 4-6 feet off the ground, but you'll find it. That will allow you the opportunity to leave the throttle alone and focus on slight movements and/or trimming the drone. You'll get roughly 15 minutes of flight time on the battery that's included, so you can take your time learning the movements and functions. Just remember....small movements on the sticks. As you improve, the extra power and function will be there! If you choose to fly on windy days and keep the drone at a reasonable altitude (10-15 feet), mild-to-moderate winds will have little impact on the flight pattern. It is incredibly stable in flight, and it has more than enough power to cut through winds, even in "slow" mode. This drone has an abundance of power! Understanding the function and value of the prop guards, I still chose not to install them. With the guards in place, a moderately rough landing will often result in the props making contact with the guards, which can slightly damage the props. They provide an extra set of 4 props, which is a nice bonus. I also didn't install the extended landing gear or camera mount as I choose to fly w/o a camera. I can always add them if I decide to do some aerial photography. The flight time is impressive and not exaggerated in the description on the site. Minus the prop guards, extended landing gear, and camera mount, I average 15:05 in flight time with 1/2 throttle flights in both "slow" and "fast" modes. I purchased a more powerful second battery (Engpow 7.4v 3000mah) that consistently averages 20:48 flight times. Obviously there are various factors (attachments, wind, throttle management) that could improve or decrease your flight times, but this far exceeds many of the other beginner drones. If you're a beginner and willing to take the time to learn the drone, I'm confident the Bugs 3 will far exceed your expectations. Do some reading, assemble the drone (15-20 minutes), and get yourself to open spaces! And remember....small movements on the sticks! ... show more
