Description

The 2976 Chelsea boot has all the toughness, fit and ease of use as its Victorian predecessors plus killer style. It serves up all the signature Doc's details like iconic stitching, grooved sides and heel-loops. Built to last, this unisex boot is forged using one of the finest methods of construction: utilizing a Goodyear welt and heat-sealing it to the sole. The 2976 is made with highly durable leather and sits on an AirWair sole, which is oil and fat resistant with good abrasion and slip resistance. Use Dr. Martens Wonder Balsam to protect the leather and keep your boots clean, soft and supple. Dr. Martens is the stuff of legends. It all began near Munich, Germany in 1945 when Dr. Klaus Maertens injured his foot in a skiing accident in the Bavarian Alps. To make walking easier during the healing process, he designed a shoe with an air-cushioned sole. Using old rubber tires, he constructed soles that had air trapped within closed compartments. He showed his prototype to his engineer/inventor friend, Dr. Herbert Funck, and together they decided to develop and produce the shoes. Not only did the shoe solve the doctor's immediate problem, but it also started to sell well in Germany. By 1959 the two decided that they needed a company to produce and distribute the shoes, then called Dr. Maertens, in other parts of the world. At first, many manufacturers rejected the concept of an air cushioned sole as a short-lived gimmick. However, the R. Griggs Group, located in the village of Wollaston in England, decided to go along with the idea by creating the first work boot with the revolutionary sole. On the first of April 1960, the first cherry red eight-eyelet work boot was produced and named 1460. To sell the brand name better in England, the name was anglicized to Dr. Martens. The range was branded AirWair and the rest is history.

I ordered my normal size, which is a 13. I rushed to put them on and, to my dismay, I couldn’t get my foot past the upper. Eventually, I’ll get something similar with laces instead.

    • Very comfortable but looks huge.
Surprisingly comfortable on the first try! I wore it for a few hours the day I got it and was completely fine walking around, and that was with pretty thin poly-blend socks. My shoe size is EU 38 which translates to a US 7.5 or 8 depending on the brand. I should have bought it in UK 5 but got size UK 6 since it was available and on sale for $70.Very glad I did because they were a good deal and turned out to be really comfortable. Just a little loose, though not to the point where my feet were sliding in them but like I'm wearing my size in wide. My toes are really happy because there's plenty of room in the toe box, the 2976 being unisex shoes. Very beautiful burgundy color, I thought the black stitching would be super glaring against the deep red leather but it turned out to be fine. It does look HUGE, even bigger than my rain boots. Compared to my other shoes these look like they are 2 or 3 sizes larger. Almost all docs are shaped this way, just have to get used to it. ... show more

Take a day or two to break in but great boots after that. I usually wear a 7.5 and I got a 7. Fit great with regular socks, a little tight with thick socks. They are a little heavy and bulky but that is to be expected with DMs and steel toes.

I ordered these to replace my Danner Acadia's as a uniform boot. I wanted something that was lighter, shineable, and could be donned and doffed quickly and easily. I was a little worried that the sole wouldn't be dark enough and would stand out, however I can say that save for dress occasions the sole color isn't noticeable. These boots took a little breaking in to get comfortable, but now that they've been broken in they are nice. They shine up really good with Lincoln Shoe Polish and the leather appears to be quality. I've noticed no discernible wear on them in the month I've used them. As far as sizing goes, these were as expected. I wear a size 12 in most "American" type boots, and a size 13 in most Asian import athletic shoes. I ordered a size 12 in these and they fit perfect. I will need to order another pair for casual wear as they look really good with jeans. Overall very pleased and an excellent alternative to Romeos. ... show more
