This kit is a good tool set to have around when you don't know exactly what you will need but you want to have something usable on hand without spending too much. The numerous bits and consumables cover the vast majority of needs. My car's HVAC blower motor recently failed and I used the long and short philips head screwdriver, as well as the ratchet 10mm socket to replace it. Every tool I needed was in the kit. A major con however, is that these tools are lower quality - which is fine, but they cheaped out on one of the most critical parts: the ratchet to 10mm socket adapter had a chunk of metal that wasn't properly sanded down. So in order to attach it to the ratchet I used the hammer to smash it in, and it worked and I was able to use it. Problem is, now the adapter is stuck on the ratchet, removing it will be another whole ordeal. ... show more

The DOWELL 168-Piece Mechanic Tool Set arrived in a super sturdy hard-sided case. No instructions come with; but hey, it’s a tool set so I’m sure we can figure it out! Everything you can imagine needing, minus power tools, comes in this complete set. These are not a cheap tool set. They are nicely weighted tools that feel heavy duty with exception of a couple of pieces that I will list below. The hammer is small. It’s really more of an indoor, household project hammer as opposed to an industrial use sized hammer. The hacksaw couldn’t hold up to a sheet of metal that was 1/32”. The blade came off 1/2” into the cut. Reinstalled the blade and it made it another 1/2” before bending into a completely unusable state. So, that was pretty disappointing. The hacksaw itself is very small. It’s suited to a small hand. A hand with a meaty grip isn’t even going to fit knuckles around the handle. It does come with 2 blades but, if you plan to use this hacksaw at all, you better make it a cardboard cutting project. Next, the tool count is a little misleading. Each individual screw and wall anchor is counted as one individual piece. The screwdrivers are magnetic, as is the level. The tape measure is also pretty small measuring only 3m (9 ft 10 in). The socket wrench has a nice ergonomic design which gives your knuckles clearance when using it. Several of the tools, such as the adjustable wrench for example, have multi-purpose tools included in them. Overall, a nice tool set that will handle all your household tasks as well as a few heavy duty tasks. I honestly see this as more of a household set than an automobile set. It could’ve included a better hacksaw and a measure tape that actually measures a single bedroom area. There is plenty of unused area within the case to allow for some of the tools to be a little larger. In the end, I’ll need to purchase some extra tools to replace the overly small ones. Even though there are a couple of small tool issues in this set, it is still well worth the price. ... show more

I have given away a large number of tool kits in my life. It's my go-to gift for people who are buying a new home/condo and who don't already have a lot of tools. It's a gift that is ALWAYS appreciated. And it helps them avoid that otherwise difficult moment when someone comes over to help with some of the things that are required when you move in, and when they're asked "where do you keep your tools" the answer is "uh, I think there's a screwdriver somewhere in the basement." These combo tool kits come in all sorts of configurations. Typically, the lower-end sets have one pair of pliers, a bunch of screwdriver bits and a bit holder, maybe a hammer, one or two other things, and a box of screws or something like that to bulk up the piece count. This kit is impressively more complete. Among the stuff here: ** 3 pairs of pliers ** hammer ** decent quality wire stripper ** box cutter ** hacksaw + extra blades ** 9" level ** adjustable wrench ** 6 piece box wrench set ** 9 piece Allen wrench set ** 23 sockets + quick release ratchet ** 4 x screwdrivers ** 5 x precision screwdrivers ** 30x screwdriver bits + bit holder handle ** 4x spring loaded clamps ** custom molded storage case That's a lot of very useful stuff, and for a lot of people, this may be the only set of tools they'd ever use. Now, this is not high-end stuff. If you use tools as part of your work, or you're a craftsperson, your tools are better than these, and you don't want this to replace what you use. These are tools for the occasional user/homeowner/etc. That said, these are better than, say, what you'd find in the dollar store. These are not junk. They just probably won't hold up to the rigors of daily use--if you're the kind of person who needs tools of that qualtiy. There are certain items in this kit that are better than others. For example, the hacksaw is quite small and if you were going to make any significant use of a hacksaw, you'd probably want a bigger one. The hammer is also fairly small--although fine for light stress jobs. The sockets and box wrenches are metric-sized. (There are two types, metric and SAE; SAE is more common in the US). Since there is a good range of socket sizes, this is probably not a huge issue, since you can often find a metric size that is "close enough" to an SAE size. But I guarantee that anyone who works with tools for a living is going to mention that if they look at this set. On the whole, this will be my new go-to as a gift for home starters. If you become serious about using tools a lot, you can slowly add new pieces when you need them. But this is a super starter set, and more than enough to avoid a friend coming over and exclaiming "I can't believe you don't have [xxxx]!"--and then exasperatedly saying that they are going back home to get their own tools.
