  • Great device, software crashes often on Android, occasionally loses video

Recommended tablet Nexus 7 crash's often on Android Nougat, many spelling and grammatical errors in the documentation. Luckily the app isn't needed for actual flight. It doesn't seem like DJI is doing a lot to support the buggy untested software they released. Many people are having this same issue. Until DJI fixes it or someone finds a workaround it would be best to keep your Phantom in your line of site (a requirement of the FAA anyways). But if you are flying near tree's or other objects trying to get a nice shot you may expect to be able to use the camera to precisely position yourself. I have already tried wiping the system cache, freeing several GB of storage etc. Until DJI fixes this, I would recommend that people include the software problems when they review on Amazon. You can't use the drone to its full potential without software. Other than the constant crashes (some can't even get into the app) its a fine device. It literally flies itself and you just tell it where to go. Another frequent issue is the video stream itself stops and you see the last image of the camera before the stream stops. The telemetry is still coming in but no video. DJI needs to recognize that the stream may not be perfect and may even be temporarily interrupted. Having to close the app and restart is not a fix. This occurs even in the beginner mode where it limits the distance your drone can fly from you. And I live in a small town with no cell towers nearby, not a urban area. This does not appear to be an isolated incident and a simple Google search or review of other reviews will show many have the same issue. Worldwide Android is running on over two thirds of the mobile devices in use (marketshare.com), DJI needs to realize that people are going to be attempting to use Android devices with a Phantom. DJI Phantom 4 and Nexus 6 running Nougat 7.0.1 & Nexus 7 2013 model (Still an awesome tablet for the money!) 04/19/2017 - Updated to add another two stars. The device does work great with a Nexus 5. Had used it briefly after sunset while catching sunset pictures. It does a pretty job once the sun goes below the horizon. Was able to take 'useable' pictures with a 1S shutter time. Amazingly still!! Like a flying tripod! 05/27/2017 - DJI appears to be trying to force people to update to their latest firmware at which point you have to login again. If you do not, you will be limited to flying very lower and and within a 50' radius of the launch site. Please Google this issue as well as the Android crashes before deciding to purchase. 02/18/2018 - Tablet says to up date, DJI Assistant "Cannot load firmware list." Its a nice drone when it works, updates seem to come once a month. If you plan on using it, try it out a few days in advance to get all the updates out of the way. The update process is flawed and could be a lot better, especially with the frequency of updates. Awesome when it works! It literally flies itself! You tell it where you want to go and it handles the flight model. I have seen it get caught in a gust of wind and it automatically recovered itself. Not that I could have done anything myself, it was noticed AFTER the flight while watching the video on the big screen! Nice SAVE!!! Update: it looks like firmware updates have fixed most of the crash and video loss problems! WOOT! The biggest problem now is sometimes the DJI App doesn't recognize the Phantom as being connected. 05/25/2018 - Charged up all batteries, verified full charges, firmware, empty memory card etc. for an important event the next day. 05/26/2018 - Remote controller started beeping a few minutes after take off reporting low battery, flew a few really quick & short flights as this was to be used for an important event, a friend of the family was doing his Eagle Scout project, building a bridge. Figured maybe the charger was loose and the controller battery never fully charged. 05/27/2018 - tried charging controller, appeared to take a full charge (quickly) but again, controller started beeping soon after pre-flight was finished. Some Google searchs revealed that this could be the dreaded battery issue which seemed pretty commonplace. Batteries in controller are meant not to be user serviceable. 07/30/2018 - Update, haven't heard back from DJI. I would like to be able to get my controller repaired but they dont seem to respond with information on where and how much it might be. As it stand now my controller gives a low battery warning after about two minutes. Why does the controller need lipo batteries? Wouldn't Nimh be better choice for the controller? Especially standard ones that can be replaced or at least last longer than one year. 05/24/2019 - Tried contacting DJI again, this time on the website instead of email. They gave me a printed 1Z (UPS shipping label) immediately! 06/08/2019 - Package was recieved, assessed and paid for on the 11th. $88! Woot! A new controller would have run over $300 and chances are it would have sat around on a shelf for years and could very well have come with the same battery issue. Chances are the repair service would be my best chance at a new fresh battery and professionally installed as well! Grudgingly I would have paid around $200 so $88 was a pleasant surprise especially since they paid for the shipping label to them and include return shipping. The entire process took four days once it arrived and am very happy and once again optimistic to return to the skies with my DJI Phantom 4! DJI has what could and should be considered a model repair process. I dont mean the drone as a model but one that other companies should emulate. The website shows the status & history of your repair. Even once they repair the device, they break down the process with repaired, tested and quality assurance phases and then ship it back and let you know the 1Z so you can watch the shipping! I particularly liked the photo they took of the problem and provided it on the webpage. Woot! All stars returned for this review! DJI ROCKS! I was scared off originally reading nightmare stories on the Internet and can now say that people should give DJI a chance to make things right! If you have the dreaded battery issue or whatever, send it in! What do you have to lose? Use the website instead of email and you should be flying in no time! ... show more

It was like new, at least until I flew it into a tree. Works great, but the cradle on the control will not squeeze down small enough to hold my iPhone SE, which had to be sideways for the DJI GO four app, which is needed to fly. So I ordered an iPad mini, only to find that it is not compatible with the DJI GO 4 app. However, the iPad mini 3 works fine. Go ahead and order the extra battery or two and an extra set of blades and a sun shade. I would buy this one again. ... show more

I got a new one when I ordered a refurbished. I'm happy. It's my baby and works great. Love it. Landing gears are a little weak. There are some cracks in the landing gears. My Phantom 3 had no problems and I landed it much harder as a beginner.

I bought my phantom 4 and was so excited to get it!! When I finally took it out and was ready to fly, it prompted me to do a compass calibration. I did it more then ten times with the same "Compass error. Please calibrate the compass." I call the dji tech support (might as well call McDonald's instead, they could probably get you a better answer😂" I have a 30 minute conversation and the guy basically yelling into the phone telling me to do the same steps over and over. Going to return it and get the Mavic. I hope you don't fall into the same trap I did. *UPDATE* 7/4/17 I got my money back, so my review goes to two stars. Still not a good product. ... show more

  • Beware, quite working after 6 months after 3 flights

So as with most companies in the world today, be prepared to be ripped off. I paid $799 for this refurbished drone and 6 months later it stopped working. I sent it in for warranty repair and they said it was not covered under the one year warranty because it was not a product failure. Well, I flew it on 3 different days and never crashed it so why would it be my fault it stopped working? The WORSE part is they actually said it would cost $904 to repair it! More than I paid for it! Obviously they only need to replace a part in and not the controller, battery, etc so what an insult to quote a repair that should be under warranty and for more than the complete purchase price!!! DJI will never get my business again and will use a different manufacturer in the future. It also showed up with a European charging cord so I had to buy a replacement. ... show more
