  • 5.0 out of 5 stars A Smashing Good Time for All Ages
Platform For Display: PlayStation 4 Edition: Standard
Just finished off the 2.0 Avengers campaign. I have to say, it was a total blast from start to finish (no pun intended). The character sculpts are wonderful, and in game, Iron Man and Thor are the two you're going to play with the most. The Black Widow is fast with hand to hand combat, but she just doesn't have the same impact as the other two heroes. I must admit, however, building up her skill levels results in some very cool dual handed bullet bursts. This makes her one deadly force in the Power Disc game, Escape from Klyn. In the main adventure, Black Widow's disadvantage is that she can't fly, so getting around New York City at decent pace requires a vehicle. Oh, they're readily available right from the start, but it kills the high energy flow when having to make pit stops to summon fast transportation. With Iron Man and Thor, you press a button, you levitate and another button sends you soaring at heart pumping speeds - - no wheels required. I can't comment on the other characters, as I haven't opened anything additional, but I'm getting ready to dive into Guardians of the Galaxy. Yes, there are TONS of enemy frost creatures on the Loki side of the fence, so get use to fighting the same type of icy cold enemy over and over (with variations in their sizes and abilities). Also, like the 1.0 edition, missions can feel repetitive at times. This may bother some, but between the number of awesome moves, and the very welcomed Skill Tree, every fight felt like grand scale mayhem The insane abilities and special moves of your Super Hero are a sight to behold. Even the interaction with the surroundings is so well done. I also found the missions to be less frustrating then some of drawn out ones from 1.0 (except for Pirates which was my fav from that set). There is so much to do with the starter set, that you really feel like you're getting your money's worth. You have the main campaign, plus the two power discs, each containing their own full game. These power disc-based games are of much smaller scale when compared to the main adventure, but believe me, both games are beefy enough to stand on their own. Interestingly enough, it appears there are two more games (as the menu shows) ready for when Brave and Stitch are released. Plus you have the official playsets that are sold separately ( Guardians of the Galaxy and Ultimate Superman). Then of course, all roads lead to the beloved Toy Box where you can do just about anything. Avalanche studios packed in an insane amount of new toys, gadgets, interiors (now you can build indoors), landscapes, skyboxes and more. If you don't feel like you have the skills or time to build your own game, then download one of many offerings from the community. One of the best changes to the new 2.0 system is the way you obtain new objects from the Toy Box. Gone is that annoying, random "Wheel of Misfortune" style toy dispenser where you had to rely on luck to get the item you needed; now you simply purchase items with blue sparks which are easily earned throughout your adventures. No more spending your life backtracking through a completed game to try to find toys you may have missed. Not all items are readily available, but as you make a purchase, more goodies are unlocked through a branching system. There are a number of other areas I didn't cover (hall of heroes / Super heroes, survival mode, the game-like tutorial, etc..), but overall, I say if you're a Marvel SH fan, this is the game you want. In fact, this makes the best use of the franchise yet! You may find yourself addicted enough to start collecting all the characters, even the 1.0 cast, who work perfectly in the 2.0 ToyBox (they too have stats now!). And in closing, I'm of many fans who have a feeling that the next in the series will be Star wars (2015). Talk about a new hope! ... show more

  • 3.0 out of 5 stars Easy gaming for the kids, but gets expensive fast
Platform For Display: PlayStation 4 Edition: Standard
This set is what you need to get started with the Disney Infinity 2.0 universe - it includes the game disc (required for any gameplay), Infinity Base (where you put the characters), and the Avengers Toybox Disc (the game content). You also get three figures (Iron Man, Thor, and Black Widow) as your in-game characters. To select characters you place these figures onto the Infinity base. The actual gameplay is very easy - any kid can pick up a controller and get going... but the more you put time into it, the more you realize that there's not much variety to the gameplay itself. It felt like you're doing one of three things - standard "beat up all enemies" missions, "find an item, go find the next" missions, or "bring something somewhere" missions. The backstory to the game isn't that engaging either. In fact, Lego marvel Super Heroes is so much better. As for the figurines, I like them. They're cool to look at, and each character has that signature Disney-style. I just wished it wasn't so expensive for a non-articulate statue - even if it adds some additional (but not unique) gameplay - provided you already have the Disney Infinity 2.0 set. At about $13 each for the add-on figures, the price of having an Infinity setup adds up quick: $69 for the "base" Disney Infinity 2.0 system, then $14 for each add-on figure that doesn't even add much to the gameplay other than being able to do the same (or very similar) missions using someone else. For example, if you wanted just the complete Avengers group, you would first need the Disney Infinity 2.0 Avengers starter pack (about $69), then you'd have to also buy Captain America ($13), The Hulk ($13), Hawkeye ($13), and Nick Fury ($13). That adds up to $121 for interchangeable characters in what amounts to the same, simple gameplay. (If you want the complete Guardians of the Galaxy group, you have to buy all of the Guardians PLUS you still need the Disney Infinity Starter Pack to get the Infinity Base and the game disc, otherwise your Guardians figures do nothing except sit on a shelf looking cool.) If you're a Marvel fan looking for collectable figurines that can somewhat double as stand alone toys or display pieces, spend away (like I explained above, it gets expensive). Just don't expect a great game, because it gets stale quickly. The price of the Disney system isn't worth every cent, so to speak. But if you're looking for fun, exciting, and entertaining gameplay that both adults and kids can enjoy for hours and hours, you're probably better off going with the Lego series of games. ... show more

  • 5.0 out of 5 stars Family Fun night
Platform For Display: PlayStation 4 Edition: Standard
I don't like that you can't use them on the first system but my son is happy that they came out with the super hero's on the 2.0 system. We got these for our children as a Christmas present and we have had hours of family fun playing the games and fighting together and against each other. The characters are made form the same plastic as the first one and if you step on certain ones they will break but they are pretty sturdy compared to that. We bought the carrying case and the display case to make sure they were always put up so they would not break like they did on the first system. Great buy for any family fun or game night. ... show more

  • 2.0 out of 5 stars like the Spiderman playset and the Guardians of the Galaxy ...
Platform For Display: PlayStation 4 Edition: Standard
Unlike Skylanders which gives you access to most of the game, which only cuts off branches of paths you can visit here and there for specific character types and elements, you have to buy special packs including unlocking tokens to access huge chunks of the game, like the Spiderman playset and the Guardians of the Galaxy pack. I feel like I can only access a third of the game that I paid for. Disney seems to think the toybox makes up for this, with thousands of user created worlds to check out. This may be great for some people, but for me its lackluster. after playing through the entire avengers portion of content, I didnt even have one character maxed out on abilities, and cant seem to find anything to do to get him up higher without restarting the too-short content from the beginning. Maybe Im just not the right audiance, but it makes skylanders look cheap, and you can access at least 3/4ths of it's content with the characters included in the box. ... show more
