Nice, simple tool for creating dowels. Important to get the shape of the wood relatively close so that the actual runs through this tool are easier. I quickly learned that it's better to mount this in a piece of 3/4" plywood so that I can have the business end hang out a little from my vise. It's also critical to have relatively short stock (I found 16-20" is about the longest). That makes for relatively quick passes and minimizes the breakage in the stock, especially when using older black walnut and cherry like I just did. Love that it's made in the USA too. ... show more

I bought this tool based on other reviews. Tried it out for the first time today. It works as advertised. Excellent quality. Use straight grain wood as the instructions recommend. I made a 1/2" dowel, a 3/8" dowel and a 1/4" dowel from a length of cherry wood. They turned out great. I checked the accuracy of the dowels to see if they were true 1/2", 3/8", etc. with my calipers and they were what they call dead nuts on. If you have been thinking of buying a dowel plate this is the one. ... show more

Only 4 stars because I have not fully used it yet, just made a few test dowels to test functionality and it worked as advertised. This not only has a competitive price (looking at you lie nieslen) but also more options. I'll need to make a jig/holder for this and look forward to it's use. Previously I was buying dowels and found them to be inconsistent in size (yes I know wood shrinks and expands). But you're also limited to the material of store bought dowels. This allows me to make mine from my wood of choice. I've provided some images of some coaster bases (maple) with "hardwood" store bought dowels. I like to make these as gifts and am looking forward to making some dowels of walnut or something darker for contrast to better match the coasters themselves. This is the third dowel cutter I ordered and the other 2 was the cheap red ones and trust me you are wasting your time and money buying one...but this one is and exception to the rule...I needed 3/8ths dowel rods and i wanted them to match the wood i was using for picture frames. ...putting a dowel on the corners to add strength to the miter joint...I cut the wood to 1/2 inch square and starter with the 1/2 hole to knock the corners off then just came down to the next hole till I got to 3/8 and it made a perfect 3/8 dowel...now it says you can drive it with a mallet but I used a deep well socket to run it into the holes using a drill...works great...if you are looking for a dowel cutter..this one works great...and I do recommend it.. ... show more

I got this mostly as a curiosity. I got some plug cutters to make plugs, and thought I'd get this as well to see how it worked. It's thicker steel than I realized. Heavy duty bit of kit. I clamped it in a vise, I didn't mount it with screws. It works! Turns out a nice dowel. Many more sizes than the plug cutter set, so that's good. It's a bit slower, so that's a tradeoff. This thing is exactly as described, but it is not a very good dowel maker. You are literally tring to pound a square peg through a round hole. I have had limited success with it. I have made dowels with it, So I guess you could say it works, but there are better methods out there. It does work well for determining the size of loose drill bits that have gotten misplaced in my tool box, so not all is lost. ... show more
