Description

This new design offers woodworkers and makers the first commercial dowel plate with 1/32" (0.031") increments between hole sizes to make the process easier than traditional plates with 1/8" or 1/16" holes. This is especially helpful in hardwoods. The holes are counterbored which means the hole bottom diameter is larger to reduce friction on the dowel as it passes through each hole.

  • It's a lifetime tool so don't go cheap
Size: English 17 Holes
Since I received this dowel cutter I have been hammering out douglas fir pegs for a mortise and tenon railing. Thankfully I have some nice, tight grain old wood. Works great and is quite satisfying. IMO it is well worth the extra cost. The plate is extremely well made.

  • It does work
Size: English 17 Holes
This is the first time I have used a dowel plate. I restore/ repair furniture for a company and I frequently need to replace dowels. Before, I was carving them by hand and that takes a lot of time. Now I can use this and it does work but the dowels are not clean looking dowels. In fact they are very crude looking. But hey, once it's all glued up you will not see it anyway. ... show more

  • A Paint to Use, but the Best Way I've Found
Size: English 17 Holes
This isn't fun to use - you basically smash in square stock with a hammer to get dowels. It does work if you're using this to make joinery dowels. I wouldn't rely on this for dowels you will see though, because I couldn't get them to come out very straight

  • Master Woodworker review
Size: English 17 Holes
Quickly, this is a perfectly made tool for making dowel/peg that is used as a tree nail in woodworking. The cutting burr is extremely sharp and durable. The bottom has a larger exit hole about half way down the thickness of the steel, which provides ease of exit either by moving the exiting peg. The sides of the steel have a shoulder, which sits perfectly in the workbench vise jaws. The secret of getting a straight peg is to chop the blank with a chisel and find the straightest grain, otherwise the peg will not be straight. The benefit of having the holes in small increments is that there is a minimal pounding needed for the operation—that is, by starting from a slightly larger diameter, I can easily size the peg. I can’t find any disadvantages or defects… and for that I’d like to thank the whole team—from idea givers, to engineers, to machinists—thank you!!! Oh and the price is way too low for the quality of the workmanship being made right here in the USA! ... show more

  • Quality made product

This is a much better option to make dowels that match the species you're working with vs going out and buying dowels to match.

  • Useful, but hard to believe it's worth it.
Size: English 17 Holes
I got this for projects with my preschool grandchildren. I didn't use it the first visit, because it takes quite a while to build a frame suitable to use it with. I made mine out of tight-grained white oak, as it will need to stand up to abuse. I initially made it hollow, but I found that driving the sticks through the die holes was harder than I thought, mainly because it was difficult to keep them perfectly vertical while hammering them with a mallet (by the way, you cannot use a metal hammer, as the plate is so hard it's brittle). When they bend from side to side, it makes the dowels oval shaped and warped. I solved this by adding a 1" thick board under the plate that is exactly lined up with the holes on the plate. Each hole is beveled at the top and is just about 1/32nd of an inch larger than the hole in the plate above it. Now the dowels are held straight once they are through the plate. This is an absolute pain in the neck to make, as you can imagine. The high cost of the plate and the time required to make it the way I did means I can basically never break even on this thing. But my grandsons will have a blast beating on it and if I ever need a dowel in some rare dimension, I will be able to make it for almost nothing. ... show more

  • Good dowel plate with conditions
Size: English 17 Holes
This is a good dowel plate, but it requires a couple different actions in order to work well: 1. Stock preparation is key. If you're after the larger sizes in the plate, you'll need your blank to be much more closely sized. If on the other hand you're after a mid-sized dowel or smaller in the plate, you can get away with simply cutting square stock that fits in the larger holes and stepping it down 6 or so times, works great. 2. A stable base / platform. I built a platform out of a solid piece of 6 inch thick pine scrap I had lying around and chiseled out a mortise for the plate to sit flush, and also chiseled out a complete through mortise below the holes of the plate. If you happen to have a proper woodworkers bench with bench holes, you can simply place it over those assuming you have the plate secured. 3. For me, holding the dowels with one hand while I smack them with the other substantially improved the straightness. Went from 30% quality to 85%+ simply by making this change in my technique. Would buy again. ... show more
