This works great. Recommend making a simple stand to hold in place. Start several spots bigger than you need and work your way down to the size you need.

I needed some 1/2” dowels but wanted them made with treated wood. I cut short pieces out of a treated 2x4 that were approximately 3/4” by 3/4” square -a square dowel. I used a draw knife to round it off enough to be driven with a rubber mallet through the 5/8” hole in the cutter then working down using the smaller holes until I could do the last cut using the 1/2 “ hole. I was considering buying a cheaper version of this tool but this tool seems to be of high quality. I believe it is worth the extra money. Made in USA.

I bought this doweling tool when other methods of making dowels failed. Deep plug cutters dulled very quickly. I use this for making hard wood dowels of the same species as my main project. The key to making quality dowels is getting the wood stock centered in your drill bit. If it's off, there's a lot of travel and vibration, causing uneven cuts and an inconsistent size in your dowels. I start cutting with the larger diameters and work my way down to one size just larger than I need. Then I finish the dowels, still using the drill to sand down to the exact diameter i need. If you're using the dowels for joinery, you can just cut down to the actual size you need. The tool is keeping the original sharpness and I've no issues with dullness anywhere. To be honest, I haven't tried the smallest dowel sizes yet. Everything I've done is 1/2 inch and larger. But I don't see how they would be different other than really needing to center your stock to start to prevent breakage. Like most things, it takes a little practice to get the results you're looking for, but I'll be using this method to create my dowels in the future.

I got this for projects with my preschool grandchildren. I didn't use it the first visit, because it takes quite a while to build a frame suitable to use it with. I made mine out of tight-grained white oak, as it will need to stand up to abuse. I initially made it hollow, but I found that driving the sticks through the die holes was harder than I thought, mainly because it was difficult to keep them perfectly vertical while hammering them with a mallet (by the way, you cannot use a metal hammer, as the plate is so hard it's brittle). When they bend from side to side, it makes the dowels oval shaped and warped. I solved this by adding a 1" thick board under the plate that is exactly lined up with the holes on the plate. Each hole is beveled at the top and is just about 1/32nd of an inch larger than the hole in the plate above it. Now the dowels are held straight once they are through the plate. This is an absolute pain in the neck to make, as you can imagine. The high cost of the plate and the time required to make it the way I did means I can basically never break even on this thing. But my grandsons will have a blast beating on it and if I ever need a dowel in some rare dimension, I will be able to make it for almost nothing.
