  • Jury still out on this saw
I waited several years to upgrade to a sliding miter saw. I finally purchased one and stuck with DeWalt because I love the handle configuration and have used others that cut "dead on" angles. When I received it, the angles were slightly off (no big deal) because it is adjustable. My old Delta 10" chop saw could not be accurately adjusted. I had to get a "star" drive to loosen the guide so I ordered one. These screws were locked in so hard in the aluminum that it was a bit difficult to break them free. I was able to do it however with the drive placed in a power drill. the adjustment went quite well. Next, the Dewalt blade is junk - OK for construction, but not furniture making. I purchased a diablo blade and went to install it. I'm not complaining as I expected to have to do this. The problem was that when I went to change the blade, I (again) needed the star drive to loosen the blade guard assembly in two places so that I could rotate it up to get at the blade nut. Again, I used a power drill with the driver and guess what? The star drive stripped out the screws. I DID have it well seated in the screw, but it was stuck so badly it simply tore out the center of the screw. I then went into back up mode. I have a brand new Klien flat blade screw driver which perfectly fit the flat blade slot in the screw. The screw driver has a square shank, so I carefully seated the screw driver and used a crescent wrench to attempt to break the screw free. It also stripped out. Next I got a small channel lock pliers and (thankfully) was able to get a bite on the outside of the screw head. I was finally able to break the screw free. I found an abundance of lock-tite on the screw threads. For me this is unacceptable for a brand new saw. I certainly hope that they send me new screws and also hope this type of thing does not continue with this saw. One other thing. When I unpacked the saw and initially set it up, I went through the manual (I really do not like this manual - it is not at all organized, has liability statement after liability statement, and no specific organization to "set up", "operation", "maintenance", etc. and there is no parts list for the saw.) Now that I have a wrecked part I cannot even identify a part number. When I did finally get to the point of pulling the trigger for the first time, I expected to hear the saw for the first time, but rather, I heard a very nasty electrical noise, got some smoke out of the motor, and it stopped. DANG. I am a qualified electrician, so I checked this out. One of the two brush holder springs had slipped off of the back of the brush so it was floating on the armature causing excessive arcing and loss of connection of power to the motor. I had to clean up the armature before being able to use the saw. The repair was not too bad, but annoying. Once this was done and the brush spring properly installed on the brush, it worked ok. It had a little extra arcing for the first 10 minute run in, but seems ok now. DJ ... show more

  • Decent SCMS
I am a finish carpenter & bought mine in 2006 along w/ the 723 stand. It has served it's purpose tirelessly since then. I have used many of these saws over the years & I think the quality does vary considerably. I must've been lucky w/ mine which is a type 1. Over all has been fairly true & reliable. It does have it's issues now most likely due to being in & out of a truck twice a day for going on 7 yrs now. So I will try to stick to original drawbacks when reviewing. As far as the downsides I would mention the dust port it does very little in that aspect. Also for extreme bevel you have to completely remove the upper fences & the dust port will contact the lower fence. Also have noticed on several 718's that the table dips in where the saw is, so cuts can vary from side to side when not spanning the entire table. w/ crown especially this is not unforgivable but offensive non-the-less. It's great for it's cutting capacity, & the time you save cutting larger materials without having to constantly keep reaching behind your saw to change a bevel makes it worth a look. I have replaced the power cord & bearings once & also added the dws7085 which has been a nice addition to the saw. I haven't decided when I replace this one if I will rebuy the 718 or go with the 780. ... show more

  • I like this saw
This is a good saw which will be a companion to my Dewalt 12 inch 708 miter saw which still looks and runs like new. I wanted the larger capacity of the 12 inch slider so got this saw. Dewalt always has great tools for the buck as far as I am conderned. As everybody who reviews this saw the dust pick-up is non-existant and don't know why they even bothered to stick something that doesn't work on there. Too bad as I would have given this saw 5 stars otherwise. It is much quieter than my DW708 and maybe all belt driven sliders sound that way. I love the LED work light that I added which really makes no need for a lazer. The LED lights up the exact work area where you are going to make your cut plus shows a perfect shadow of what material the blade will remove when you make your cut. I highly recommend this LED light on your Dewalt miter saw. I also added a 12inch Freud Diablo 80T blade before even making the first cut. Not sure this is the best miter saw blade but we will see if I buy another when this one needs replacing. Still can't get use to the sound of this saw though. ... show more

  • Great Saw
I love my new saw!! The fence adjustment is easy. I love the pre-set miter angle detents. The detents were a little off when I bought the saw but were very easy to adjust to get true zero. The saw does not lack anything in the area of horse power. I have not found a piece of wood that it could not handle with ease. If I had one complaint it would be the dust collection system. The shoot just behind the blade is small and got clogged within 2 cuts and there was no cuttings in the collection bag. I think that if you need to keep dust down you would need to hook a vacuum to the shoot exit and just toss the bag. The DWX726 rolling miter saw stand is a great addition to the saw. It makes for very easy transport. I also purchased the laser system for the saw but never use it because it is extremely hard to adjust and keep true. I do wish they would offer an XPS LED light system for this saw but no luck there. All in all a great buy!! ... show more

  • Great price for Great Saw
I received this saw quickly from Amazon after seeing a lower price than anywhere else by far. I asked My 2 brothers for their recommendation( they are life long in the Mill work Business)and they both said the dewalt was well worth the price at $500. I paid $399 with free shipping. I took the saw out of the box and noticed that during shipping the lock down had come loose and the saw obviously had moved in shipping. At 50+ lbs this is not unusual. I had some damage to the kerf guard and after a short email to Dewalt I received a new set in 10 days. I purchased this saw to do alot of crown molding and to help with deck and patio building. So far the cuts are easy, the saw is quiet, and I see no obvious drawbacks. I will give a more detailed review when I finish some heavy cutting. Mike ... show more
