  • Useing for ice fishing
Style: Drill/driver bare tool
The media could not be loaded. I run this on an ice auger designed to work with a cordless drill. A system which uses a drill plate (Clam plate) connected to an 8" ice auger (K-Drill). I've already burned thru a 20 volt drill with brushes and have now used this brushless 20v going on two seasons. Plenty of power. Everything I need. Highly recommend for this application. ... show more

  • Love it a little... and hate it a lot.
Style: Drill/driver bare tool
I bought the 990 when the clutch on my DC790 finally failed. Used the hell out of that thing and loved it. 5 stars all the way. I was hoping to have the same experience with the 990. When I opened the new drill, I loved the feel of it, the balance of it and the power it delivered. However, being used to the mechanical clutch on my 790, I was sure the drill had a defective clutch. I returned it for a replacement, got the second drill and had the same experience. After a little more research on a bunch of forums, I learned that the e-clutch is very different than the mechanical. It's been a couple months trying to get used to the e-clutch on this thing and it's not as reliable and predictable as the mechanical clutch on my 790. With the mechanical clutch on the 790, I could select a clutch setting and reliably and repeatedly sink screws just flush into solid woods, plywood, even drywall. That's why I loved that thing so much. With the 990's e-cluth, there's no predictability and no reliability. On a low clutch setting, the drill wouldn't even start if I put resistance on the chuck, but on the same setting without resistance at the start, it would drive the screw into the wood right through the point of stripping the wood and spinning the screw. I hate the e-clutch on this thing and have given up trying to use the 990 with anything other than a drill bit. Please DeWalt, go back to the drawing board on your clutch! The other pain the backside with this drill is the rapid brake on releasing the trigger. The drill brakes so fast, the chuck loosens just a bit with each stop. After 15 or so starts and stops, the bit falls out. You've taken three steps back with the e-clutch, another two with dropping bits all the time. What gives??? ... show more

  • So much torque and power!
Style: Drill/driver bare tool
I should've bought this sooner. My old non-brushless drill I bought five years or so ago works fine but the power has been noticeably weaker likely due to the batteries. Ever since I started purchasing Dewalt's brushless drill I've been in love with them especially the amount of torque and overall power it has not to mention the battery that seem to last a long time. For woodworking I use this for drilling and was shocked how much power it has using the Kreg pocket hole system. Often times, for simple projects, I just use pocket hole to build simple but strong joints (with wood glue too of course) for rough framing of things around the house. My old Dewalt drill was struggling at times especially if there was a knot or especially drilling into hardwood. There's is so much power with this thing it drilled through 2x4 like butter. While I'll keep the other drill, I haven't touched it since getting this drill. I may end up using this Max drill for pocket hole system and the old drill for regular drilling. The ergonomics of these newer brushless drill is also worth the price. The LED is always nice when the area gets dark and helps that it stays on for a little while after I'm done drilling. I don't know how many times these newer drills with LED's that stay on came in handy instead of trying to grab a flashlight or use my phone as one. Overall it's one of the best drills out there. This combined with the brushless impact driver makes it a perfect combo for woodworking. I don't work for Dewalt or getting any sort of free products. In fact certain things I do use Bosch and other brand for personal reasons that Dewalt doesn't always shine but overall I'm loving their product so far. ... show more

  • Great for industrial but too heavy & cumbersome for home use.
Style: Drill/driver bare tool
Super torque & built like a tank. I use it all day drilling holes in stainless steel from an 1/8 to 1/4 inch with drill bits, step bits & countersink tools. The 3rd speed gear on it is fantastic for wire brush wheels & scotchbrite tools for cleaning welds & finishing surfaces. I bought this originally three years ago & just replaced it with another one this week. The original one still works but after being dropped off ladders onto concrete multiple times the chuck is getting a little wobbly. It’s Pretty heavy for a cordless & probably not the best option for around the house but fantastic for industrial purposes. Beware the extreme torque with 5 ah batteries. ... show more

  • Mighty Mite!
Style: Drill/driver bare tool
Delightfully surprised by how much power it delivers for such a compact size. It's just a little longer than my 708 Atomic, still under 7 inches, and easily twice as powerful. And not a whole lot heavier. Both feel like half the weight of the bigger DeWalt 20V "brush-hogs" I've been using all this time. It's noisy with a little bang and clatter that I'm not used to with my other DeWalts, but not in a cheap-quality way. It's just from all the torque and superb gearing in this thing - everything jumps to when you hit the trigger, like firing a big-bore handgun. Its 1st day outta the box I used it to take apart an outdoor work bench; about 3 dozen 2 1/2 and 3 1/2 inch deck screws anchored for 15 years. Drilled performed flalwessly and moreso since then as well. Very bright work light when needed, after-market batteries readily available , 1/2 inch chuck, 3 speeds, excellent grip and handle, brushless, and I already said tons of torque. What's not to like? Maybe no bit-holder, but I found a 4-pk for about $6 here at AMZ. Love this drill - my big-butt 5lb DeWalts may feel neglected for a while. As a 3-decade user of Dewalt cordless drills, I hardily endorse the 991B. ... show more
