  • You get what you pay for
Style: Saw
Yeah this is a lot for a jigsaw. I get it. I cringed as I hit the buy button. But I have to say, this saw has already improved the quality of my woodworking. I build furniture, so I can't speak to using it on a job site or for coping, but for my needs, it works great. This is my first barrel grip saw and I will never go back. The lower center of gravity and the ergonomics of the grip make this very easy to use accurately. The dust blower and the light keep the cut lines clearly visible. With a scroll blade, I do find myself reaching for this in some situations that I would normally take to the bandsaw. Maybe I have just had bad experiences with other products, but the orbital settings have distinct effects at each setting and setting the orbital setting on the max makes quick, but rough work, when appropriate. The saw has PLENTY of power and the speed settings, while in a bit of an awkward place to use on the fly, dramatically improves the flexibility of cuts the saw accomplishes. It does take a bit of use to become accustomed to the power switch. I am used to just releasing a trigger to stop the saw. But I got used to it very quickly. And not having to engage a trigger lock more than outweighs the inconvenience of using the feature. If you are on the fence, just get it. If you are just shopping, it might be worth saving up a few extra pennies to get this tool. UPDATE June 2024: A friend gave me a few Festool blades. The Festool blades are a game changer. COMPLETELY transform this already great tool into a favorite in the shop that I look forward to using. ... show more

  • Awesome Barrel handle jig saw
Style: Saw
I make a living doing home improvement work. A barrel handle is the best design and this jig saw is amazing. Cuts fast, and the adjustable speed, 4 oscillating cutting options, and the ability to control the tool is awesome. Sans, the on off switch that is hard to feel for, they need to raise the top of the switch. I have made cuts on old nominal real 1 inch oak boards that most would think were done by a table saw. BUY HIGH QUALITY BLADES/BITS FOR ANY CUTTING TOOL!!!. I only use XR tools now. Gone are the 3 chargers and the pile of 3 different types of batteries ... show more

  • Great
Style: Saw
This is a great tool! I never considered a jig saw to be a 'woodworking' tool before. But, this one is. My wife got it for me for Christmas and on its first use in the shop I fell in love with it. I never took it off the slowest speed. At that speed it feels like a solid well crafted hand saw. The grip position is far superior to a standard grip. The lower and longitudinal hand position allows for very fine control. Well done Dewalt. ... show more

  • Upgrade from your cheap saw right now!
Style: Saw
If you are reading it this, you are probably teetering on the edge of buying it. Two words, DO IT! I work as a handyman. I do everything from plumbing to framing to electrical and I find myself on occasion needing a jigsaw. I found myself just like you going from comment to comment to comment trying to decide whether or not I should get this jigsaw. I finally pulled the trigger it arrived. Today I took it out on a job where I needed it. I promise you, if you are using a Black and Decker, the first time you use this saw, you won't be able to help the smile growing across your face. If you compare this up against all the big names that are currently selling jigsaws, you will just be splitting hairs. They all cut very well. I am a DeWalt guy and all my tools are 20 volt Max DeWalt and it wouldn't make sense for me to get anything else. If you are a DeWalt guy, get this jigsaw. You will not be disappointed it is a beast, it is accurate, and it is a pleasure to use. ... show more

  • Absolutely impressive tool
Style: Saw
At times I have almost given up on finding a cordless jigsaw that could compete with my 10 yr old Bosch 1590. While DeWalt’s first crack at a 20v jigsaw was okay if you were cutting lattice or finishing the cuts on a rafter or stair stringer, when it came to coping crown, anything that wasn’t straight, and everything thing in my wood shop here came the Bosch and extension chord. I even went so far as picking up the DeWalt power station (DCB1800) so I could have a quasi cordless experience. I had heard good things about this barrel jigsaw and figured it couldn’t hurt. Well, for the first time in years the Bosch case has dust on only one side where it has been sitting with my other tools that have been relegated to purgatory after replacements have been found. This saw has amazing power, yet always remains well under your control. On hard woods, the cut is clean and while some relief cuts may be required for tight turns it feels like my chorded Bosch. Put a Collins coping jig on it and u can make beautiful i/s corners on your molding. I don’t know why I have stated away from barrel type jig saws. This saw really feels like an extension of your arm whether you are pulling the saw towards you inverted or using more traditionally right side up and being guided away from you. I have noticed I like using this saw more when it has a larger 5 ah or 6 ah battery because while it is heavier the tool is more balanced. Despite the power of this tool, it doesn’t kill the batteries - in fact I typically cannot remember how long it has been since I switched batteries. ... show more

  • They couldn't have included a $5 plastic case?
Style: Saw
So far so good, very well made saw. Best for those with very large hands, the start button is poorly located. Unlike a conventional jig saw, the saw is actuated by a button requiring a thumb press. Definitely not advisable for left handed people. Poorly packaged from the factory, looks like a return, my impression is there are some very lackadaisical workers at the factory packing these things. Very disappointed they didn't include a proper, fitted plastic case, like just about every other power tool made in the last 50 years. ... show more

  • Ergonomics will define this choice for you. A+ if you like the grip. Ergonomics will define this choice for you. A+ if you like the grip.
Style: Saw
I love the barrel grip style, and will never go back, but I can say without a doubt that some people will hate it. It will be tricky for those with small hands or a grip strength that is lacking if your hand is more open due to your hand size. I have above average adult man hands, but not huge, and it fits perfectly. The power button is within a perfect distance to my thumb. If you have a smaller hand, and need to drop your hand back further down the handle, since it tapers, you will need the second hand to turn off the power. The weight balances out ok with a 5Ah battery, but anything smaller will lead to a noticeably front heavy weight ratio. For me, the overall grip and weight is superior than the D-handle for vertical cuts and small piece cuts. I prefer having my hand closer to the workpiece, and being able to see easier. It clears the dust well and provides good visibility. I never liked having to lean over the D-handle style to see, and I have much more responsive control with the barrel grip. Blade change is quick and effortless, but most modern jigsaws are. The cut quality - with the right blade, which is key - is excellent. There is a drastic difference in the orbital settings, which is good. Almost glass smooth crosscuts on the lowest setting with the right blade, but slower. Very fast cuts when you crank it up, but they naturally become rough. Having this flexibility is key. This is the perfect jigsaw for me, but it all comes down to ergonomics. I hate to say it, but getting your hands on it to test the fit is arguably the most important decision. It has a strong motor, but battery consumption is pretty high. If you need longer battery life you need a larger battery or a corded version. I find the 5AH a sweet spot, but have at least two on hand if you need to make a lot of cuts. ... show more

  • Great Saw
Style: Saw
I’ve only had it for two days and used it twice on a job (outside of several test cuts) but all I can say is this thing is NICE! Well built, solid, heavy and accurate. Great power and maneuverability. I got the 14 blade assortment with the Dewalt box and it’s a good selection. It’s a beast but controllable and comfortable. Love the blade changes, light, dust blower and overall performance. Time will tell but so far the best Jig Saw I’ve used since my corded Bosch precision Jig Saw went missing at a job site. This thing cuts very straight, no wandering or tilting of the cut. I would highly recommend. ... show more
