  • A July 2016 Review
CPU: Intel Core i7 Capacity: 8 GB RAM / 256 GB SSD Style: Laptop Only
UPDATE - August 26, 2017 - I still use this laptop almost every day, though these days I'm running Ubuntu on it full-time (not dual boot). This is, hands down, the best laptop I've ever owned and one of the best purchases I've ever made. If my XPS 9350 died today, I'd consider it money well spent (I've used it 8+ hours a day, literally every single day, for over a year) and I might even consider buying another of the same model because I still feel that it is powerful enough to do everything I need it to do. (end update, read on for original review) A little background: I am a web developer who has been on a laptop for 8 hours a day for the past 10+ years. I used to go for bulky Lenovo laptops for their power, but now that smaller/more-portable ultrabooks are catching up spec-wise, I decided to give one a shot. This is hands-down the best laptop I've ever used. I went for the i7 model with 8gb RAM, 256gb SSD & 4k touch display. I got this laptop almost a year after it came out, in July 2016. I won't go too in-depth with my review, but I'll touch on the basics. Speed/power - I run Photoshop CC, PHPStorm/IntelliJ/Android Studio, and other high-CPU-cost programs without issue. I specifically chose this model for the powerful i7 and am very glad I did. I was a little concerned about the 8gb memory (16gb was over $500 more than I paid) but it's holding up well! I have not encountered a single issue, where I wished I had a more powerful laptop. Screen - the display is GORGEOUS but be prepared to struggle a bit with some older & lower-quality apps that haven't gotten on board with high DPI displays yet. For example, I had to upgrade from Photoshop CS6 to CC because the high DPI functionality in CS6 was non-existent. But CC runs flawlessly. There are often tweaks to get things running acceptably for these older apps, but they do end up looking pixelated. Keyboard & Touchpad - the keyboard and touchpad are both extremely nice. They feel great to use, and are very accurate. Coming from Lenovo laptops, where touchpads were always pretty dismal, it is a breath of fresh air to be able to use advanced gestures like two-finger scrolling and pinch-zooming. My only issue with the keyboard is that because of the laptop's small size, some keys are condensed into others-- for example Home/End are on the Left/Right arrows and need to be used with the Fn (function) key. Not a huge deal, but it can be a bit annoying. Size - this thing is TINY! It's lovely! But the screen is deceptively large for how small the chassis is. I am 6'1" and nearly 200lbs (I'm a big guy) and I can picture this laptop being perfectly sized for anyone, from a kid to a person even bigger than I. There is almost no bezel either, which is very premium-feeling. General Aesthetics - everything on this laptop feels very high quality. From the aluminum (I think?) chassis to the carbon fiber palm rests, this thing screams luxury. If you're going to be using this for 8 hours a day like I am, the luxurious feel goes a very long way. It feels so nice. General Thoughts - I almost want to buy another one of this same laptop, just to put it under my bed for when I need another laptop. I am so in love with my XPS13, that as long as Dell doesn't completely ruin the line in the future, I'll probably always come back for more. TIPS FOR SETTING UP - This laptop is almost a year old now, so setting it up is not as straight-forward as newer laptops. I recommend doing the following: 1. Turn on the laptop and get Windows set up generally 2. Run Windows update and reboot once they install. Once rebooted, keep trying to update windows until you get a "your system is up to date" message after a fresh reboot. This means Windows is good to go. 3. Go on Dell.com and enter your service tag on the Support/Drivers page to find the latest drivers for your laptop. Install all the drivers found, STARTING with the BIOS update and any firmware updates. Once you do those 3 things, you'll be all set and ready to go with your beautiful new ultrabook. I hope this helps someone, somewhere, sometime! ... show more

  • design flaw that makes buzzing hissing sound
CPU: Intel Core i7 Capacity: 16 GB RAM / 512 GB SSD Style: Laptop Only
laptop is fast and light as advertised. I was able to get on line, work on spreadsheets, and even do a little light gaming. Battery life was pretty good as well even though I got the higher res model. However there was an audible buzz coming from the lower left corner of the keyboard. it sounds like a hard drive working even though the model has a SSD. It's very distracting in a quiet environment. I looked it up and it's a known issue with the dell XPS line but there is no single official cause from Dell, and there is no solution that i could find that worked. I contacted dell support and they suggested I replace the sound card. I have an 5 year old dell xps 14Z that i still used and it is whisper quiet when idle. I've contacted amazon to get a replacement unit. Will update this review once the new unit comes UPDATE: Received the replacement unit and has the same issue. Contacted Dell support and was told the buzzing sound was "normal" debating if I should go Razer stealth or MacBook. Laptop is still fast and light as before but the whine is really annoying when in a quiet room. UPDATE 2: Dell support followed up with me and offered to replace the laptop. However their replacement policy only covers 30 days from invoice. any other problems would be fixed by spare parts or refurbished units, so I've decided to return to amazon for one more replacement. Lets hope this one isn't a dud like the first 2. Final Update Three strikes and your out. The latest unit also had the same issue, buzzing sound. Laptop also looked dirty with a few small smudges on the cover. I would not recommend this product to anyone. Maybe the i5 or the 256gb ssd or the 8gb ram versions are better but the i7 model with 512gb and 16gb ram is a dud. For the top end price for this load out I am very very disappointing with the product. Dell please fix this. ... show more

  • Good laptop!
CPU: Intel Core i7 Capacity: 8 GB RAM / 256 GB SSD Style: Laptop Only
Old guy review here. I'm 47 and run my own business. Basically do all my computer work on a desktop. I reviewed many laptops. Both my kids have macbooks. I live in a PC world though. I bought the XPS 13 inch with the i7 processor. Works great right out of the box. Setup couldn't have been easier. Wifi hooked up perfectly. I read a few negative reviews on this machine and either they fixed all the problems or those people got lemons. I have two small complaints: 1. The wifi will drop out occasionally but so does my ipad; 2. the hard case is too hard. It fits great but bulks up the machine and its a little slippy (if that's a word). My sons mac has a case by Kuzy that is very good. I am not using the case. Just get a good sleeve and don't drop the computer. Very well built. You can pick it up from any corner. You will need the Dell dongle. There is no Ethernet plug on the computer. I don't use the camera very much so it is fine by me. Very slim and easy to pack. Nice job Dell. Very happy. The morning after I wrote the review the wifi went down. However, I think it was an auto Windows update. All I had to do was go into "troubleshoot" disable the driver and it resolved. Then I updated the driver. Hoping that fixed the problem. I also wanted to add that I read several not so good reviews of the keyboard and track pad. Not a lot of experience to draw on here other than the kids macs and the wife's HP. THE dell is not as good as the Mac but better than the hp. I have big hands and can type pretty good on the dell. There is good flat space to put your wrists. Touch screen is also good and the screen res is great. Good keyboard and trackpad. ... show more
