I spent weeks evaluating options for a laptop that would meet my somewhat demanding performance needs, as well as not break the bank in the process. So far I am VERY satisfied that this was the right choice for me. Because everyone has a unique usage profile, I am starting my review with a bit of perspective on what was important to my buying decision. Hopefully, this will help you determine if this review is relevant to you. How I intend to use this laptop -- - I am primarily using this to run photo and video editing software (Lr, Ps, Sony Vegas, etc) so raw processing and decent GPU performance is a prerequisite - I also use music editing software (FL Studio, Audacity) which can also be quite processor-dependent - Above apps are primarily run on my desktop, which is an i7 w/16GB and GPU. My laptop is used each day while I commute on the train to/from the office, and while away from home - 4k display would be a nice-to-have, but I believe the screen size would not lend itself to editing raw 4k footage. I'll wait a few years for a comparable 4k display option Why I chose this option -- - Granted, this unit packs the 6th generation i7, not the 7th. I'm OK with that. The incremental performance gain didn't seem to warrant the $100+ in cost - The GPU, while good, is not the Nvidia 10-series. That is also OK. I did not purchase this laptop to run games in 1920x1080. As a matter of fact, I am not going to run games at all. This is the conundrum for me as a power user of multimedia apps. Everything today is spec'd out for game play, which doesn't necessarily translate to performance with Photoshop or music / DAW applications. I decided to err on the side of value here. In reality, the GTX 960M w/4GB is quite capable, and will support tasks such as video rendering and playback. - The IPS HD display is gorgeous. It's anti-glare surface is bright, crisp and reproduces colors quite nicely. - Most importantly, I chose value. I could have spent MUCH more than $799 and realized very little in performance gain. Let the others clamor for the bleeding edge. I'm inclined to find that ideal spot between performance and cost. My impression is after a few weeks of use -- - (very good) Performance is great with video and image rendering / process times considerably better than my i7-2600 3.40 GHz desktop w/16GB - (great) IPS display is really nice even in bright ambient lighting - (great) Build quality and feel of casing is well done. I was able to easily upgrade Crucial 8GB Single DDR3L 1600 MT/s (PC3L-12800) SODIMM 204-Pin Laptop Memory (CT102464BF160B) to 16GB with one screw and a few panel snaps - (great) It's quiet.. I rarely hear the fan kick up - (good) Sound quality is decent, but then I primarily use quality headphones or external USB3 instrument interface - (OK) Touchpad is a bit sensitive at times, and needs a bit of getting used to Overall, I give this laptop high marks for the application I am using it for. Again, I am not a gamer, but am willing to let my little guy give it a whirl with Overwatch (assuming he can pry it from my hands). This is a nice solution for an affordable multimedia machine. UPDATE: Search out "Fstoppers a depressing comparison between new kaby lake MacBook Pro and Four other windows laptops" - in this article (published June '17), they compare the new MacBook and Surface Book, HP Zbook, Dell XPS 15, and the older Dell Inspiron 15 (this one). Not surprisingly, this inexpensive option held it's own VERY well vs. laptops costing 3X the price. This is especially true testing video rendering times head-to-head. I highly recommend reading this if you are on the bubble in terms of deciding one of these other options.

I got the i7 version, 1080p screen, with the hybrid hard drive on Prime Day. So far this things is a beauty! There are, however, some things other prospective buyers should take note of: -As soon as you get it set up, UPDATE THE BIOS IMMEDIATELY. The issues that several other people have been having with popping speakers are in part resolved by updating the BIOS to version 1.1.8. -Install the latest "High Definition Audio Codec (Software)" revision of RealTek driver software. After doing this my problems with popping audio have basically vanished. I'll report more on this if there are later issues. -The Nvidia 960M isn't automatically activated out of the box so far as I can tell when it comes to gaming. In order to do so look up NVIDIA Control Panel in your search bar. From there you can set the dedicated GPU to be the preferred graphics solution on your programs. After some testing I'd recommend keeping the iGPU as the global solution for graphics, and setting your games and other software to use the 960M from the control panel. As an additional note, I bought a bluetooth mouse with this. I noticed that attempting two simultaneous large file transfers from separate sources caused the on screen pointer to become jerky and laggy. Once the transfers were complete I've had zero trouble with the mouse. I'm thinking that once I upgrade the RAM I'll have less issues with this: will update later. A little work to get it all polished up right, but once you've done that it shines! Dell did a number on making this a budget workstation/gaming desktop replacement! I've been stuck with a Latitude E6510 from my early college days that was hot, heavy, and a disaster for anything beyond basic tasks. This pint size powerhouse has helped me fall in love with laptop use again, and know that there are budget gaming options available! ***UPDATE 12/27/2016 In the past few months I've added an additional 8 GB stick of RAM to make 16 total for the system, specifically a stick of Crucial SODIMM laptop RAM. I haven't run into the lag spikes for the mouse when running file transfers since then, but I can't say with certainty that the RAM was the true fix for it. Also, I've installed a Crucial MX300 series M.2 SSD. This has decreased my average boot time to a phenomenal 7-9 seconds from BIOS screen to Windows login. I've just recently noticed that some people are still having trouble with popping audio, and after looking on the Dell forums another user provided a solution, but it requires editing the registry. If you are uncomfortable tampering with the Windows registry, stop reading now, as changing the wrong values or categories can have a serious effect on your installation of Windows which I would not be responsible for. First pull up the Run Prompt by pressing the Windows and 'R' keys simultaneously. Type 'regedit' into the box for text and press 'OK'. The value we're looking to change is under this section: HKEY_CURRENT_USER -> SOFTWARE -> REALTEK -> AUDIO -> RtkNGUI64 -> PowerMgnt Under 'PowerMgnt' you'll find a value labeled 'Enabled' which by default is set to a value of '1'. Right-click it to 'Modify', change the Value Data value to '0', press 'OK' and close out of the registry. The issue seems to have been caused by aggressive power management of the speakers and subwoofer, so anytime a person would have something that would use audio, even notifications from the OS, the speakers would turn back on with an ugly popping sound. Changing the registry value to '0' ensures this never happens by keeping the speakers always on and ready to transmit audio. I expect there is some impact on battery life, but I'll take it over the popping irritating me to no end. There's something else that also irritated me about this laptop initially, which were the extra partitions I didn't need after installing my M.2 SSD. I won't outline instructions in detail here because this is more complex than most users would care to deal with on their own, but I'm too cheap to have someone else do it for me, and I like to live dangerously. If you haven't already, backup all your personal files to an external hard drive from the onboard 2.5" HDD and wipe everything everything onboard, even the recovery partition and the MBR partition. If you have programs that require Product Keys be sure to have those saved or written down somewhere just in case; MagicJellyBean KeyFinder is good for getting easy to find ones off your setup, but I'd look at other solutions as well. Next, install the M.2 drive in the laptop. You can try installing Windows with the 2.5" HDD still physically inside the laptop, but I've run into issues in the past with Windows gaving out an error when it detects multiple potentials drives that it can install to, especially ones it's been installed to previously. Because the HDD was wiped, there's now no recovery partition in place in your system after Windows is installed to the M.2 SSD, but by the same token there's none of the extra junk Dell so lovingly provided to the masses either like the useless Dell Assist programs and the McAfee trial. I'd suggest keeping a Windows 10 recovery USB/SD card lying around if you need to reinstall or repair your Windows installation.

Completely garbage. The computer could only work for a month like a normal computer, still suffering from a lot of lag and sometimes even froze on pages such as Youtube. Later started having to much lag even on the File Explorer, to the point where it froze on it; I had to call Dell believing it was a minor concern and they had to update everything in the computer for it to work. For a week the computer was pretty fast and just what I was expecting from its price (as I bought a brand new one when the price was 799.99). However, after this week it started to show all the problems again: mouse unresponsive, lag on File Explorer and other not so taxing webpages, the fan started going crazy even in google, Minecraft lagged a lot too, etc. Furthermore, when I try to access to the Desktop it sends me a little square on the top left corner of the screen displaying "Loading personalized settings" and that took around 1 to 2 minutes to go. Eventually I had to go to Dell's costumer service situated at the college I attend to, the lady specifically told me that said problems were not covered by my warranty because this were "Software Problems", and for a problem to really be considered to be covered under the warranty it had to be something like WiFi not working well, or the motherboard to be broken; a week later the computer started to get disconnected of the WiFi out of nowhere. Calling Dell yet again was most necessary now that not even the WiFi worked at all, and whats more, now the computer can't even open Photoshop or Illustrator. The costumer service was terrible as they told me I had to reset my computer to factory reset, and also that was pretty much it. Remember, the computer is only 2 months old. I did this and after a screen that was not supposed to appear, I had to call to Dell yet again for them to 'fix' my 2 months old computer, and they told me "THIS IS NORMAL IN A NEW COMPUTER"; since when is it normal for a computer to breakdown in 2 months? What's even more, they had to 'update' everything after the computer was completely reset (just like they did the very first time I called), but the computer is pretty much the same if not worse: the graphics are either blurry or pixelated, the WiFi disconnects by itself in no time, and fan is went crazy while downloading Google Chrome; now they are saying "The operating system is corrupted and we (you and I) have to reinstall it". I'm currently still trying make the computer work. If you really want a good computer, then consider the following about this one: * Costumer service won't help you * The computer will last around 2 months * Dell will rather say that your computer's BREAKDOWN IS NORMAL * Games are laggy * Everything that is not BROKEN TO THE NAKED is a software problem, thing that your warranty doesn't cover Believe me, save your money on this one; it's not worth the time or the money

Hello ,first of all i want to say that i was very concern about this laptop quality.I bought it from Amazon Wearhouse for 731.50$ -description was,,used-very good, less than 5% on top of he item..."but i did not found anything no scratch....it is brand new it is look like open box to me.Belive me i was looking very carefully!My reason of buing it used....this laptop first appearence date 1 nov 2015 so it could not have much wear off and i have 30 days to return it!I 'm a casual gamer and it was time for upgrade! The 960 gtx 4gb ddr5 may not be the best GPU but i'm able to play all games and it's high end! Game that i tested on this laptop PES 2016,NFS RIVALS,CRYSIS 3- all at the highest settings! no issues,no heat problems- fans (has 2 fans)just a little bit of noise doesn' t bother me at all! Temperature after 1hour of gaming -57° celsius!I love the look of this machine and it seems well built,keyboard a little flimsy on middle!I like the sound comparing to my Asus kv55vd from 2013- clear and loud it is not a sound system! Display the main concern it's true it has display bleeding !This is the reason for 4 star rating! I did a little reserch about screen bleeding it seems like most of LCD display have this issue! You will notice this only in a dark room with black wallpaper! I will not use for this purpose to stay in a dark room and look at the black wallpaper!The processor I7 6700HQ it's superb ,when i'm using multitasking never reach full load !I owend previously 2 Acer and 2 Asus no issues with Acer's and one Asus had a bad motherboard and the other Asus that i have now have some software problems!Comparing to what i used this Dell it is high quality and very well built! I plan to keep it for at least 3-5 year and i'm confident that it will do the job!It is very fast and maybe the thing that i'm planning to upgrade in the future is the hdd with SSD! But for now it's not the case!I'm happy with my purchase for 730$ i couldn't find anything close to this specs!I was looking for a laptop for over one month ,and in this price range i found only ULV processors and GPU's like 940 m ddr3 on 64 bit or maybe a skylake processor with no dedicated gpu! Update 1!I have it for one week and everything is ok!The display has good angle of visibility and for me screen bleeding is not a problem!I'm close to finish NFS Rivals temperature -CPUID HWMonitor-doesn't go higher than 57°Celsius !I like the easy acces to hdd,ram and it's look like i can clean the fans from dust(when it will be the case)myself! About touchpad it's working fine but i'm using an external mouse and for gaming i use a gamepad Logitech F310 !Keyboard as i said it's a little flimsy but for every day use it's ok ,i like the keyboard backlight!For intense gaming like FPS i also use a gaming keyboard! I had issues with intel video driver stopped and recover,i switch power plan from Dell to high performance ,so far so god!

***UPDATE 5/17/2016****** After having this for more than a month now, using it daily, with the added SSD and RAM, I am very happy. It starts lightning fast, last BIOS time was 8.0 seconds which is fantastic. Overall I think this is a great looking laptop, I really like the black with red accents, and love the rubber like texture. It does not show fingerprints for me, I've seen a review or two that complain about that, maybe greasy hands??. The keyboard is quiet, responsive, and overall just works well. The screen is plenty bright, most times I have the setting at 50% brightness and it's more than adequate. I have not used the HDMI port yet, but do plan to eventually have a dual screen setup, as of now I just don't have the space. This is the first laptop i've owned with a lighted keyboard, which I really like, and seems to work well. I have used it for a small amount of recording with Presonus Studio One 3 Artist, with an AudioBox USB interface. I can get latency down to about 6ms and that's imperceptible to most people. It handles anything I've thrown at it with ease, mostly staying at about 10-20% CPU performance. Thats running about 5-6 tracks, a few effect and VCA busses, and some direct insert effects. I guess Dell sorta markets this a gaming laptop, albeit a cheaper one, but a lot of the gaming laptops i've looked at compare quite closely to this, usually have 16gb ram already installed, and a higher end graphics card etc, while some don't even have as good a processor, and sometimes have an i5 instead. A similar MSI will cost a least a few hundred dollars more. I think this is a powerhouse computer in sheep's clothing,and a fantastic value, just MHO. If you're in the market for a solid laptop with an awesome feature set and processor, this is definitely worth considering. *************************************************************************************************************************************************** I purchased this less than a month ago, not from amazon, but wanted to leave a review here anyway. I have the i7559-2512BLK 15.6 Inch FHD Laptop (6th Generation Intel Core i7, 8 GB RAM, 1 TB HDD + 8 GB SSD) NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M. I wanted the best processor I could afford in a new machine. I knew I wasn't going to use it for gaming, but instead I needed a fast laptop for music recording software. When you start running plug-ins, multiple inputs, a bunch of tracks, effects etc,it can bog down a processor quickly. I knew I would add an SSD drive, and more ram, so that was less of a consideration when I decided. I was looking at some core i5 laptops, but figure the quad core i7 would just about guarantee it would handle anything I threw at it. I also liked that it had an 1x8gb ram chip, so I could just add another, and not need to buy two new 8gb chips. I added a Samsung 850 EVO M.2 250gb SSD, and I love that this laptop has an M.2 slot for another drive, makes it easy to keep plenty of storage. I use the SSD drive for my OS and music software, and kept the original 1tb HDD for storage, pics and music etc. So now I have 16gb ram, with a 256gb SSD drive, and a back up 1tb HDD, Full hi-def screen, 4gb graphics card, and a top notch i7 processor. It now runs super quick,and starts up in seconds. together, both cost me about 130$ from amazon, and it was money well spent for the upgrade. The funny thing is, the specs on my laptop now, mirror many of the gaming laptops costing a lot more, but maybe are missing a feature or two, usually an optical drive, or touch screen. The good bones are there though, and for a lot less money. I like the look and feel of this laptop, and kinda like the black w/ red accents. Some don't seem to like it, but I do. So far I am very happy with this. My one complaint would be no optical drive, but an external drive is cheap enough and fits right in my laptop bag, so not a deal breaker. It all depends on what your looking for in a new laptop. this one fit the bill for me, and the price was very good. If this particular setup works for you, its a great laptop for the money, and the i7-6700HQ chip is a great processor, that has a benchmark score of over 8000, which is double most core i5 processors. This will also work for most gamers, except probably the most serious of them, and a lot of times, they run desktops anyway. Running Studio One with 4 tracks of audio, multiple effects on each track, and the CPU never went over 10% on the performance monitor. Which shows the kind of processor it is. IMO, it's the all important factor. A disc drive is cheap and easy to change, and most people do these days to SS drives, RAM can really only go so high, and is only so useful after 16gb. But a bad processor will make all the other parts irelevent, when doing anything that really tests performance. BTW, the pics include a keyboard skin I'm using too. This really is a great gaming laptop, especially for the price. I purchased this last January so it was a little more expensive but it was still great for the price back then. I was able to play The Witcher 3 and Fallout 4 beautifully with few issues. Unfortunately the computer does have a couple serious problems. 1. Like many others I have had the problem with the keyboard and the power button on occasion randomly ceasing to function and the only way to fix the problem is to do a hard reset. Unfortunately with the power button not functioning the only way to do this is to unplug the adapter, turn the laptop over, unscrew the back and unplug the battery (which is also fragile, so be careful when you unplug it and also be warned that this will likely void the warranty). It doesn't have one of those batteries that just easily pops off the back. This wouldn't be such an issue if that was the case. 2. The second problem is that this laptop is fragile as hell. I had pieces of the plastic casing on the sides and by the hinges break off just by being inside a laptop carrying case. And I had an accident while I was in the hospital a few weeks ago where I accidentally dropped the laptop. It landed on the sheet and it still cracked and the left corner shattered badly and the power adapter connector came loose. After a couple of weeks it conked out completely because of that. This would be a five star purchase if it wasn't so fragile and didn't have the keyboard & power button issue, and its the great gaming power that makes it a 3 star purchase. Based on its lack of durability alone it would be 1 star, 2 at best. If you do purchase this laptop you MUST be *ridiculously* & *extremely* careful with it. I bought it for portability and its eggshell-like fragility defeats that purpose. Now I have to try to get it fixed or replaced which isn't the best for my budget.

Absolutely fantastic laptop. For the price you can't beat it with a stick. The screen is super high resolution the thing is a beast. For starters, the laptop doesn't really weigh that much in my eyes. I've had heavier with about 1/8 the performance of this laptop. Playing Far Cry 4 on medium settings bouncing around between 50-60 FPS is pretty respectable, and maxed out sits very comfotably at 30 FPS. It does get a little warm in the center underneath if it doesn't get air. For "on your lap" type of situation I recommend a cooling pad. On a table it seems to stay pretty cool with no issues. I've seen reviews here that say the fans are loud? Full speed sitting in a large classroom full of students in silence I hear my instructor's projector fan before I hear mine, and that's me gaming when i'm done with my work. The thing is honestly very quiet. Battery life is not bad but not amazing either. 7 hours browsing not doing much and about 2-3 under heavy gaming. It comes with intel and nvidia settings in the drivers that automatically limit your FPS to 30 when not plugged in (settings that you can turn off) but honestly you're most likely gonna have this thing plugged in when you play anyway so just leave those on and save your battery from excessive drain. So about the screen bleed......its really not that bad....let be realistic here. Yes there is from the bottom when the screen projects black but to me its so minor and i've only noticed it during like an all black loading screen....in games i don't notice it at all even when the room is pitch black in the game....so honestly for the price the screen bleed is so insignificant that it's nothing to worry about. The sound.....fantastic. the loudest laptop i have ever personally encountered. Very crisp sound with decent bass. The laptop has a mini subwoofer on the bottom. (never seen that before) The build itself feels very solid kind of a matte texture. I do notice a little flex in the center of the keyboard like other customers here but WASD all day no issues. The service panel in the bottom is like a dream come true. I mean it is so nice to be able to just pop that one large cover off and BAM all of your components are there that are replaceable. SSD slot, HDD, RAM, battery I mean all easily accessable oh and network card. I would recommend buying a network card for this thing just for piece of mind. Idk didnt have any problems with the single channel but I went ahead and upgraded to the 2 antenna one and I do notice a good difference in speed of connections and range. The track pad is okay took me a little while to get used to it. One thing I didnt like- the hollow tap you get when you tap the pad. its like tapping your nail on a wooden table. its weird but it works well besides that. I just use a mouse. So all in all........150% would buy again. No regrets for the price. I mean hell even fallout 4 plays decent. 50-60 on low-med settings. To me for 800-900 bucks its a no brainer for the casual gamer. Dell really outdid themselves on this one.

Very solid laptop. Runs modern titles no issues at all. Running battlefield 4 maxed out at about 30-40 fps with dips down to 25 drop it down to high and stay well in the 50s and 60s with dips to the 40s let alone dropping it to medium or low. Running world of warcraft on the high preset at about 75-80 fps take note I am running both of these at 1080p which for a laptop is a load alone let alone on higher settings. Very good bang for your buck mine came with hardly any bloatware got rid of the mcafee it came with(who doesn't?) but other then that nothing besides the programs I've installed. Every game I have gone onto and seen if I can run it I can and with relative ease. Very fast startup time, less then 15seconds from off to completely on. The i7 is a VERY nice addition to this computer. With a few small upgrades this computer is gonna last me for years. I am gonna order a 250gb ssd and 16gb's of 1833 memory and then this computer will be set. The hard drive is a little lacking though only 5400rpm but it is a 1tb in a laptop so really can't complain there. This model is a mix between the $1100 and the $900 model on the dell website. You get the best processor the computer can come with and you don't need to bog the computer down the the UHD screen which for gaming on a 960m is a bit much. Laptops are good nowadays but not that good yet. This would make a person looking to get into PC gaming very happy or someone is looking for something for all around use very happy. Its quick and handles anything you can throw at it. For $800 this has to be the best laptop in its class.
