  • Fast with exceptional internal storage
Style: 12GB RAM | 256GB SSD Capacity: 15-15.99 in
Ordered this laptop for my partner (Susan). Her 8-year old Toshiba was beginning to act up, I saw the writing on the wall, so I began searching. Requirements for purchase - SSD Boot Drive, Internal Storage HD, Backlit Keyboard, touchscreen. 15.6" screen. Reasons - Fast boot (SSD) and Application/Program start(SSD) - I'm old school and still want local file access because we DO have places we visit that do not have wifi/internet access (Internal HD) - I wanted a LARGE HD due to Susan's 125,000+ photos and videos. Backlit keyboard - we're getting older and a backlit keyboard was a good decision for my ASUS, so I wanted it for Susan - it turned into a double-edged sword, however - more about this later. Touchscreen - easier for Susan, a non-tech user who like to zoom to see better at times and doesn't like the 'mouse', or the keyboard 'CTRL/FUNC/ALT' keys and combinations. 15.6" screen - wider selection possibilities. Items that I would have liked, but were not a deciding factor - CD/DVD ROM/RAM - I have plenty of old apps on CD, but long ago purchased a $30 external CD/DVD RW USB drive unit that works fine. It sits right next to my even older $30 external 3.5" FDD USB drive ..... yeah, I've been doing this a long time. Ordering - got here inside of a week. In light of everything going on in the world, this was surprising. Receipt - There was a large 'stab wound' hole in the outer shipping container when it arrived. I knew immediately to begin taking pictures. I opened the outer box and pulled the DELL box from the inside - 'stab wound' in the Dell box as well. I opened the inner 'Dell' box and pulled the upper egg-carton style shipping insert and saw a 'stab wound' in it as well. Removed the laptop and saw a 'scuff' mark on the outer clear plastic bag - no damage or scuff marks on the laptop. I was pleased, but still nervous about the apparent lack of shipping reinforcement surrounding the laptop. Unpacking the unit made me start thinking this was a return because things did not appear to be 'factory packed'. Initial start-up and set-up: I had read other reviews about missing HD's - incorrect SSD installs, etc. so I plugged the unit in (completely dead battery upon arrival) and allowed it to charge. I pressed the ON/OFF button (not marked - but in the general location of other laptops - top right-hand corner) and was pleased to see a normal boot to a Windows 10 Setup/Welcome screen. I realized I would have to do a complete startup/setup to be able to access the File Explorer (Windows Explorer) to check on the laptop configuration of all devices. I went through the extended computer and system startup, initialization, Windows Account login and set up process and was finally rewarded with the Win10 splash screen. I then went to the File Explorer and verified all of the necessary hardware was installed as ordered - it was, and all other computer devices were listed as advertised. Further examination of the START menu, and the 'APPS/Programs' screen in Settings - showed many 'bloatware' apps installed. I went through the Start Menu and used the UNINSTALL feature for those that were available and then the APPS/PROGRAMS screen in settings to pull everything else out such as Anti-Virus, Games, Hulu, Netflix, etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. This took about 30-minutes to get everything off the system. For SOME reason - Spotify cannot be uninstalled - there are no obvious 'uninstall' options in the Start Menu, and the APPS/PRograms in settings doesn't have an uninstall option either ...... I took it out of the 'Startup' group to get rid of its autoload interference and it mildly annoys me now and then. I recently moved from MS-OFFICE PRO 2013 to MS-OFFICE 365 on my primary ASUS laptop and wanted to get the apps on Susan's Dell laptop as well so I UNINSTALLED all of the apps that were referenced on the Dell unit. If you do not - you run the risk of activating bloatware, AND your purchased MS-OFFICE 365 apps and you'll have dual-icons throughout the Start menu - if you have a current subscription to Office 365 - uninstall everything off the new system and complete a fresh install - that's the voice of experience folks. :) PROS - FAST!!! Good touchscreen, responsive keyboard. Recognition and connecting to wifi was lightning fast - I was impressed with that. Most units seem to take forever. Other than that - it does what any laptop does CONS - The backlit keyboard - LOL - Double-edged sword. At night, or in dark environments, it's great. In the daytime, or with a bright environment, the backlight lights up the keys to the point where they make the key letter VERY hard to see - to the point where you have to wait for the required 'time out' period of no key activity before the light goes out. Then you can type, and lose the key letters again. Hahaha - it's almost laughable. I went online to see about turning the backlight off and had TWO options - the first was to update the BIOS (OMG - are you serious??), and the other option was to use the good old "Func + F6" keystrokes to toggle it on and off. The only problem was that that option did not work. I convinced myself it cannot be THAT hard so I looked closely at the keyboard (NOTE - THERE IS NO USER MANUAL OR WRITTEN DOCUMENT ABOUT THE KEYBOARD SYMBOLOGY USED - OR WHERE THE FINGERPRINT READER IS LOCATED - DUMB, DUMB, DUMB) and saw the F5 key with a small rectangle with lines coming out of it like 'light' ---- so I pressed it and Ouila! The keyboard backlights went out........ Come on Dell - not that tough to put a small piece of paper in the box that explains your F-Key layout, especially when you're not using standard layouts. FINGERPRINT reader - is the On/Off key - good luck with finding the correct pressure to register the fingerprint without turning the computer on and off ----- we're just going to stick with PIN's thank you - again, no label on the power key, or anything to ID it as the Fingerprint key - which you are asked to set up immediately after starting up the laptop for the first time ----- I said it before, I'll say it again --- DUMB, DUMB, DUMB...... Been using the laptop for about a week now with no questions, problems, moans, groans, or complaints. Have NOT tried it without a charger hooked up to see what the batter life is in a WORD environment connected to the wifi and doing 'usual and general' document work with online surfing. I'll provide an update ONLY if there are problems or issues I feel people should be aware of before purchase. Right now, I'm happy with my purchase, it was a good deal for the cost, and I'm moving forward without concern or worry about any aspect of this laptop. ... show more

  • Everything as advertised

I've had this Dell Inspiron 15 5000 for several weeks and am very satisfied with it. Set up was very easy and straightforward. No bloatware! Quickly assimilated my preferred apps and software. This system is very fast (compared to previous laptops I have owned). Reasonably simple navigation. I use the touchscreen function very little, as I prefer a mouse. If the fingerprint security feature is important to you, be prepared. During setup, the system behaved as though to really 'get this right.' Since then, it has not recognized my fingerprint (and suggests I 'try another finger' even though it never programmed additional fingers). There is no hesitation to opt for pin input so this has not really been an issue for me. The screen is display is very good. The sound system is very good. I can recommend this laptop. (I am 69 years old, not a computer geek by any stretch, although I work on it every day (mostly writing, and web research); I have owned more than 6 laptops since 2003; I normally purchase and set up laptops without professional assistance, though I do utilize a subscription support service) ... show more

  • Ok Laptop
Style: 12GB RAM | 256GB SSD Capacity: 15-15.99 in
UPDATE: Oct 13, 2020 I am updating this review a few days shy of EIGHT MONTHS! having hoped to update in Oct. The good: Specs are still good for the price. 10 key pad. The bad: Design is poor. 8 months later, I still have a hard time remembering the key keys are poorly placed. Home/End are up top, in an almost OK location, page up/down down next to 10 key pad. Should be together, at the top, like pretty much every keyboard I ever used. The silver keyboard, back-lit keys are still stupid. The silver keys should NOT be backlit, you cannot see the keys. When not lit, the letters are dark and very visible. I still hate no DVD recorder. The Ugly; Very ugly! Battery is rated for "up to 2 hours". That is NEVER real world time. That's if everything is pretty much shut off, and the first 14-30 days, ie, beyond the Buyer's Remorse period. Batteries drain rechargability and in this case, very quickly. sadly, the power supply is also weak. VERY weak. It's 45watt. After doing some extensive research, and conferring with someone I know who deals in electronics repairs, it IS safe to use a higher rated power supply, IF certain conditions are met. Voltage has to meet or exceed the original and a bunch of other technical stuff I can't explain. Translation to English: I had to purchase a couple power supplies, and one was generic, got extremely hot. The other exceeded manufacturer specs, so good there. Problem: This Dell did not accept any of the "Universal" power supply tips. Point being, ITS NOT EVEN A YEAR OLD, and at best I need a new power supply, at worst, the motherboard plug is already damaged to the point it is hard to charge. The power supply has to be at a certain angleand DON'T breathe or it will fall out of place. The motherboard jack feels loose with its grip for the supply's tip. (Ie, a new supply probably won't work, either). Finger print. I found it by accident. Never really dealt with Touch ID before, so, did not know where the print scanner was (if they said where, I did not find it). Setup was fairly simple. But, using it is a major annoyance. More times than not, it cannot recognize my print, and, rarely will it ever recognize it on the first attempt. My recommendation has dropped to DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT. There HAS to be a decent laptop in the $400-600 range that works well. This is NOT that product. Sadly, Dell is off my list for future purchases. And, Monday I will be contacting someone for an insurance claim, that I hope will be easy to replace this worthlessness. Sadly, to make laptops cheap for us, and still make money, they use inferior parts, hire inferior designers, who apparently think a white on silver backlight is cool, and, well, just not worth $50. ORIGINAL REVIEW: It's an ok laptop. Certainly not the perfect laptop, but not the worst. The good. It has decent specs for the price. It's NOT an HP, which is a plus in and of itself. Pretty much works. The bad. There are some head-scratching decisions to this model. such as: Backlit keyboard. SILVER keys with WHITE light equal can't see the keyboard symbols (letters, numbers, etc). WHO thought THAT up? Did they not even try it to see that they could not see anything? Fingerprint Reader. It works. Sometimes. Thankfully there are alternate ways to log in. Battery life. UP TO 2 hours. And then it will only get better. WHY? In today's market, when there are so many products trying to get improved battery life, WHY WHY WHY, did Dell go toward 2 hours, which never really lives up to it's max? NO Optimal Drive. Yes, people are using the "cloud" but WHY would you completely eliminate CD and DVD drives where so many of our software and drivers are stored? I purchased an external drive for $20. So, how expensive is it really to add an internal one? It's not like Dell absorbs that cost, or passes it on. Stupid for ANY brand to eliminate this, at this point in time, anyway. Overall. I spent most of the this review on the negatives. It's not a horrible laptop by any stretch of the imagination. The specs are what makes this worth considering. But, it's been about 6 months now, and I have had some time to make use of it, and it's the negatives that stand out, more than the positives. I love the 2 in 1 feature for this laptop, makes it easy to read in tablet mode. The Ryzen chipset is fast enough for multiple applications and web browsing, and battery life is great. The only downsides are the screen could be brighter, the touchpad a little more tactile, and fingerprint reader isn't always accurate. Overall a good value for the features. ... show more
