Description

Deity's S-Mic 2S shotgun microphone is designed for recordists and boom operators who need the performance of Deity's S-Mic 2 in a smaller and lighter package for all-day shoots. Weighing in at only 3 oz, the S-Mic 2S is perfect for extended overhead booming (like on a documentary) or in situations with less room to boom (like low ceilings or overhead obstructions.) The S-Mic 2S maintains the excellent off-axis coloration of its larger cousin, as well as the same all-brass construction that rejects RF Interference with the microphone. Its super-cardioid polar pattern is very forgiving, allowing talent to go slightly off-mic without sounding like they're off-mic. The off-axis coloration rejects frequencies from outside the pickup pattern, making the audio you record sound crisp, clear, and legible without worrying about what's going on around the mic. The S-Mic 2S also has the same low self-noise as the S-Mic 2, so you can hear what the microphone is pointed at, not the microphone itself. The S-Mic 2S is a great microphone for beginning boom ops and recordists. It's lightweight, sounds great, and won't get in the way of your craft. And if you're an experienced recordist, the S-Mic 2S is a fantastic microphone to add to your arsenal for when you need a low-profile shotgun mic that rejects RF interference and off-axis frequencies. Key Point • Ultra-Low Off-Axis Coloration • Low Inherent Self-Noise • Weather Resistant and Humidity Proof • RF-Interference Proof • 24V or 48V phantom powering • Super-Cardioid Pickup Pattern Shorter and lighter,Length 148mm,weight 89g The S-Mic 2S is a professional short shotgun that was designed for the video productions of today. This makes it the S-Mic 2S perfect for things like reality TV crews, indoor sit down interviews, and indy filmmaking. Super Cardioid Pickup Pattern The Deity S-Mic 2S features a super cardioid pickup pattern which minimizes surrounding ambient sounds but still offers low off- axis coloration. The S-Mic 2S also is very forgiving when trying to point it at an actor or actress because of its super cardioid pickup, making it a great microphone for new boom operators. • Fool Me Once, Fool Me Twice
I tried to get on the Deity mic wagon. I really did. I watched *hours* of reviews and comparison videos on YouTube about how great these shotgun mics were-- especially for the money. I then started by ordering the Deity S-Mic 2S (the shorter of the two Deity S-Mic series). It came with a defective mic stand attachment. Okay, not too big of a deal, but another five bucks I need to spend. Also, I found that the mic was noisy. Thinking maybe I got a bad one, I ordered and tried the Deity S-Mic 2 (the longer of the Deity S-Mic series) and I splurged for the "location kit" with hard case. Same noise problem as with the S-Mic 2S, the black matte finish had been chipped off the front a bit, and another bad mic clip was included (the brass insert could not be removed). It appears the bad mic clips are due to corrosion of the brass, and the first one was so frozen there was no hope. On the second one, I used some Kroil penetrating oil, and I was finally able to get it unstuck. Just so you understand that I'm not an unreasonable A/V or mic snob, I'll tell you that I compared the Deity S-Mics with both a Rode large-frame condenser mic and a simple stock X/Y mic capsule on the Zoom H6. In all of my testing, the Deity S-Mics were nosier. I returned the S-Mic 2 just as I returned the S-Mic 2S. I don't think it's unreasonable for me to expect that the mics have a lower noise floor than these, and the cosmetic problems along with the bad mic clips soured me on the brand. ... show more

  • Buy a clip for it...the one included is not usable.
Be sure you also order a clip. I've got a brand new mic that I can't actually mount. The clip included has a bushing reducer that is basically spot welded in and cannot be removed unless you have a drill press or something to drill it out. I'm going to have to wrap electrical tape all over this new mic in order to use it until I can now order a clip and wait for that to arrive. I've never had a clip shipped with the reducer so permanently fixed in place. ... show more

  • On the camera or on the pole
I love this little shotgun! I don't have a high quality preamp to get the most out of the low self noise, but I do get all the range and great tones. In the future when I have a better preamp and an audio helper, I'll boom with it. But for now I use it as a run and gun style on camera mic with a little $25 preamp plugged into my camera. The preamp has a gain knob and I use rechargable li-ion batteries, so with this setup I have possibly the best quality audio of any on camera mic with almost all the same features. Only thing I wish I had is the automatic on/off function and maybe a low cut filter. ... show more

  • Great mic if your needs are diverse!
I'm extremely happy with this mic, my voice has never sounded better! My jobs are a mix of indoor and outdoor and I don't have the coin to buy specialized mics for each environment. I settled on a short shotgun and after buying this one and using it for an outdoor run-n-gun as well as indoor voicovers in a less-than-optimal studio, I am convinced I made the right decision. This mic delivers a less effective noise rejection than a long shotgun, which is to be expected. Yet, when up close indoors, I'm not getting the phasing issues, either. A perfect balance that does the job for me. One mic to do it all makes my jobs simpler and have less gear to tote around. I'll keep it! ... show more

  • Perfect mate for the S-Mic 2
Far too often sound recordists and boom operators use microphones intended for use outside when shooting inside. This S-Mic 2s having a shorter interference tube is the right choice for most interior applications, with the S-Mic 2 being better for outdoor scenes. I use this little guy in difficult environments with heavy RF interference. My go-to interior mic is a modified Oktava 012 hypercardioid. On a recent feature film we used the Sennheiser 416, S-Mic 2, S-Mic 2s, and the Oktava... The four mics cut together extremely well... Especially given that the Deities and Oktava combined are not much more than the Senn 416 by itself. Tremendous value for the money! Be sure to check out the Deity W-Lav Pro too! ... show more

  • It’s awesome, plain and simple
Deity is knocking it out of the park. Great sound. I have mine paired with the tascam dr-60d mrkII. Something to keep in mind, mics are like lenses in that you should use the one you need for the job. The deity s-mic 2s is great indoors and would be my go to mic for that environment. Outdoors and the need for the mic to have further placement you would need a longer shotgun mic. ... show more

  • Nice but Noisy
I purchased this mic, figured give Deity products a try as a sound mixer, especially for their price. I received a noisy mic, so I sent it back and re-ordered a new one. Haven't received a new one yet to test, hopefully, the first mic was just a bad batch. Deity has a 1-year warranty on all products, however, I found it impossible to get in contact with their customer support team or sales. Never had any luck ... show more

  • Impossible to take off the adapter screw from the clip
There is an adapter that comes screwed into the clip that is impossible to remove. This makes the clip basically unusable for non American mic stands. I don't know why they have so tightly screwed in this adapter. Seems like a stupid way to annoy customers for no reason. For $300 plus it shouldn't be this inconvenient. Very disappointed. ... show more
