  • Everything I wanted in a stand-alone home security camera system
UPDATE Apr 2024: I have been using this monitor/camera security system for 6 years now - it has performed flawlessly in the heat of summer and freezing temperatures of winter. The picture was taken late at night today - there are no yard lights - only the camera infrared - there was a bit of fog. The screen images are HD perfect with auto-focus and exposure. I only have 3 cameras installed with a spare in reserve. ORIGINAL: I have been using the Defender system for around 6 months and I am totally satisfied with the product. It has functioned right out of the box - literally plug-and-play and continues to function flawlessly. It comes with 2 cameras, which is all I needed, but you can expand it with 2 more cameras purchased separately. I literally spent days researching all security camera offerings on Amazon and other online shopping vendors. Almost all of the offerings were for security cameras which relied on the "cloud" to store the recordings and a cell phone app to access them. Most also required a monthly service fee of one kind or another to get at your own recordings. I checked into fake security cameras - no wiring needed - I recommend that no one go that route - pointless - crooks can tell the difference. The Defender met all of my requirements: camera communicated via WIFI to a standalone mini computer - all the cameras need is a power source. I simply drilled a small hole through a wall and plugged in the power cord. The power cord has 2 sections so that you do not have to drill a hole as large as the wall plug. I use a simple appliance surge protector for each camera and the mini computer. The cameras are weather resistant - not water proof - they have not been affected by rain or snow as the roof eaves give partial protection - I may add a simple aluminum shield at a later date. The cameras have both day and night infrared optics. The cameras have a motion sensor with a wider range than the camera so that it starts recording even before the moving target enters the camera range. The mini computer analyzes the pixels and will begin recording if there is enough pixel changes to activate a motion hit - you can control the sensitivity. On the highest sensitivity, it will pick up bushes moving in a light breeze. The sensitivity settings are camera specific. They pick up small animals moving in the yard and the images are clear and crisp. The cameras also have a mic to pic up sound - so you can hear any conversation trespasser has. You also have an option to speak to someone outside via a speaker built into the camera. It comes with a SD memory card that is totally adequate but I ordered an additional memory card in case I had to turn over one to the police for evidence. If you use the continuous recording option, you might want to consider getting a larger SD memory card. I review any recordings daily and delete them if they show nothing worth keeping. The SD card holds 8GB or 700 minutes. The WIFI is good for 150 feet and was unaffected by walls, floors and ceilings. I was able to locate the mini computer anywhere in my 3 story with basement 5,000 sq ft house. You can record based on motion detection, scheduled recording periods, constant recording (it overwrites oldest recordings automatically - option), or on demand (press a REC button). You can control how long it will record from 15 seconds to 1 min for the motion detection recording. You can schedule each camera separately with selections by day (Monday), date (1-5th) and time ranges. You can individually turn cameras on and off, adjust brightness and adjust resolution. You can monitor cameras individually, with split screen or by rotation. You also have a SLEEP mode which will turn on the display only if it goes into recording mode. The recordings file screen appears as a calendar with days with recordings marked in blue - you can filter the calendar by all cameras or just one and search prior months. When you pick a day, all recordings for that day appear in a list for you to select and view and/or delete. This system is extremely well designed with all the features anyone could want and they are easy to understand and use. ... show more

  • Just What Our Animal Charity Facility Needed - Almost
Size: 4 Cameras
I did a lot of trying other cameras and research before settling on the Defender M2, then bought multiple M2 systems. We're almost perfectly happy with the systems, which we use to keep tabs on which of the special-needs animals in our facility may be vomiting or depositing less-than-optimal output in the litter boxes. I wanted a local-storage solution rather than a cloud-based solution, and have been happy with having chosen the M2 systems. Setup is about as easy and foolproof as I think you could ever hope for. The cameras and base unit connect well, even through walls and floors. My half-century background is primarily in the media industry, so I appreciate that the M2 video quality is pretty darned good, especially during the day and especially if the camera is close to the subject, but there can be a contrast issue if there's bright light and shade is cast. When the angle of the sun is just right and casts a shadow from the edge of a litter box, we can discern activity in the part of the litter that's not in the shadow, but zero in the part that is in the shadow. At night, we are not able to assess litter box deposits, or floor deposits, as well as we need to (especially solid, which is interesting). You'd think that stool on top of light-colored clumping litter would be easy to differentiate, but it's not. I'm wondering if adding another IR light would be of help in this department (EDIT: the manufacturer says no). If anyone has thoughts on this, chime in. We have had issues with brownouts causing the systems to shut down, thus we've missed out on some video that we needed. Implementing uninterruptible power supplies is recommended, as the systems don't fire back up on their own after an outage, whether short or long. It would be great if this would automatically occur. Perhaps related to the above, our systems' times have gotten out of sync with reality, thus I've had to reset the time more than once. A feature I wish the system had is a longer record time for motion-activated usage. We care for elderly, special-needs animals who tend to take forever in the litter box (or multiple boxes) and the longest recording time available in the motion-activated settings isn't long enough. We need a 5-minute and 10-minute setting in our particular case. I wish that a system could accommodate more cameras rather than our having to purchase multiple systems and try to find room for multiple base units. I wish that I could mount a camera on the wall, then have the camera be parallel to the floor, but the current mounting gizmo doesn't allow this, at least at the angles and directions we need. So, our wishlist is pretty short, really. Overall, the Defender M2 is the best solution I've found, at least for our facility's needs, and I would definitely purchase it again. I recommend it if it meets your needs. UPDATE 4-5-23: As shown on the attached photos, one of our elderly cats with a lot of health issues vomited on the light-colored carpet in our living room. The Defender Phoenix M2 system didn't show it to me under nightvision, but the emesis pile of undigested dry food is clearly visible once the sun started to come up. This is the sort of contrast issue I described above and which the manufacturer said additional IR light wouldn't help. Note that I used my iPhone 12 Pro to shoot photos of the monitor screen and the phone processed the images in such a way that the emesis pile is more visible in the nightvision photos than it was in real life when I was viewing the monitor. I'm a graphics guy and have an eye for detail and I'm telling you that the emesis pile was virtually invisible to the naked eye. ... show more

  • A baby monitor with four cameras
Essentially what you are getting with this camera system is an overpriced baby monitor that has four cameras. I like the simple Old School idea behind this unit, but it is drastically over priced for what it is. The Pros: • No internet required. ( For some this not a good thing as you can't view on your phone when you are away. ) • Simple Set Up - Straight Forward Common Sense usage. Most people could set this up without directions. • No one is hacking into your in home activities like some of the Internet based systems. • The simple presence of actual security cameras can deter criminals. So the sophistication of the until doesn't always matter. Cons: • If you have the monitor on sleep mode, the camera will activate upon motion detection. HOWEVER, there is a delay, so by the time the monitor turns on, the motion is passed and you have no idea if it was a person or a animal or a passing car b/c they are usually out of the frame by the time screen activates So you have to leave the screen on at all times - always have on record. • It is 480 OTA resolution, which is 1980's TV quality. I realize as long as it is OTA, its the best that can be done, it's a trade off for having a wireless transmission. (however, each camera has a plug, so it is not completely wireless). As long as the person is close to the camera, the quality is good enough, but if the person is 25 ft away, you aren't going to have a good resolution on them. I like the system overall, it's pretty much the only of it's kind still on the market. It is definitely overpriced. ... show more
