Description

“Glamorous, gripping, absolutely heaps of fun. I loved this.”—Lucy Foley, 1 New York Times bestselling author of The Guest List and The Paris Apartment"Unexpected delights await on every page of Ram Murali’s impressive and captivating debut. Crisp as a gin and tonic and delightfully wicked, this smart, smart novel delivers a sophisticated, subversive murder mystery set in the highest stratosphere of the international idle rich. I had to force myself not to binge it in one night so I could savor it like the rare and exquisite meal that it is." —Kevin Kwan, New York Times bestselling author of Crazy Rich AsiansThe White Lotus meets Knives Out meets Crazy Rich Asians in this devilishly entertaining debut novel: both a sophisticated locked-room mystery in the tradition of Agatha Christie, and a provocative literary whodunit for the twenty-first century.Ro Krishna is the American son of Indian parents, educated at the finest institutions, equally at home in London’s poshest clubs and on the squash court, but unmoored after he is dramatically forced to leave a high-profile job under mysterious circumstances. He decides it’s time to check in for some much-needed R&R at Samsara, a world-class spa for the global cosmopolitan elite nestled in the foothills of the Indian Himalayas. A person could be spiritually reborn in a place like this. Even a very rich person. But a person—or several—could also die there. Samsara is the Sanskrit word for the karmic cycle of death and rebirth, after all. And as it turns out, the colorful cast of characters Ro meets—including a misanthropic politician; an American movie star preparing for his Bollywood crossover debut; a beautiful heiress to a family jewel fortune that barely survived Partition; and a bumbling white yogi inexplicably there to teach meditation—harbors a murderer among them. Maybe more than one.As the death toll rises, Ro, a lawyer by training and a sleuth by circumstance, becomes embroiled in a vicious world under a gilded surface, where nothing is quite what it seems . . . including Ro himself. Death in the Air is a brilliant, teasing mystery from a remarkable new talent. Read more

  • Fun fast read
Read this book in one sitting on an overnight flight to Europe, and was so engaged that I was pushing to finish before we got to the gate. Loved the characters and their various eccentricities. What a fun read! Congrats on a wonderful first novel.

  • Intriguing Mystery
A mystery set in the fictional resort of Samsara located in the Indian Himalayan foothills. An intriguing mystery that begins in London, where lawyer Ro Krishna suddenly finds himself out of a job, but with a large severance package. Psychologically wounded, he decides to heal at the elite resort of Samsara. Ro’s time at Samsara is split between various healing practices - such as meditation, massage, and yoga – and solving a series of murders. Ro realizes that he has psychic powers. An intriguing mystery that, because of the detailed discussion of the Samsara process, is not for everyone. ... show more

  • If you like suspense. . . .
I am not usually so ambivalent about a book, especially a mystery, but I am not sure what I think about this book. I CAN say how I felt reading it: anxious.. the author was very successful in creating a sense of anticipation… and evil, but the book’s moral code is such that the reader is asked to evaluate their thoughts on what is “ right” or “ wrong.” I found that the most interesting aspect of the book. I also enjoyed the cultural observations, and to some extent, the luxury spa descriptions. I didnt enjoy the pacing of the novel and I struggled to stay with it until the end. ... show more

  • slow going
The lead character is layered and fun, and new, but the whole story wanders around so much I wished it had more focus, and let the setting be more mysterious, than spiritual. Maybe that's the point, but I started to turn the pages faster and not in the way I wanted to. Good debut.

  • Page Turner Summer 24
This book, and Ro the main character, has been my best friend the last few days. After having rediscovered Agatha Christie and her witty murder novels and after having watched The White Lotus on TV, I think Death in The Air is the perfect page turner for this summer! Full of eccentric people and a slice of India, this book is the perfect gift for anyone looking for a mystery taking place miles away from the West. Ro is definitely someone I would love to meet in person and know more about his new adventures. I can’t wait to the sequel and hopefully to a film based on the book. ... show more

  • Not my cup of chai
Perhaps I'm not hip enough, but I thought this novel a terrible read. Disjointed plot. Shallow, uninteresting characters. Stilted dialogue. Overly descriptive of fashion brands and material objects. Surprisingly little action. A murder mystery with no murder for the first hundred pages? Not exactly Agatha Christie, no matter how hard the author tries to link himself to the grande dame of the genre. Upset with myself for reading this snoozer to the end. Should have put it down earlier. Too much better literature to read. ... show more

  • Interesting.
This was an interesting story. It was not like the other books out now. I was overwhelmed with trade mark descriptions.

  • A stunning debut mystery; when do we get a sequel?
Set at a posh spa high in the Himalayas—and a just as high among the world's economic and social elites—Death in the Air is a delightful combination of an Agatha Christie-style, locked-room murder mystery, a portrait of a clever, ever-so-well educated, young professional turned accidental sleuth, and plot-driven romp where no one is quite who they seem to be. I was left guessing—and occasionally gasping—until the very end. A perfect summer read, one which I will revisit in the coming months! ... show more
