  • The Closest I’ve Come to Having a Barista Living in My Kitchen
What is there to say about an espresso machine that will set you back 25 Benjamins? Does it dispense ambrosia? Will it give me a shoulder rub in the morning while I wait for my expertly crafted espresso? Sadly, no. What the PrimaDonna Aromatic does instead is take almost every annoying, fiddly part of making a genuinely good coffee and automate it to the point where I can stumble into the kitchen half awake, tap a picture on a screen, and get something that would have required a grinder, espresso machine, milk pitcher, scale, and a decent amount of attention from me otherwise. The Bean Adapt system is probably the piece of technology that best explains where the money went. On a normal espresso setup, changing beans can mean changing grind size, adjusting dose, watching shot time, tasting, changing things again, and wasting a few shots before everything settles in. Here, Bean Adapt and Adaptive Grinding work together to adjust grind, dose, and brewing temperature around the coffee you are using. De'Longhi actually recommends giving a new bag a few espressos before activating Bean Adapt, so this is not some magical sensor that looks at a bean and instantly knows its life story. It is more of an automated dialing-in process, and in practice that is exactly what I want. Once it settles in, consistency from cup to cup is excellent. There are 38 recipes, which initially sounded like the kind of number a company comes up with by counting every possible variation separately, but there is genuinely a lot of versatility here. Espresso, americano, drip-style coffee, cappuccino, flat white, cortado, latte macchiato, iced coffee, cold brew, iced milk drinks, and a bunch of variations all live in the same machine. More importantly, they are not all being made through one generic brewing process. The PrimaDonna has dedicated extraction approaches for espresso, drip coffee, and cold brew, and the cold extraction system can produce its version of cold brew in under three minutes. It obviously is not the same process as leaving grounds steeping in the refrigerator overnight, but being able to decide I want cold brew now rather than tomorrow is a pretty ridiculous convenience. The milk system is equally excessive in the best possible way. LatteCrema Hot and Cool handles both hot and cold milk textures, and it works with dairy as well as plant-based milks. I can go from a hot cappuccino with dense foam to an iced latte with cold foam without steaming anything myself. The carafes are removable and dishwasher safe, which matters because an automatic milk system is only convenient if cleaning it does not become a new hobby. Texture is remarkably consistent, and being able to adjust the milk ratio and froth level means I am not permanently stuck with DeLonghi's idea of what my latte should taste like. The large touchscreen ties everything together much better than a wall of buttons ever could. Drinks are presented visually, customization is straightforward, and I can adjust strength, volume, temperature, milk ratio, froth, and espresso shots without diving through cryptic menus. There are four user profiles and six bean profiles as well, so this makes a lot of sense in a household where people drink very different coffee. It can even learn routines and rearrange suggested drinks based on your habits throughout the day. My morning espresso and someone else's afternoon iced latte do not have to fight over the same saved settings. There is app connectivity too, although for me that is more of a bonus than the reason to buy it. The built-in grinder is clearly audible when it runs, because there is still a burr grinder chewing through coffee beans a few feet away from you, but the noise comes in short bursts. The machine is not whisper quiet, especially in an otherwise silent kitchen first thing in the morning, but it is also not obnoxious. Brewing itself is much calmer, and the milk system makes the usual mechanical hissing and pumping sounds you would expect. Considering everything it is doing automatically, I have never found the noise unreasonable. It also feels every bit like a flagship appliance. The stainless finish, big display, and overall construction look appropriate on a machine at this price, and it absolutely becomes a centerpiece on the counter. It is fairly deep, though, so this is one of those appliances where I would actually measure the counter before ordering rather than eyeballing it and hoping for the best. The 74-ounce water capacity helps justify the footprint because I am not constantly refilling it after a few drinks. There is still maintenance. The machine rinses itself, but I still have to empty the grounds container and drip tray, keep the milk system clean, deal with the brew unit, and descale when required. Fully automatic does not mean maintenance free. What it does mean is that the repetitive work happens in larger, occasional chunks instead of every single time I make coffee. I would much rather empty a puck bin later than tamp, knock out, wipe down, purge a steam wand, and clean up loose grounds every morning. And then there is the price. Around $2,500 is an objectively absurd amount of money to spend on a coffee machine if you drink one cup a week. Heck, this is hard to justify even if you drink three cups a day. You can also build a very serious traditional espresso setup for the same money, one that could potentially make better espresso while giving you dramatically more control over every variable. But then I ask myself: could I actually make a better espresso myself? Maybe. Maybe if I did not have work that morning. Maybe if I had the patience to methodically weigh everything, dial in the grinder, distribute, tamp, watch the extraction, taste it, make an adjustment, steam the milk properly, and then clean everything afterward. Maybe. And even then, that assumes I get everything right. But at the end of the day, why would or should I do all of that every morning when I can press one button and get something that (let's be honest, I am not James Hoffmann) is probably better than what I would consistently make myself anyway? That is really the PrimaDonna Aromatic's entire argument. You are not paying $2,500 because there is no cheaper way to make espresso. You are paying $2,500 to make a very, very good espresso, cappuccino, flat white, iced latte, or cold brew with almost none of the skill, time, or morning brainpower normally required. If that level of convenience sounds ridiculous, this machine probably is not for you. If it sounds glorious, you already understand why this thing exists. ... show more

  • A genuine step up from the Eletta Explore, though not a cheap one
We've had the De'Longhi Eletta Explore for a little over a year and have loved it, so I went into this Vine review expecting a mild upgrade at best. The PrimaDonna Aromatic turned out to be a bigger jump than I anticipated. It's a fully automatic espresso machine that grinds, brews, and can texture milk for lattes and cappuccinos with almost no manual input, and after a couple weeks of daily use it's replaced the Eletta as our main machine. The most noticeable difference day to day is noise. The PrimaDonna is considerably quieter during grinding and brewing than the Eletta, which matters if you're making coffee early in the morning without waking the rest of the house. Coffee quality is excellent on both machines, but the PrimaDonna's grinder recalibrates itself as it grinds to keep the dose and grind size consistent, and I can taste the difference in consistency from cup to cup. The touchscreen is also noticeably larger than the Eletta's, and it walks you through setup, cleaning, and descaling with on-screen graphics, which makes maintenance less of a guessing game. As for how they compare directly: both machines have hot and cold milk frothing carafes, so that's a wash, and both have WiFi with app connectivity, just through different apps. Where they actually differ is clearance for a travel mug. The Eletta's base flips open to give you extra room underneath the spout, so you can brew straight into a tall travel mug. The PrimaDonna doesn't have that flip-open base, so travel mugs are more of a squeeze. If you regularly take coffee to go, that's worth knowing going in. The PrimaDonna does make up for it with a larger water tank and bean hopper, so we're refilling less often. Would I have paid full price to upgrade from the Eletta to the PrimaDonna out of pocket? Honestly, probably not. The Eletta is already excellent, and the price jump to the PrimaDonna is significant for what amounts to a quieter, more consistent version of a machine we were already happy with. Losing the easy travel mug clearance stings a little too, though it's not a dealbreaker for us since we drink most of our coffee at home. Pros: noticeably quieter operation, more consistent grind and extraction, larger touchscreen with clear guidance, bigger water tank and bean hopper. Cons: less clearance for travel mugs than the Eletta's flip-open base, meaningfully more expensive. If you're deciding between the two, the Eletta Explore is genuinely a great machine and probably the smarter buy for most people. The PrimaDonna is for someone who wants the quietest, most refined version of that experience and doesn't mind paying for it. Either way, once you're making coffee like this at home, the savings from skipping coffee shop runs adds up fast and takes some of the sting out of the price. Five stars for what it does, just go in knowing it's a luxury upgrade rather than a must-have one. ... show more

  • The Dream!!
This is our fourth De'Longhi espresso/coffee machine and every time they release a new one, I start drooling for it. But I'm honestly not sure what they could possibly release in the future that would be better than this?? I can't really imagine many improvements to this machine as it's SO GOOD. I loved our last machine (the Rivelia) because it is so easy to make cappuccinos and lattes with, requiring no work from the user. But the new PrimaDonna? It does all of this AND makes iced drinks, too. And so many of them! Some I've never even heard of! We've been using the machine for a couple weeks now and we are heavy users. I start the day with a couple cups of coffee with crema (once you have this, you will never want regular drip coffee again... but if you do, this machine can also make that) and usually have a sweet treat in the afternoon, like a cappuccino or iced cappuccino. Sometimes I'll have a flat white or an Americano and sometimes I'll just brew a double espresso shot or a cold brew. It feels like the options are endless! And everything tastes very high quality to the point where once you have it, you can't imagine going back to another machine. In the evening, I use the machine for tea - our last machine had a hot water setting, but this one actually has a tea setting where you can choose the temperature of the water based on the type of tea you're using. My husband likes the look of the Rivelia better- it is smaller and more discrete. But I kind of like how the PrimaDonna is bigger and looks more professional with the touchscreen- just make sure you have the space for it. The touch screen makes things SO easy and even gives you a description of each coffee drink. It also makes it very easy to clean and descale as it tells you exactly what to do and you don't have to frantically Google or look up YouTube videos to figure out what to do. Of course, this is a pricey machine. But I think that's very expected given the brand and capabilities of the machine. It does so much and I'm sure there's a lot I haven't even explored yet. There's already so much more I could say about this (the bean adapt technology is great! the bean hopper and water tank are nice a big! The machine is actually polite when it asks you to do something lol). In case you can't tell, I'm a huge fan of the De'Longhi PrimaDonna and I highly recommend it to anyone who loves daily coffee and coffee drinks! ... show more

  • A coffee machine that does nearly everything for you
The De'Longhi PrimaDonna Aromatic is a top-of-the-line fully automatic espresso machine, and it can do just about everything. It takes you from whole beans to finished coffee with a single touch, whether you want it hot, cold, black, or with milk. It's a lot of fun to use, and it makes great coffee with very little experience required of the user. It's a large machine. The base footprint is about 10.3 inches wide by 18.2 inches deep (26.2 by 46.3 cm), so it claims a solid chunk of counter or table. Even so, I find it's actually a good fit for an apartment because it's very space-efficient in how many roles it fills. There's no need to find extra room for a grinder, or to keep counter space clear for dosing a portafilter. Everything happens inside the box. The front is dominated by a large touch screen that walks you through maintenance and setup procedures, as well as recipe selection. The UI framerate is a little slow, which suggests the embedded system is somewhat underpowered for its role, but it works well enough, and the menus are laid out cleanly. Setup is easy if you follow the on-screen instructions or the manual. Run the rinse, prepare a few test coffees, and you're done. Cheaper machines often need a few rinse cycles before the water tastes right, but the water coming out of the De'Longhi was perfect almost straight away. The machine can make 38 different kinds of coffee, and you can adjust the amount of water, milk, or coffee in a drink by tapping the screen. All of the recipes are displayed by default, but you can press the Hot or Cold buttons on either side of the screen to filter for only hot or cold drinks, respectively. That's a nice touch. There are some neat features for dialing in the grinder setting and water temperature. You can set values manually, or you can follow the Bean Adapt wizard and let it do the heavy lifting based on the type of beans you have. Making cappuccinos or any other drinks with the milk carafes is convenient. The Aromatic measures and froths the milk for you, dispensing only as much as required. The carafes can then be removed and placed in the fridge with the remaining milk. It works with cow, soy, almond, and oat milk. I've been using oat milk for cappuccinos, and I've been really happy with how good it tastes. The machine confines the mess to the internal grounds bin and drip tray. I have it set up on a table in my bedroom, and I haven't gotten any grounds or liquid on the table or floor. The grounds bin and drip tray assembly pulls out of the unit easily to be cleaned. The water tank is conveniently placed on the side and slides out from the front when you need to refill. Just about every important component of the Aromatic that gets dirty, including the milk carafes, straws, and knobs, can be disassembled and placed in the dishwasher for a thorough cleaning. I'm currently the only one using the machine, and the water tank is large enough to last me several days between refills. The kit comes with a water hardness tester as well as a water filter. During setup, you inform the machine of the hardness level of your tap water, so the onboard computer knows when to alert you to run the descaling procedure. The Aromatic can also be configured through the mobile app to connect to the internet. I haven't tried that yet, since I'm a bit particular about letting devices onto my network. Fortunately, all the important things are available on the touch screen directly. I'm still getting used to the convenience of this machine and all of its features. I'm planning to try some iced coffee drinks next. The price is certainly high, but for a premium fully automatic machine made in Italy, it's worth considering, especially on sale. It does a ton of things for you, and the build quality is good. It's definitely a good idea to run any maintenance procedure the system alerts you to, such as cleaning and descaling, so you can get the most life out of the Aromatic. ... show more

  • Outstanding…..but…
Engineering at its BEST! I already own and LOVE my Delonghi Revelia espresso machine, but deep down longed for the PrimaDonna as everyone loves to own a top-of-the-line item. I must say, it really is what all the hype is saying. How could my coffee get even better? Well, it can with this machine. Even the milk froth seems better (?). This actually comes with both your hot and cold carafes, whereas, I had to purchase my Revelia cold milk carafe separately. I actually prefer my Revelia for one touch bean switching, which requires zero emptying as you have two individual (external) bean containers (hoppers) to change/switch from decaf to full cafe (or any 2nd bean choice you may have) Now, with this new PrimaDonna, I will actually have to empty the bean hopper...BUT the PrimaDonna WILL automatically and immediately Bean Adapt for your newest beans and that takes about 1-2 minutes. It's pretty impressive, however, if you will bean switch often as we do, because I am a solo decaf drinker, that will be something to consider going forward. However, as a workaround, you DO have the option to always keep a primary bean choice in the hopper and just use pre-ground coffee for someone that occasionally wants a different blend if you don't want to empty the beans. However, if bean switching is not a concern for you, the PrimaDonna excels in other areas, like being quieter, their signature “Bean Adapt” technology and with cold brews. The PrimaDonna actually has a dedicated cold brew extraction technology built in and this is a genuine advantage. My Revelia doesn't do cold brew at all. It can make hot espresso and chill it, but that's fundamentally different from a true cold extraction and the result will taste a bit flatter. PrimaDonna's LatteCrema Cool frother makes genuine cold foam cappuccinos and iced lattes and the foam on cold drinks is fluffy and airy, not separated! It cold froths coconut milk, oat milk, and dairy beautifully. This is where it truly shines and is far ahead of all the others. So, the bottom line is, you need to decide what are your coffee needs and what coffees you will actually be brewing. If you're going to genuinely enjoy making cold brew, iced lattes, and cold foam drinks regularly, then ABSOLUTELY the PrimaDonna should be your go-to machine! This may seem rather expensive, but it is totally a master in it's class and if you are a coffee nerd or coffee snob, worth every penny! Oh and setup is a breeze. It literally walks you through every step!!! ... show more

  • Premium Coffee Experience with Excellent Convenience
This is an impressive fully automatic coffee machine with a huge amount of functionality. The biggest advantage is how easy it makes preparing different coffee drinks. Having many one-touch recipes means everyone can quickly find something they like. Espresso comes out rich and aromatic when the machine is properly adjusted. The automatic milk system is especially convenient for cappuccino and latte drinks. I also appreciate having both hot and cold drink options. The controls are intuitive considering how many features the machine offers. Once everything is configured, making coffee requires very little effort. The grinder eliminates the need for a separate appliance. Being able to adjust coffee settings also provides much more flexibility than a basic automatic machine. The machine looks premium and makes an attractive addition to the kitchen. The drink selection is one of its strongest features. It is particularly useful in a household where different people prefer different coffees. Cleaning is reasonably straightforward thanks to the automated functions. The removable components also make routine maintenance easier. There is definitely a learning period if you want to customize every setting. It is also a fairly substantial machine, so counter space should be considered before purchasing. The price places it firmly in the premium category. However, for someone who regularly buys espresso-based drinks, the convenience is excellent. Overall, it delivers a very complete home coffee experience with impressive variety and automation. ... show more

  • Love this machine!
I ordered the De'Longhi PrimaDonna Aromatic Fully Automatic Espresso Machine recently and it's amazing! This is my second Delonghi coffee machine so I was very familiar with how to work it straight out of the box. I've had my previous machine, Magnifica Start, for the past two years and I have loved it. This PrimaDonna is on a whole different level and I'm in love! The built-in grinder and Bean Adapt settings make getting the right grind completely effortless, so every shot tastes fresh without needing extra tweaking. It's so easy to make all kinds of drinks from hot to iced lattes or cold brews. The 2 included containers LatteCrema Hot and Coolmilk frother are a game changer for me. I love that I can keep the containers filled with my preference of milk types in the refrigerator and take it out as needed without having to measure any amounts since the machine does it all for me. At the end of each drink that uses milk, the machine prompts you to clean the milk spout by turning the dial on the container to Clean while it's still attached to the machine. With my old machine I always had to manually remove the pieces to clean after frothing milk. The containers are dishwasher safe, but for me personally, I will only hand wash them. There are so many one-touch drink options right on the screen but you can also go in and tweak the drink to your liking. Some you can have more milk, add an espresso shot, etc. It has a milk and tea option if you want to make hot chocolate or hot tea. It even has options for the type of tea you're drinking to give you the optimal temperature. You can also create up to 4 profiles with everyone's preferred drinks so you don't have to scroll through all of the drinks on the display screen. This machine is also wi-fi enabled and there's an app where you can go in and create your profiles, tweak your drinks, turn the machine on and off and make a drink. Now, if you need milk and you're not around to insert the canister, it's not going to make that drink. I like to turn on the machine from the app when getting up in the morning so it starts up the machine. While there is a drip tray included, I always keep a cup underneath the spout when not using because every time the machine turns on/off it will release water to clear out the machine. The grounds container on this machine is so much better than my old machine because I can slide it out and then remove the separate grounds container to dispose of the used grounds. I really love how this bean hopper has a rubber seal on the lid so the beans don't become compromised by the air. My old machine did not have this and I was always concerned that the beans wouldn't be as fresh as I liked. The top of the machine has a compartment for a measuring scoop and a spout for start up and cleaning. I love that I can keep it in a convenient place so I won't lose it. This machine will also brew drinks with pre-ground coffee but I don't use it because I prefer fresh ground beans from the hopper. It's nice to have the option if that's your preference. I haven't had to descale/clean this machine yet. My old machine had to be cleaned about every 30 days and let me say that you do not want to skip this. My old machine wouldn't allow you to pause or skip a cleaning cycle. I found it frustrating at times to start up my old machine only to have it tell me that I need to descale it before I could make my drink. The process took 20-30 minutes and you had to be with it most of the process to add the descaler, water, rinse, rinse, etc. This machine appears that it will indicate that it needs descaled and you can skip the descaling to later. I don't know how much later, but at least you can make your drink prior to the next cleaning. I always use the Delonghi descaling liquid. I'm just not willing to compromise my machine, especially this machine that is $2500. I found this machine easy to use straight out of the box. It is beautiful and sleek looking. It is deep on your counter and will take up nearly the entire counter from front to back but I don't find it to be too wide, especially for all it does. I find the Delonghi coffee machines to be of the highest quality and if you take care of it, it will last you a long time. Make sure to register your machine so it's under warranty if you need it. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this machine! ... show more

  • I understand how this is the flagship - UPDATED: unsafe electrical issue
IMPORTANT UPDATE: I originally rated this five stars, but something happened that is making me edit that rating. The original review is below. About two weeks into owning this unit, I brewed my wife's cup of coffee, switched to my profile, then went to brew my cup. When it started to grind the beans to brew the second cup, the machine went dark. I checked the power buttons on the back and the front, but got no response. I did some checking and found that it had tripped the circuit. I thought it was weird, but I flipped the breaker back and was able to brew a new cup. In the weeks since, it has continued to trip the circuit when starting a second cup randomly. It isn't every time, but it happens enough to raise concern, as this machine has some internal electrical problem that is tripping the circuit breaker. I reached out to De'Longhi customer service, who had me send them images and try to get a video. As it happens, every time I bring my phone to record it failing, it doesn't, and every time I forget, it trips the breaker. I tried it in other outlets and on different circuits throughout the house, and it does the same thing on any of them. Their customer service says my home's electricity is the problem and faulty, and that I should have an electrician check it, because it doesn't happen every time on this unit. This is clearly an issue with the coffee maker, and their choice not to support it or even acknowledge it could be their problem leaves me speechless. OLD REVIEW: I want to get the elephant out of the way first: this is an expensive machine. For some, this may be way outside of what you are willing to pay for coffee. Is it worth it, though? For us, it is. (questionable, based on update) This is the flagship De'Longhi superautomatic espresso machine. For reference, a superautomatic espresso machine is a machine where you put in beans and water (and hook up the included milk container if you want a milk drink), and it does everything else for you. In practice, I can turn on the machine, let it heat up, press a button with my cup under it, and, in most cases, have a perfect drink ready in less than two minutes. As the flagship, we had very high expectations for what it would produce. Appearance: This thing looks really nice on the counter. De'Longhi really went above and beyond on design, putting out a coffee machine that looks like it is worth the price tag. The stainless steel doesn't attract fingerprints, the finishes are all high-quality, the build is solid, and the lines flow very well. We are upgrading from a different De'Longhi, and the design and build of this are far above those of our already impressive machine. Noise: Most superautomatic machines are designed to make good coffee, and noise doesn't seem to be a consideration, especially during bean grinding. This is not the case for the PrimaDonna. When reviewing my older machine, I took some measurements with a DB meter set up 3 feet away from the cubby during the three phases: grinding, brewing, and puck dumping at the end. Our old machine read 75 dB, 50 dB, and 55 dB, respectively. The PrimaDonna read 61 dB, 42 dB, and 50dB. This equates to a perceived difference of almost half as noisy. We can have a conversation without raising our voices when it is doing its thing. Brew: For this test, I made two double espressos, a flat white, a cafe crema (which we make daily as our normal drink), and a cold-brew, cold-foam cappuccino. The machine has an auto bean sensor that will guide you to make an espresso by gauging the proper grind, temperature, and volume to get the best coffee from your beans. As a result, all of the coffees it has made have been perfect. The flavor profile is better than anything I've been able to produce at home. The crema is fluffy, and it tastes good enough to ruin other coffees. The fact that I can save profiles and easily recall them for whichever bean I am using is a bonus that I didn't know I needed. The milk drinks, both hot and cold (each comes with a container), are fluffy and smooth. Since we normally have cafe crema as our default drink, I only timed the brewing for that. From the time you turn on the machine until it is ready to brew the first cup, it takes 45 seconds. I select my profile (you can have multiple, named profiles for your drink customization), then hit brew. It takes 10 seconds to grind the beans, 1:05 to brew the coffee, and 10 seconds to clear the puck, for a total of 1:25 from start to a hot cup of coffee.
