I have been trying several different brands of safety shoes/boots over the last several years, trying to settle in on a company where quality is good, shoes are comfortable, and price is reasonable. Before these, I had begun to gravitate to a couple of different style of Wolverines, which have proven to be good shoes. I have tried more expensive Timberland Pros and Red Wings, as well as three or four other brands. In fact, I didn't even know Danner made work boots until doing some digging, based on a recommendation, for normal hiking boots. (Incidentally, my son has put a ton of hiking into his Danners and still swears by them... and they are still in one piece, which is an accomplishment for him.) I purchased these about 18 months ago. They took a bit of breaking in but I have been alternating between this pair and a Timberland Pro pair (which was notably more expensive). My work is mixed industrial - lots of concrete/gravel walking, lots of ladder/stair climbing, etc. The Danners have won the day. After the break-in period (took about a month of alternating wear), these have worked better than any pair of safety boots I have owned in the last 20 years. The fit is spot on. I tend to role my foot inside out as I walk, which means that a poorly fitting pair of shoes will give me blisters on the outside of my feet in no time. Never had a blister with these, even in varying weather with different types of socks (thick; thin, wool; cotton; synthetic blends; etc) They stay reasonably dry even without treatment. I prefer composite toes because they tend to be more comfortable overall. This pair is no exception, especially outdoors in the cold Iowa winter. The tread wears well and has maintained good traction throughout. Even the insole has provided a very nice level of arch support, something else I am not used to in the work boots I have owned in the past. Unlike many where it feels good the first time you put them on and then the support seems to disappear when you wear them, these seem to maintain a very consistent level of support over time/usage. If I must find an "issue" with them, then it is the fact that they do tend to untie relatively easily. That being said, I have had that issue with nearly all work boots (operator error perhaps? LOL!) Other than that, I can find no issues with these at all and intend to buy another pair of Danner Vicous workboots soon. This is a great pair of work boots, period.

Use: I'm a construction project manager working on small, residential remodels. I am on my feet 10-hours a day on construction sites not just yelling and screaming at people but also 'working'. I'm gluing pipes together, digging holes, putting up framing, running wire, etc. Not just office work. I needed a boot that works. Experience with work boots: I've owned boots of all shapes and sizes from heavy duty steel-toed, thick soled monsters that tired out my quads and gave me blisters on my Achilles to lightweight "tennis shoe boots". Don't know the official classification for the last one, but boots that provide minimal protection while looking like a boot and are cushy soft all day. Price range: I was looking for a boot under $200. Obviously, there are going to be nicer boots with better performance for much more money, so my review is based upon my price target. Product experience: I've owned this boot for 10-plus months using it on a daily basis in a moderate climate (no snow), lots of days with 100-degree heat. Modifications: aftermarket insole - I needed a little bit more cushioning / padding and have not worn the boot with its original insole. Review: 4.5" Vicious is the perfect boot for my application. Very breathable and not too constricting. Break-in time was minimal and it has still held its shape and form almost a year after purchase with no signs of significant structural degradation. Boot has nicks, scratches and cuts from kicking out blocking, adjusting framing members and me being an impatient hooligan on the job site. I’ve not treated this boot kindly and it is holding up. However, synthetic material around the toe box is showing significant wear and I’m expecting I’ll need a new pair in another year. I read other reviews and have found consistent results/observations. This boot is extremely comfortable and has enough protection to meet my needs. Would I buy again?: I occasionally indulge myself and try on boots at the building supply store when I’m in there picking up parts. I wonder if there was a better boot out there for me and I made a mistake blindly buying Danners online from Amazon without trying out other pairs. I can say confidently the Vicious is the most comfortable boot I’ve put on and I have no intention of switching out when this boot dies on me. Sure, a pair of Red Wings might last me longer but they are twice as much and half as comfortable. Improvements?: Materials could be a little bit more durable but it's always a trade-off. A heartier boot won't breathe as well and will be less comfy. Also, price point would be higher. Overall: Best sub-$200 boot as long as you budget in a replacement at the 2-year mark.

I love these boots. Danner makes the most comfortable boots I’ve ever worn, hands down. The break-in period basically ends the moment they’re dropped off on your front porch. They felt comfortable right away, which is a big deal when you’re on your feet all day. I’ve tried other brands too. Carolina boots were pretty comfortable, but they didn’t breathe very well once my feet started sweating. I also tried Ridgecut boots, and they felt great at the beginning of the day, but by the end of the day they were digging into the back of my foot. These Danners have been a totally different story. Comfortable from day one, solid support, and no miserable “just suffer through it until they break in” nonsense. Definitely worth it if you want a boot you can actually wear all day without hating your life by quitting time.

First impressions: Pros: - the BOA system seems to work well but I'll know whether or not it's good in a few months and will be able to confirm that it's good if it doesn't start peeling/breaks altogether. - High quality leather and materials all around -light and comfortable, the shoes bend without creating annoying creases that lead to cracks. Someone really thought it through. -good arch and ankle support when tightly clamped down on the boa mechanism. - No visible defects or imperfections, both are evenly made and look the same on both feet. - the design is very good for a work boot, not too many annoying design cues because it's a work boot. - high comfort level with a very thin sock (hoping they will stretch after I break them in a bit, if not I will update the review). - No slipping on ice, oil or anything really - waterproofing works. Cons: -VERY small for size 9.5 boots,go up half a size if you wear thick socks. - very short heel, they're about 1.5-2" shorter than the rest of my boots. - the leather part scuff up rather easily, scratched them up before I wore them outside, against the DRYWALL. -minor design complaint: the "COMP TOE" sign was not necessary nor looks good. Will end up attracting dirt, probbaly contributes to the overall high price of the boot. - profound use of non-leather synthetics and mesh on roughly 40-50% of the boot surface, don't like that, not for $270+, plus the fees. -the price tag of $300+ after taxes puts it outside of the price range of most people. L My favorite boots were an American-made pair of Wolverines that lasted me about 8 years, the shoe laces were the main annoyance so, when they fell apart, I tried to fix the problem by switching to a pair of Wolverine-made i-90 EPX Boa, only to find out that Wolverine had outsourced all their work boot manufacturing to China, after exchanging more than one pair of their shoes due to quality issues, factory defects, etc. The i-90's were also nowhere near as comfortable as the pair they replaced, the waterproofing existed on paper only and the Boa's black metal straps kept getting loose, also started peeling a few months into use. When they inevitably fell apart 14 months after purchase I threw them away and purchased a pair of size 10 Thorogoods but they turned out to be too big, too stiff and way too uncomfortable. Tried Timberlands and many other brands, hoping to find something I like, these seem to be it, I really hope that they will split the difference and be my daily driver, really don't want to do any more shoe shopping for the next 3-5 years because there's nothing worse than shopping for boots or trousers.

I would like to keep this concise, but I have to give color & context. I am a mid 40's Chef, that's overweight with hip, knee and ankle pain from sports injuries and a lifetime of working on my feet. I have wide feet and flat arches, with exaggerated width in my right foot. In short, I have a hard time finding shoes remotely suited to my lifestyle, and I usually blow right through them. After a week, I can say that these are the best shoes I've ever bought. I wear New Balance athletic shoes when having fun, and love them, but needed a slip/oil resistant work shoe. I've worn Shoes For Crews, Danskos, Bates, Red Wings and Dr Martens trying to acheive the combination of proper fit and value. I don't mind paying a premium for shoes, but they had better last. These shoes are off to a great start, and I will be sure, in all fairness, to report back after six months and a year. So far, the have been amazingly comfortable, with zero break-in. The foot bed is wide, and well cushioned. The Vibram sole and sure footed and grippy. The collar is well padded, and doesn't rub, even with shorter socks. They have relieved the chronic pain listed above without claiming to be orthotic. They look and feel well made, and at ~$150, I consider them well worth it. My only regret is that I wish that I had found out about Danner shoes 30 years ago.

This is my second pair of Danners boots. My first pair lasted me a hard working year. Still have a little tred on the souls. Leather is still good. Should have oiled more. But on my right boot. Left side a seam came undone. But that is not the boots falt. I work in concrete. The thread dried out or I may have caught the boot on rebar, tie wire or something to pull it open. 1" then dirt started coming in. Only reason I didn't get it stitched up was the inside padding went flat. I figured I got my money worth. Time for a new pair. I tried looking for another boot that compared to these right out of the box. I just didnt like anything else. Nice fit right out of the box. Kept my feet dry within reason on the wet puddle stomping days. Probably would have gone longer if I didn't rip the seam and condition the boot more. Along with a pair of GELLING insouls. Working in this field for 15 years no other boot lasted me this long. I tried cheaper. I tried more expensive brands. They did not work for me. DANNER is not expensive. Worth every penny to me. Made in the USA as well.

Frustration is mounting as these are the second pair of the "Vicious" work boots I've tried. Others have reported this particular style of boot runs large, so the first pair I ordered was a 9 Wide, I usually wear an 8.5D. Sure enough they were too long for my feet so I returned them. I'm wearing the second pair of Vicious boots I ordered in 8.5 "Wide". And they are too wide. Why are they too wide when I ordered an 8.5 "Wide" you might ask - they are really an "EE". The order choice was simply "8.5 Wide" or 8.5 or 9.0, etc. I wear a wide but not a "EE." My other peeve is with the shoe laces. The black "Vicious" boots had the very best shoe laces I have ever had in my decades of boot wearing, they had a unique 'rough' texture that should forever keep the laces from loosening. These brown "vicious" boots have the more or less usual laces that sure enough come unlaced by the end of the day. However these boots have some excellent attributes. They are nicely cushioned and I love the sole, it is very slip resistant when wet or damp. The build quality is quite good which I expected for this 250 buck shoe. Bottom line: comfortable for all day work wear, light weight boot but high quality. Be very careful if you are ordering a "wide" size - wide could actually be a "EE" when you need a "D."
