    • Well made and helps my kids learn about the Bible
The ESV Kids Audio Bible Player is well made, and does everything as advertised. I am giving it five stars since my 8-year old likes listening to it and has learned more about the Bible because it is actual text versus condensed stories in Bible story books. She says her favorite part are the songs so that she doesn't get bored only listening to the Bible text. I have found that she has taken the initiative to listen to the Bible player on her own. In my opinion, any tool that helps kids learn more about the Bible and keeps their interest is worthy of consideration. I think that this Bible player would be good for kids starting around 5 or 6 years old. If the kids can listen to a longer Bible story and likes listening to songs, then this may be a good fit. Being able to read would be ideal to use the operating manual content index. It's also probably dependent on the temperament of the kids and their attention span. In the age of tablets, smart phones, game consoles, and the Internet, an audio-only device would be hard-pressed to compete for the attention of a child. In our family, we have time set aside for Bible reading, so this actual works well to add variety for Bible time. I feel that in order to best equip and train children, starting early with the Bible is important, and this Bible player is helping. One Sunday when my kids were sick and not able to go to church, we listened to the Bible player for 45 minutes. That's pretty impressive for my 8-year old and 5-year old. As a parent, listening with your kids and asking follow up questions (i.e. checking for comprehension, asking what they learned or found interesting) I think is an effective way for them to learn more about the Bible. They actually asked if they can stay home every week and listen to the Bible player instead, but I let them know fellowship with others is also an important aspect. Pros: --With the operating manual, navigation through the Bible text and songs is straightforward with the five control buttons. --Dramatized version of the ESV text helps add depth to the Bible and keeps the kids interest. Background music is a nice touch. --Kids like to hear the songs, and since they are included with the relevant Bible passage it adds meaning and context of the song. --The Bible player picks up from where you left off so you can continue easily without searching for your place. --Audio is clear and can be turned very loud. Battery lasts for a very long time. Cons: --Without the operating manual, it is difficult to find the desired content unless you have it memorized. --In the version I received, there is a transposing error in the operating manual on pages 7-9. The first column number was swapped with the middle column number, which was easy for me to figure out. I would expect this to be fixed in future editions. --Following along with a printed Bible in the New Testament is difficult, as there is no information on the scripture reference on the selected audio passages. The Old Testament tells you the scripture reference at the beginning of each section. Other observations: --When no buttons are pressed for a few minutes, it appears the buttons needs to be pressed twice for the control to occur. Perhaps it goes into a sleep mode, and the first button press wakes it up (with beep) so that it can respond to the next button press. --The "M" button at the bottom of the cross beeps but does not do anything on my player. --Button beeps are a constant volume and do not scale with the speaker volume. --The display does not have a backlight. ... show more

    • A fantastic tool for allowing kids to hide God's Word in their hearts!
Overall I think this player is fantastic and meets many of the needs I had when ordering it. I do wish a few things were different (see below): When we came home from an event last night the player had arrived! I was so excited to have our boys (4 and 5) start using it. They love it! One of them wants to listen to the same story over and over again and one of them wants to listen to all the stories. I love the Bible stories, and songs. I Love that it is straight from God's Word! The dramatized version keeps the kids engaged and it's easier for them to understand what is going on because of the different voices. I love the variety of stories and that they are learning so many new stories - many that our Bible story books have not included in the past. I love that the Psalms are included, as well as so many proverbs. I do have a few questions (maybe I missed something, or ideas for a future model) - is there any function on this that is a sleep timer? (They love listening to stories while they go to sleep and I don't want it playing all night - especially since it runs only on the battery (which is rechargeable via the included charger) I also would love maybe 5 or 10 buttons we could program with our personal favorites so it would be easy for kids to find what they are looking for. It also would be great to have the option to use the player plugged in so that it won't drain the battery (and could be used for longer periods). As much as I love the content that was chosen I am also wondering why so much is missing. The book of Acts is completely missing - so many great stories of the early church, and it would be great to include some key passages from the new testament that are so helpful to memorize - 1 Corinthians 13, the fruit of the spirit, Ephesians 6 (the armor of God), etc... it is curious to me why Acts was left out, Revelation would be great to have included also. But it wasn't a deal breaker for me because I can still read them those stories on my own. Overall we are very excited about this new tool for learning God's Word. I decided to go ahead and get this even though it didn't exactly fit all my criteria because I think it will still be beneficial in the long run and there are ways we can work around all the issues I brought up. Thanks so much for making a player to help our children love God's Word even before they can read!!! And we might end up getting the full ESV player in a few months to supplement some of the stories that are missing, but that doesn't have the songs and it is nice to have the option of just stories. Overall a great blessing and we are all excited to see how God's Word impacts our lives as we are faithful to fill our minds with His truth! ... show more
