Description

D'Addario VENN Generation 2: an advanced synthetic reed constructed of polymer fibers, resin, and natural cane elements. Designed to give players the benefits of synthetic reeds without compromising on the sound and playability of cane reeds. Developed by the industry’s most revered engineers, VENN signals a whole new era in woodwinds innovation: combining the stability and longevity of a synthetic reed with the sound and feel of natural cane. To mimic the organic structure of cane, we reverse-engineered cane itself, layering different strengths of polymer fibers with resin and natural reed elements to make up the reed blank. The result? VENN outlasts and outperforms anything else like it – all while sounding and playing like your favorite cane reed.

  • Best synthetics that sound natural
Size: Strength 3.0
Player of over 30 years. I have played cane nearly all of my time up until the past year. Sure, in the past I experimented with synthetic reeds and found that I wasn’t a huge fan of them because they either sounded too buzzy even for jazz, or they were to tough to control pitch wise requiring way more attention than cane. I decided to give them a shot again and looked at the current generation. I have a small selection of most of the major brands in various strengths on Tenor of this newest round of synthetics by established brands as well as newcomers. When I got around to trying the Venn generation 2 reeds on Tenor, I was floored. They immediately sounded great and they were very easy to control. I had no issues adapting to playing them over the course of an afternoon. I immediately bought a total of 4 in to have a rotation in the strength that worked best for me. They run about a half size or more too strong. For example I might normally be around a 2.5, 2-hard even a 3 or 3 soft on some reed brands, I found a 2.0 in the Venn worked perfectly. I read up on this before I bought and it turned out I was wise to do so. I have now been playing these exclusively for about 6 months, same rotation, no sign of wearing out. I couldn’t be more happy with these. ... show more

  • Great Reed
Size: Strength 2.5
Be warned, they are stiff!!! Great sound. And yes, they do break in, thank God. I'm not sure that they last longer then my Legere (also a great reed) but I prefer the sound of the Venn's.

  • Great Sound and Response!
Size: Strength 2.0
After playing synthetic reeds for awhile, I settled with the Legere reeds in 2015. But I decided to try the VENN G2 this last go around. The tone and response of this reed was INCREDIBLE from the time I put it on my mouthpiece!! So I practiced on it everyday from Monday when I got it until it time for my gig on Sunday. When I played it on the gig with amplification, it was simply AMAZING!! But here comes the missing star out of the 4 stars. At week 2, the reed split on me! I was so disappointed! I wanna love this reed and give it that 4th star, but I need you guys at D'Addario to fix that issue. I will circle back around when there is a G3! ... show more

  • Splitting tenor reeds
Size: Strength 2.5
I have been a Woodwind Pro for over 40 years. During this time, I have tried practically every synthetic reed that has come down the pike. After playing on Legeres for about a year, I came across the Venn G2 reeds and was immediately impressed with how natural they feel and sound. But I have decided to stop using them on tenor and here is why. The last few tenors that I have bought started splitting within a couple of weeks of playing and at $32 a reed it is just not cost effective. I haven't noticed this problem on alto or clarinet but my main instrument is tenor. UPDATE: D'ADDARIO was gracious enough to send me replacements for the split reeds but one of them split after 3 gigs in 4 days and the other just lost it's life after about a week. I thought I really liked Venn Reeds but splitting after 3 gigs is just not cost effective. Going back to Legere. ... show more

  • Decent enough for Marching Band, or wherever tone quality is forgiven.
Size: Strength 2.0
Plays well at first, and the strength number matches expectations. However, there is no "character" in the sound. Bland, blah. Poor tone gets worse in upper range. In short, it works, but you might not enjoy the sound of it.

  • Almost unplayble
Size: Strength 3.0
I was very excited to try a new synthetic after years of playing legere, however I might be sticking to legere. I purchased the reed a half strength down from my legere and it was still way to hard and it was a struggle to get a sound. It makes me think it was an error with the manufactuting which is normal with cane reeds but is very unfortunatewhen it is one $40 reed. ... show more

  • Pleasantly surprised
Size: Strength 2.5
I have been playing Legere Signatures for as long as I can remember. Tried many other synthetic reeds, and none came close. Well… these reeds may be it. They combine all the attributes of a Legere reed with the projection of a cane reed. The high register has substantially more body as well. A joy to play. Note of caution: their strength is higher than the number may indicate. I play 2.75/3 Legeres, and a Venn 2.5 is just as stiff as a Legere 3. ... show more
