  • so far so good
I haven't played on cane for decades but recently I wanted to see if I could change my tone and because synthetics seem to be getting worse. Synth reeds are really expensive but they can last for along time and they are great for just about anything, which is why I began playing them. Fibracell stopped making the reed that worked best for me. Now I hear from Steve Cole that D'Addario makes a great synthetic; I'll be checking it out too. To really evaluate these cane reeds one needs to play on the whole box, in my opinion. The things that are important are: Can I pick any reed from the box and play on it; does it warp easy; do I have to work it a lot to get it to play; will there be any dead reeds in this pack? I would get a box of LaVoz med hard and work those down to med soft. D'Addario has filed these reeds already so one might just need to seal one or all of them. So far, these seem to be good reeds. The 2.5 seems true to every 2.5 I've play on in the past of other brands. D'Addario I hear has a strength chart that should help you out with reed numbers and strengths. Again I would have to play on every reed in the pack to really be able to give a qualified review but I can't do that right now. All I can say is They look and feel and play like a quality reed and even though they are filed you can still work them if you know what you're doing. I haven't had one warp on me yet and I hope I never do. we'll see ... show more

  • Good General Purpose Reed
Long time saxophonist. For the most part these appear to be quality made reeds. I selected the 2.5 hardness to test on my Tenon made Chateau pro level tenor sax, which has been set up & serviced by K. Beason for years. I used 4 different mouthpieces and both metal (standard & H-Lig) and fabric (Rovner) ligatures; see photo. I randomly selected 2 reeds from the box of 5 to test. The first reed played more "stuffy" with less responsiveness for me. The second reed was an obvious & pleasant improvement -- more full sounding & resonant & better controlled. However, the second reed had a chip to the left side of the tip area, which did not occur from my handling it (see photo). Difficult to say if it was damaged during the manufacturing or packing process. D'Addario has elected to use cardboard versus higher quality plastic individual sleeves for their reeds now; don't know if this may have caused the reed damage or not. I do work on my own reeds to ensure they lay flat against the mouthpiece table and are shaped/thinned for maximum performance, although I have not attempted to modify the tested reeds as yet. My review is based upon how the reeds performed right out of the box. I was not as impressed with the performance of this reed for the tenor as I have been with similar reeds made for both the baritone & soprano saxophones by D'Addario. I have lived long enough to understand that quality control in manufacturing is an ongoing matter that requires vigilance and exact standards and sometimes issues can arise. I do recommend this reed for all levels of players, but with the understanding that slight modifications may be required as with most all reeds I have used over decades of time. ... show more

  • Good reeds. Not a 10 pack
Need to remove misleading statement that these are a ten pack.

  • Description say 10 and only 5 were received!
My son needed these for band immediately. The description said 10 and we only received 5. We are unable to return due to him needing them.

  • Nice quality reeds that lasted adequately
My nephew is in the High School Marching Band, playing saxophone. We gave these to him to try out. Getting long sentences from a seventeen-year-old is tricky, but he said they worked well and lasted a moderate amount of time, even with the heavy use he gave them.

  • Excellent new organic tenor sax reed
First things first. How many of us reed-playing woodwind musicians have even given a thought to whatever chemical residue from pesticides, herbicides and synthetic fertilizers we are putting in our mouths for so many hours? Until these certified organic reeds came our from D'addario, I hadn't. But that alone isn't enough reason for most of us to switch reeds, after spending years finding and perfecting our setup and sound. That's why when I mounted the first Reserve reed on my Yanagisawa tenor and blew the first few notes, I was excited by the quality of sound. I chose the filed 2.5 strength, which according to D'addario's Reed Strength Chart (which you can download from their website) is equivalent to their Select Jazz 3S and Vandoren Java 3.0 reeds. D'addario's environmental commitment even extends to their packaging, eliminating the usual plastic reed case for a thin cardboard sleeve. Each reed is individually sealed in clear celophane, preserving freshness. Each reed has the name and strength laser etched on the outside, instead of printed on the inside like most others. They claim that all their cane reeds will be organic by 2025. With their experience in producing at least 7 cane reed plus 2 synthetic reed models for a full range of instruments, I trust the company's dedication to producing the highest quality reeds. I'm enjoying these Reserve reeds, trying them with different mouthpiece and ligature setups. Though I prefer the D'addario Select Jazz reed for most of the types of music I play, these stiffer reeds offer a different dimension of sound. Kudos to D'addario for setting a new standard. ... show more

  • Good quality reeds, esp for those conscious about organics
First: The product title incorrectly lists these as a pack of 10. They come in a box of 5 reeds. (I think you can make out this information in the product package). I previously reviewed the soprano reeds, but the same comments apply here. From a "strength" standpoint, I'd say they feel they're a little harder than a standard Rico of the same measure, but that's a rough estimate. I like how I sound on these reeds - I used them with a Guardala King mouthpiece (a very bright mpc), and they seem to mellow some of the brightness from the sound - to be honest, that's what I want. :) If you're health and environmentally conscious, these might be reeds for you. ... show more
