  • Excellent Strings
Size: 1-Pack Style: Custom Light, 11-52
I read the review from an 80 year old man whose fingers hurt when playing until he bought these strings - that sold me. I always used medium strings on my acoustic guitar because I strum hard and had broken lighter strings in the past. But as I am 73 and have some arthritis, I have found it difficult to play for any extended time. However, after re-stringing my guitar with these strings, I played for two solid hours, accompanying a crowd of 80 singers, with absolutely no pain. And the sound was clear and no broken strings! ... show more

  • BEST acoustic guitar strings
Size: 1-Pack Style: Light, 12-53
I've been playing acoustic guitar for twenty years. I've tried every string I could get my hands on. I usually gravitate toward D'Addario strings. Their standard phosphor bronze strings are what I typically use. The last time I restrung my guitar, I purchased Ernie Ball Earthwood strings at the recommendation of my local music store. I HATED them. From the moment I put them on, my guitar sounded so dead and lifeless. It was like I had put six month old, tarnished strings onto my guitar. Everything was so dull and muted. Cue the D'Addario coated phosphor bronze strings. After that terrible experience, I decided to splurge and buy some "expensive" strings. I knew I liked D'Addario, so I figured I'd like expensive D'Addario too. I had high expectations and I was still blown away by these strings. Night and day compared to the Earthwood strings. My guitar was load and bright and sang so beautifully. From the very first moment I strung them onto my guitar, before it was even tuned, I knew. These were the strings for me. They sound just as good, if not better than the standard D'Addario phosphor bronze strings, but the coating makes them so much more playable. String noise is greatly reduced. The strings are so smooth that my fingers glide up and down the fretboard effortlessly. They've been on my guitar for a few weeks now, and they still look and play like they're brand new. No hint of tarnish anywhere on the strings. At over double the price of the standard phosphor bronze strings, I don't think these would be more cost effective. I don't think I'll get over double the life out of these over a standard set of strings, but the added playability and longevity more than makes up for the price difference to me. I'll probably use these strings for the rest of my life. ... show more

  • Great wrapped strings, plain steels need better coating though
Size: 3-Pack Style: Medium, 13-56
I absolutely love these strings. I have used Elixirs for over a decade now, and I never believed there would be a competitor in my mind. But then came the D'Addario XS strings. These strings keep their brightness longer than Elixirs in my opinion, with one exception: the high plain steel b and e strings get rusty relatively quickly and deaden much faster than the other strings. However, this is not to say that it majorly affects the sound, just something to be aware of. It affects the feel more than the sound, but it does still retain a fantastically bright and rich tone even after the high strings begin to deteriorate. These strings also have a little bit less of a breaking problem than Elixirs for me. I feel like I typically break the G string of my Elixirs after about a month and a half or so, but these strings will often last me 2-3 good months of regular heavy playing. I will most likely alternate between these strings and Elixirs with each string change, as they are equally excellent strings. ... show more

  • Little pricey

Great strings. Last a decent amount of time. Just depends on how much you play of course. Nice clean sound. I will definitely buy again

  • Preferred by my Luthier!
Size: 1-Pack Style: Light, 12-53
My luthier put these strings on my guitar when I was having him do a complete setup on my Martin guitar. Guess what, they are fantastic! I’ve been playing guitar for over 50 years and I’m-sold! They feel, play and sound great! The only strings I will ever use from here on out!

  • High performance -- at a high price
Size: 1-Pack Style: Extra Light, 10-47
Make sure you know what you want your strings to do. If, like many of us, you use the same guitars for practice, recording, and performance (= modern context), XS phosphor bronze strings could deliver just what you are hoping for. If you are fighting with a banjo through a mike, or no mike at all, look elsewhere, and good luck with that. Excessive string noise is no longer tolerable in recordings or performance, and the XS string surface gives a good edge and ring to notes while still offering excellent reduction in string noise. Therer are other brands that squeak even less, though that results in a less crisp and airy tone. You'll have to decide what balance you want; for me, XS nails it. Like most modern, coated strings, XS strings deliver a string-to string balance in volume and a kind of coherent chord tone that modern plkayers may find wonderful -- I do -- because it no longer obsesses with the piercing trebles and booming bass useful in acoustic bluegrass but unhelpful for many who are recording, or playing with amplification, or playing under a vocalist, etc. When the light buklb went off and I stopped obsessing with being the loudest, most cutting acoustic player possible, and realized I don't have to have cat-fight level finger noise, that my chords could be more musical and less "busy" sonically, and that notes played on any string could be more readily in balance with each other, I made the move first to Elixers (OK) and then the XS (great, IMO). My only complaint is that the price is high. I just don't believe that this is justified by production costs and feel like I'm getting screwed out of 3-4 extra bucks because these strings are marginally better than others. That's the price of capitalism, I guess. Soak the consumer. ... show more
