  • Initial impression: Terrible. Verdict after 2 months of playing them: really good.
Style: 1-Pack Size: Custom Light, 11-52
That might sound too drastic, but... I was replacing a set of Elixirs out of which I got 2,5 months of daily playing. I put on strings from low E to high E, getting each string in tune before I put on the next one. As I was tuning the G string, D string which I tuned right before it suddenly snapped. What the hack? I've been playing this particular guitar since 2012, but I decided to examine the G tuner hole to see if there was something wrong with its edge, but it was fine. So there goes another string from a different pack. Now on to the way they sounds on my jumbo Alvares. The sound is unbalanced, over bright, lacks in bass and is forced. But the true problem with these strings that they can only be played with a pick. I spend more time playing fingerstyle and these strings are like a perfect chainsaw for fingernails. Would I ever buy these string again? No. Would I put them on my guitar if somebody gave them to me as a gift? No. Would I give them to somebody as a gift? Well if I wouldn't like the person that they were going to strangulate with these strings - I would! 2 stars Amendment 1 After several weeks of playing I actually like the played-in sound. Upgrading my vote to 3 stars. Amendment 2 These strings still ruin my nails like no other strings ever have, when I strum strum them without a pick. But that aside, after two months of playing them daily with sweaty fingers, they still sound neither dull or nor muffled, but rather surprisingly pleasant and balanced. My favorite Elixir Polyweb would have lost their original sound by now and their famed coating would have pealed and be hanging off the strings. But these strings just keep going. Upgrading my vote to 4 stars. Amendment 3 Feb 1 2023 All right - it has been three months of playing these strings, at least an hour every day. And - despite them even sometimes being exposed to my cheddary fingers (wine + cheese + guitar), they still sound GOOD. This is truly remarkable. Yes, Polyweb keeps the bright side of played-in sound longer, but no strings have ever kept it up to such abuse without sounding like a dying cat. (I love cats.) ... show more

  • Excellent!
Style: 3-Pack Size: Custom Light, 11-52
Went back to D'addario's after several other string manufacturers. These are my favorite for my acoustics, Yairi, Taylor... Nice sound, good endurance and fair price. I consistently get a minimum of 3 months from a set, and I play a lot of chords for singing/songwriting. Even more time as I switch guitars for that sound for that song. Can't go wrong with D'Addario. Hope this helps. ... show more

  • Nice set of light strings but...
Style: 3-Pack Size: Light, 12-53
I am just learning to play guitar at 60. I bought these strings because I heard they are excellent for beginners and having 3 sets of strings for this price is great. Unfortunately instead of 3 sets of strings, I got 2 good sets and 1 set with 2 "D" strings and no "G" string. Kind of a bummer since that was the first set I opened and had to figure out they sent 2 "D" strings which I only learned by opening another pack of strings. Kind of a bummer from such a big company and of course had to happen to a beginner on his first order. But the strings sound great and are very easy to bend. ... show more

These are great strings. Sounds good and I've never had a bad string from D'Addario. Very consistent quality over the years.

  • Prepare for a finger workout!
Style: 3-Pack Size: Medium, 13-56
I put these strings on a cheap Donner guitar and an Epiphone PR-150. These strings will definitely require calluses, and if you don't have them yet it'll put them on for you: just be prepared to experience pain. Other than that, the strings sound nice and as expected, are tighter on the guitar: get the guitar adjusted to accommodate them if you plan on keeping the strings long term! Other than that, these strings work great for open tunings and playing with a slide because of the higher tension, but for regular strumming/picking/fingerstyle the pain is kinda unessecary: In conclusion: these strings hurt unless you are a seasoned player. Beginners, you'll be better off with a lower gauge cause the pain might discourage you. Nonetheless, these strings sound bold and the higher tension/thickness offers a challenge for guitarists who want one! ... show more
