  • Speedy, beautiful and worth it!!
Capacity: 64GB RAM | 2TB NVMe SSD
So first and foremost, the delivery was excellent. Signed for the package and it arrived on the earliest day it said it would. It took about a week to get here because it had to go through QA and (presumably) customized for the expanded drives and such. The good: - Not a lot of bloatware. It had many utilities to control lights and such pre-installed. Many of the other applications had checkboxes for first time use that you could uncheck if you didn't want them installed. Only trials that came through was for antivirus and an offer for Microsoft product trials. Aside from that, it was fairly clean. - Build quality is great. Mostly textured plastic but the underside has a huge metal screen that allows for breathing and a view of the internal components. Obviously, I wouldn't recommend getting it wet but it has sufficient airflow to keep the temps low and the fans quiet. - Fans are great! The noise level is nearly imperceptible. That being said, the majority of the air flow comes from the bottom with vents in the back. So, if you place it on a blanket or obstruct the bottom vents, it's gonna suck air through the back making the fans work harder and the temps to get toasty. Not the end of the world but if you got it for gaming, place it on a hard surface for maximum air flow. - Screen is beautiful. It's HD but not 4K. At 15 inches, it's sufficient and vibrant enough to make any game look crisp and clear. - Graphics card is a beast! It comes with 8Gb of VRAM and it makes for a gratifying experience. I haven't loaded many games on here but the ones that I did test, are crisp and clear. I did run into some issues with polygon rendering but updating the video drivers fixed that right up and it ran without any other issues. - Keyboard and lights are flashy but functional. You can switch between multiple profiles and colors in the lights (boasts thousands of configurations/ I saw about 6 presets) or you can turn them off altogether. Which is my preference for gaming to minimize distractions. I like the keyboard lights for programming languages in the dark. - Processors are fast and Windows interface is snappy. The bad: - You get what you paid for. There were other configurations with the same type of computer with lower specs that offered bundle features (mouse, headsets, backpack, etc.) but this version didn't and was priced on the premium end. Worth the price, but if you're looking for value, shop around a bit as there are numerous configurations that may offer the most bang for your buck. Especially if you aren't too worried on getting the latest specs. - Not a touchscreen. It wasn't advertised as one nor was I expecting it to be, just figured I'd put this here for clarity. - Speakers - advertised as giant speakers. They work fine. They are actually located near the front on the bottom of the laptop. They work by 'bouncing' the sounds from the surface of the laptop towards the user. This means that the material of the surface the laptop is sitting on and the distance from the laptop will affect the speaker quality experience. That being said, they have almost no bass. They sound fine for sounds and most tasks, but if you want immersive sound with bass, invest in a decent pair of headphones or external speakers. - Battery life - I was able to watch two episodes of a 45 minute show and the battery was consumed by about 40%. I haven't used it enough to see how long it would last till dying completely but at that rate, I would say that the battery would die after about 2 hours of gaming or watching movies. Overall the laptop looks great and works like a champ. Very happy with the purchase. I may modify my review after using it for a while, but for first impressions, I would give this a solid 4 to 4.5 stars. ... show more

  • This machine exceeded my expectations
Capacity: 64GB RAM
This laptop doesn't have the latest CPUs or chipset, and it does not have a Thunderbolt 3 port. Equivalent laptops with the same speed CPUs but newer chipsets and a TB3 port were nearly $500 more. I was prepared for an adequate gaming experience and ok with middle-of-the-road settings on game graphics and getting 40+ FPS. I've had this laptop for about 3 weeks. Other than the initial fun of getting all of the Windows updates to install (haven't gotten WSL2 working right yet, stopped trying, for now, not the laptop's fault), there have been few incidents of anything not working as expected. The only one that comes to mind was the sound output on a video conference call not working, but I blame Windows 10 because other sound output worked, and the sound works correctly the next day for a video conference. I installed one of my favorite games; one is a little older, Serious Sam Fusion. I was able to set Ultra mode on every graphics setting available and still get 60+ FPS on the in-built 60-second performance tests. For comparison, I installed Serious Sam 4, which was just released in August 2020 (I think, or close enough). I took its graphics setting recommendations and got 60+ FPS. I went 1x1 and turned every setting except GPU RAM to Ultra, the highest setting, and still got 47 FPS on multiple 60-second performance test scenarios. The amount of RAM on the Nividia GTX 1660 Ti wasn't enough to qualify as Ultra anymore, so I left that setting as is. I have a MacBookPro with 8-i9 processors with 32G of RAM, and this machine has 6-i7 processors with 64G of RAM. I load up my MacBookPro to the hilt with multiple 4 external 4k displays, etc. It's gotten slower due to the OS windowserver taking 1.8G of RAM. I've started doing work chores on my gaming laptop because it's just so rock-solid. This is my second CUK purchase (last was HP convertible 365 with 8-i9s & 4k touchscreen that my daughter uses now), and I will definitely consider purchasing from them again in the future. I was a little hesitant to buy an MSI laptop, and all I can say is that I am very pleased so far. The fan noise can be louder than I'd like at times, but no one on my conference calls noticed or said anything. I purchased an under-system far cooling system, powered by USB. I found that my Mac was putting out more heat than this unit and moved the cooler to the Mac. I highly recommend the latest generation of under-laptop cooling systems. I've had enough of laptops bulging because of the battery overheating and enlarging. The cooling system on this MSI seems very well thought out, and I haven't had a problem. --note that if you purchase an under laptop cooling unit, be sure to get one with a lip on the bottom or has an anti-slide or grip system so that the laptop doesn't slide off. I use an elevated stand/mount for the laptop. With the laptop in the air, sliding off is a greater concern. Do I wish I'd spent the extra money to get Gen 10 i9 CPUs and perhaps a GTX 2080 TI with more RAM? Maybe—I think it would have been gratuitous. The minor difference it may have provided wasn't worth my money right now; this MSI gaming laptop from Computer Upgrade King rocks. ... show more
