  • So far best axe I've bought especially for the money. Buy it
Style: 6 lb. Axe
I bought this on sale just because I wasn't to sure about the design. I split my own wood and only use wood to heat my house. I have to say so glad I did. I'm 5'8 155lbs absolutely perfect fit for my size. I used to use an 8lb husky I felt like I just couldn't get the speed I needed with that axe. I'm telling ya I can get this going what feels like twice as fast. What used to take 2 hits with the 8lb I can do in 1 with this 6lb. So much more momentum. This is a wood splitting machine. Wish I'd bought this sooner. Happy with the feel as well. Overstrike works great. Came sharpe. I recommend even not on sale. This makes me wanna keep chopping wood 😁 I could go on but I'm guessing you get the point. Update real quick. It's about the same as my 8lb maul on hardwood like cherry. I can swing faster but the cheeks could be a little wider for hardwood. So it's about the same when it comes to that. Pine it kicks butt ... show more

  • Amazing axe/splitter. Love the new design from Crescent!
Style: 6 lb. Axe
This has to be one of the nicest wood splitters I’ve ever used. The ergonomics are unbelievably perfect in my opinion (mainly the grip and overall contour/shape). I’ve used wood splitters for over 20 years and the construction of this is the best I can remember. Love the fact the handle is protected from damage by the steel sheathing through the striking point. Those unaware of this size, it’s perfect for splitting wood or taking down small trees and brush but if you’re wanting a splitter that doubles as a sledge, you’ll need to pick the 8lb version. This is pricier than many on the market but those do not come with protection from missed strikes nor a lifetime warranty. Specifically many of the $20-$50 range have bad steel, cheap handles, or both and I’ve had some break on the first missed strike. The sharpness of the Crescent head and ability to hold an edge are unlike any I’ve seen at this price point. For reference, I’ve split probably 200-400 cords of firewood and have used everything from old, wooden handles and cheap Walmart gigs to expensive name brand and this truly is the best splitter of them all. I would be happy to pay $80-$100 for such an impressive tool; literally cannot think of any I’ve seen that I’d trade this for. Incredible build quality and highly suggested. ... show more

  • Worked well on mesquite
Style: 6 lb. Axe
I had some trees I had to take down and I used this to make them into more usable pieces. First off I had to give the edge some work on the belt grinder to get it where I like it but that happens with 99% of hardware store axes and splitting axes so it wasn't that big a deal. The handle feels solid and has a good grip on the bottom and smooth up top and felt good and controllable the whole time I used it. The head is a nice size chunk of metal that includes an overstrike area so I doubt you can break this unless you really really tried and ran over it with a tank or something. It even includes a nice blade guard to protect the edge when in storage. Nicest splitting axe I own might look into their sledge hammers next. ... show more

  • Premium Splitting Axe with some really great features.
Style: 6 lb. Axe
Im using this to replace a wood handle splitting wedge that has served me well for years and the difference is night and day. This axe is probably double the price of what I paid for the old axe but it has some features that make it worth it for me. Firstly the fiberglass handle does an excellent job of absorbing the shock of hitting logs. I find that I can use this for much longer without my arms and wrists getting sore. It has a nice grip at the bottom so it doesnt get slippery from sweat and the knob at the bottom gives additional security and leverage. The attachment at the head is reinforced by metal guards, so when you miss the log it's not going to damage the fiberglass. This guard extends about 5 inches down the handle on both sides so you have a good margin of error whether you use the splitting end or the hammering end. The blade is honed to a semi sharp point. This is meant for splitting so the blade is more short and wide rather than sharp and narrow. I wouldn't use this blade to fell a tree, you'll be disappointed, it tends to bounce off even small trees. But if you need to split firewood from logs, this axe works perfectly. The 6lbs of weight is concentrated at the end of the handle so you get quite a bit of slipping force. Comes with a nice blade guard for transport. Honestly, I'd probably pay 100+ dollars for an axe like this, so at 70 bucks it's a really good price. ... show more

  • Awesome Splitting Axe
Style: 6 lb. Axe
I grew up splitting wood with my dad and recently had a few trees my brother and I had to split. I saw this and thought it looked like a great tool that I needed to have and I was not wrong. It is extremely well made and has reinforcing features that make it the best of the best in my opinion. I really think that it would be impossible to break the head off this one and the weight of it is perfect. Splits wood like a champ, arrived very sharp and holds an edge well. I love the ergonomic feel of the handle and like that it comes with a sheath that actually lasts and is not just a plastic cover. It was fun to split wood again and revisit memories of my childhood, especially with this really well made beast of a splitting axe. ... show more

  • Marginal handle protection
Style: 6 lb. Axe
The over strike protection leaves both sides of the handle exposed to damage. The side pictures of the maul in the listing don't show you the full picture. It protects the handle from some over strikes but not from splintered wood or twisted grain. If you want 360 degree handle protection get the Halder Simplex maul. The only downside with that maul is how much it costs. ... show more

  • Well Made Splitting Axe
Style: 6 lb. Axe
When I was a kid many years ago and working around the house and fixing cars with my dad and older brother, there was a tool that we called a “Crescent Wrench” that always came in handy. This was the ubiquitous adjustable wrench but we always referred to it by the brand name, whether it was actually made by Crescent or not, just like the products we call Kleenex and Band Aid. I mention this in my review because I believe that the quality and design of this Crescent splitting axe honors the legacy of that brand name. I have included a picture of one of my Crescent Wrenches with this review to emphasize that. The design of this splitting axe seems to place it as something of a hybrid between a chopping axe and a splitting maul. I don’t think this would split large logs as well as a true splitting maul but should do fine on smaller pieces of potential firewood. Also, I believe that you would be able to use this tool as a conventional axe, especially if you did not have one on hand. A unique feature of this axe is the steel head/blade that extends about 5 inches down the handle. This is called Headlock by Crescent and is designed to prevent damage to the handle from overstrikes. I have damaged or destroyed the wooden handle on my axes and mauls more than once from my poorly aimed blows on unsuspecting pieces of firewood, so I think that this is a great feature. It is not firewood season here in the Northeast where I live, so I have not yet had a chance to try this axe out but I think, when I do, it will work well. At a current Amazon selling price of about $70, this splitting axe is not cheap. Especially considering you can but a conventional splitting maul for half that. But I think the Headlock feature will help provide a tool that will outlast a conventional tool by a wide margin. ... show more
