She shows you how to use dots, fine lines, brushstrokes, black and white, color—a mixture of mediums and techniques—to suggest: • glass • cast iron • adobe and brick • sunrise and sunset • driftwood • leaf textures • basketry • surf and ocean waves • enamelware • rainbows • wood grain • distant trees • eggs and onions • animal hair • and dozens of other textures! • Well Written and Easy to Follow
Lots of excellent instruction next to the pictures, and therefore, lots of pictures. This is an excellent book to learn strokes and blending and etc. Great for Water Colors and Oils as well. The only "negative" for me is that the writing is in a funny script form which is sometimes hard to read. But if I read for context I can figure it out. Still, this is a very helpful tool for art painting. ... show more

  • Packed with useful info for any watercolorist
I’m sure plenty of experts already know the techniques described in this book, but if you’ve never thought about how pen & ink could enhance your watercolor pieces then I highly suggest this book. The only technique I was familiar with was more abstract - using a black fineliner to define boundaries & then ignoring those boundaries with watercolor. Im not a huge fan of this technique, it’s just not my thing, so I didn’t even consider buying this book for a while. But it kept being suggested to me, and after looking at the reviews I decided to see what all the fuss was about. I was very impressed with the various methods presented by the author. There’s no abstract here - the author uses various techniques to enhance realistic watercolor pieces with the subtle use of ink. Watercolor is the focus of this book…I have many watercolor books, all of them beautiful, but this book is one of a kind. ... show more

  • Bought for Crosshatching Instruction, got SO much more!
I was perplexed by cross hatching and haven't seen good instruction on it beyond "just, you know, hatch more where there is more shading needed." So I purchased this book, which is one of the very few books I could even find on amazon. Wow. Not ONLY did this ABSOLUTELY give crosshatching info THROUGHOUT the book (not just a small excerpt!), but it was done in conjunction with OTHER pen shading (contour lines, stippling ((dots)), scribble, wavy lines, parallel lines, criss cross lines) AND PAIRED with (not separate from) using OTHER media of tools (saran wrap, toothbrushes, string) and medium (alcohol, watercolor, SALT!!!, etc). So you don't give up on one lesson in favor of a new idea. The salt is PAIRED with the ink technique. Overall, I'm so incredibly impressed with this book. Not only for delivering the pen shading lessons I hoped for, but for doing it throughout the book in entirety!. This is done in a manner that Atypically extends beyond traditional art books set-ups, which is the modest inclusion of chapters relevant to the book's title, with THAT purchase promise then traditionally sandwiched by fluff chapters of unrequested randomness. You know, as most art books, and general non-fiction books, typically do. A+, highly recommend. ... show more

  • Love the book - but...
I wish Amazon would do a better job of packaging for shipping - it was jammed down in the envelope causing the a big section of the front cover corner to be bent completely back in a hard crease that will remain permanent now - on a brand new book.

  • Packed with ideas and inspiration!
In love with this book! I bought it on a bit of a whim. Have been working in watercolor for a while but thought I would take a look at how mixing ink and watercolor could be used. Wow! This book really opened my eyes to how much can be done with this mix. Seems like much of what I see is an ink drawing with some washes of watercolor, but this artist/author does such a great job of showing how the two media can be employed as a unified approach to projects. Really well organized with clear explanation of different techniques! ... show more

  • THE BEST BOOK!
I have a lot of watercolor books, probably more than any one person ought to hoard. But this is the best one I've ever seen. Extremely well organized and loaded with colored illustrations, Claudia Nice presents her material in a logical and easy to follow manner. She writes so clearly that the book isn't burdened with unnecessary text, burt rather succinct lines of how she achieved her results. Frequently she includes her palettes. I'm using this as a textbook, copying her demonstrations (today I did animal eyes, for instance). I was taking a local art class and left in the middle of it yesterday when the teacher - for the 2nd week in a row - threw a picture up on the screen and told us to paint it while he devoted the rest of our class time to painting his own art. I was frustrated as I didn't have a clue how to paint what was on the screen. I came home saddened and very discouraged, not wanting to sketch or paint. Today, I pulled out THIS book and I'm back on track. I spent 1 1/2 hours studying/painting 1 page of this book and learned more than I did with 25 hours of instruction for the last 2 art classes I've taken. I have 2 of her other books also and can't wait to jump into them too. I cannot recommend this book highly enough! ... show more

  • Creating Textures in Pen & Ink with Watercolor
I received this book a couple of days ago and as soon as I started leafing through the pages I was a bit disappointed. After further perusal the disappointment was somewhat abated. The author has an easy way of explaining the hows and whys in the first chapter. There really is some useful information there! The remaining chapters are divided into types of textures and techniques, i.e., metal, fur, trees, skies, etcetera. This is where I found myself wishing for more detailed instruction. Don't get me wrong, the information that is provided is useful and the images show nice pen & ink detail, I just want more detail about how to accomplish the textures shown with watercolor. I would also like (and expected) to see at least 3 or 4 more step-by-steps as on p.37 with the surf and ocean waves. I haven't done pen & ink in many many years and this book makes me itchy to get started again, which is why I made the purchase. So, to that end thank you Ms. Nice. ... show more

  • Beautiful book
The entire book is so beautiful and such quality I'm tempted to use it as a "coffee-table book." If you're looking for how-to create texture of any kind and add that depth and uniqueness to your painting, I highly recommend buying this book. The author's explanations are complete and easy to follow. The illustrations are amazing, beautiful and inclusive -- from how to paint glass to water, to rocks, sky, wood grain, trees, floral, grasses, still life, lace and textile, animals, sea life, butterflies and birds. This book is amazing. ... show more
