  • An almost essential tool for 3D printing
Color: Sonic Pad
When I first purchased this for my 3d Printer, I was afraid that the process for installing Klipper would be just as difficult as it has been in the past for me, but I was pleasantly surprised. This device is really almost entirely plug and play with a helpful screen and tutorial to walk you though setting up your printer. It has almost become essential for me and I can't imagine myself without it now as it adds so much convenient functionality to my printer. My favorite part about the Sonic Pad has to be that once you calibrate your printer, you're able to print at much higher print speeds while not sacrificing much in the way of print quality. It offers far more than that, allowing you to expand the ways you have in controlling your 3D Printer, from the bright and large 7 inch tablet display of the Sonic Pad itself to pretty much any device that has access to the internet and can open a web browser. Not to mention you're able to set up features like webcams and timelapsing and even AI detection for failed prints. There are some issues however that I hope will be fixed in time with firmware updates. First, sometimes the screen can be unresponsive when you're trying to cancel or start a print and I've had my printer refuse to trigger any of the end stops randomly and my bed probe has even stopped working randomly. These things never happened to me before the firmware change. A quick restart can fix these issues, however it's still a bit frustrating to deal with considering the price. Also, while setting up your printer is somewhat detailed, other calibrations that you might want to do are left to you to figure out, meaning if you have never done it before or don't know the correct way to do so... you might struggle to do it right. Overall, I love this device and I think anyone who is into 3D Printing should snag one up! If not for anything, grab one for the ease of use in installing Klipper! ... show more

  • Great, but still needs work
Color: Sonic Pad
So this isn't something a beginner in 3d printing should get. It's capable of lots of things but it does require a good deal of setup. For the supported printers I'm sure it works fine out of the box but it can use almost any other printer out there. You just have to compile the klipper binary for the board that you have, flash it to your board, and provide the sonic pad a clean printer.cfg that will get it connected. After that there's a ton of calibration and configuration to do to make it print properly. There are features that it could support on every printer but doesn't. It won't let you connect to creality cloud without a specific printer for example. All in all its worth the buy. I just wish it could handle a usb hub and didn't have 2 ports on the side that you immediately have to use for connecting to your printer. Oh you can plug in a network cable but I suggest forgetting the wifi if you do. Otherwise it'll have 2 network connections and it'll get confused and not work properly. ... show more

  • Makes calibration simple, makes printing faster, could use some updates, expensive
Color: Sonic Pad
I have been using the Sonic Pad with my Ender 3 for a few months, mostly on weekends. It makes some things easier, and I am printing about 50% faster, but I have also run into a bug or two, and there are a few things I don’t like very much. Basic Setup Setting my printer up to work with the Sonic Pad was pretty simple. Although basic setup will not allow you to print super fast just yet, it does make calibrating the printer easier, and you can still use the printer at normal speeds. You will also now be able to send files to your printer over WIFI, or with a USB thumb drive, and monitor the printer remotely from your computer or phone. No more fiddling with the microSD card slot. You can add a USB webcam and monitor your prints from anywhere if you download a app to your phone. If you have a printer with a basic screen and scroll wheel, the Sonic Pad will be your primary interface, and you will no longer be using the old screen. I was able to add a USB webcam pretty easily. There is a dedicated port on the back of the Sonic Pad in addition to the 3 USB ports for connecting printers. PID tuning the hot end and heated bed is really easy with the Sonic Pad. It only takes some tapping on the sonic pad, and waiting 6 minutes or so as the pad cycles the heating elements. The X and Y axis of my calibration cube were dead on. The Z axis steps required a small adjustment that took some math and typing the new number into the Sonic Pad. The extruder was dead on. I have an all-metal hotend, a MicroSwiss, and changing the maximum nozzle temperature is as simple as typing a different number in the advanced settings, and then restarting the Sonic Pad. To do the same thing with Marlin firmware requires downloading some software and calibration files for your mainboard and printer, and then finding the maximum temperature settings, changing them, recompiling a custom firmware, and then uploading the firmware to your printer. Editing Marlin firmware that many printers use will not be a simple thing for most people to do. I can create and edit hot end and heated bed temperature presets in the web portal, but I have not found a way to edit or add presets in the pad yet. Advanced Setup The Sonic Pad creates Klipper firmware for the printer that can use input shaping to prevent resonant frequencies and vibrations from ruining your print when printing at high speeds. You can do this from the Sonic Pad, but you will need to print out a couple fixtures to hold the included accelerometer to the bed and the hot end assembly of your printer. The bracket for the hot end was included on the USB drive that came in the package. I had to go to thingiverse and download a bed mount. The Sonic Pad also has a setting for pressure advance. The pressure advance setting prevents bulging on corners. You will need to send some gcode to the Sonic Pad with the web UI, run a test print, make a measurement, do some multiplication, and type the number into the Sonic Pad. It sounds more complicated than it really is. Because the Sonic Pad is rather expensive, you should really consider whether you want to upgrade your old printer, or just upgrade to a faster printer. With bedslinger printers in particular, there is a limit to how fast you can go before belts slip and ruin your print. Bugs and Issues: I had a print fail twice on me with “motion out of range” errors before even starting to print. After rebooting the Sonic Pad, I ran the same gcode again, and it ran fine. After initial setup with the configuration settings from Creality, the acceleration settings were so high that the Y-axis belt would slip and cause layer shifts, even though I had the belt tension as tight as I could get it without causing drag. Perhaps if I weren’t using the heavy glass bed (it came with my printer!), then I wouldn’t have this problem? If you want to have the screen shut off after a few minutes of idle time, it is difficult to “wake up” the screen again. I have to tap on the screen multiple times to get it to turn on again. Conclusion: The Sonic Pad does make calibrating the printer much easier. It will allow you to print nice square corners, which is nice. I am printing faster than I was with Marlin firmware, but I’m still working on finding realistic maximum print speed and acceleration settings. The pad makes 3D printing simple and more accessible to people that aren’t very tech-saavy, while also offering some advanced features for more experienced or adventurous users. Klipper firmware is easier to edit than the Marlin firmware that many printers use. I might be proven wrong at sometime in the future, but I think Marlin firmware is a dying breed. I’m kind of irritated that there doesn’t seem to be a way to edit filament preset temperatures, or add additional filament presets in the pad settings for use in the pad itself. Creality should update the setup to include adaptive bed meshing (KAMP), finding instructions for setting up adaptive meshing on the Sonic Pad took me a few days, and a few failed attempts.
