The media could not be loaded. We have a fire burning stove as our main heat source. We are also seasonal campers so all year we have to deal with cutting and breaking down wood logs. It can get pretty costly if you buy it. We have a log splitter but this kindling cracker is perfect to take regular sized logs and turn them into smaller pieces of kindling. You place the log in the top and use the included mallet and smack it down and it breaks the wood up into smaller pieces. The smaller pieces are necessary to get a good fire going. They include a bag for you to store everything in so it is neatly away when not in use. I have used this a bunch of times and it always works perfectly. The media could not be loaded. For what it is, I really like it. A king of kindling. To begin, I divided my rounds into smaller pieces. The smaller pieces went through the splitter after that. The blade isn't particularly sharp, and it isn't need to be. To begin, simply place the wood on the blade and tap it with a 3 pound hammer. Remove your hand from the wood and a couple of good hammer blows will yield finely cut kindling. Sure, it can "split" larger wood, but "gas splitters" are available for that. The media could not be loaded. The blade is sharp enough to split kindling easily and not cause accidental cuts. The trick is first to hammer gently to fix the log on the wedge, and then you can beat away. The splitter and fire poker is very portable, and I can't wait to take them out camping with us next time.     • Sturdy piece of equipment
First trying to split a log was difficult and took way too much effort.... that's because it was too big with knots in all the wrong places. Some practice on picking out a better piece and letting the hammer and gravity do alot of the work i got the hang of it and it turns one solid piece into 4-6 small pieces and leaves behind a bunch of wood chips. Perfect amount needed to crisscross the pieces to get a nice fire started, and i was able to add a piece or two of larger logs right from the start. It's like an inverted axe. The cutting part is very blunt so you do have to put some force into it but this thing seems sturdy enough to last for a very long time. And the company added a convenient drawstring bag so you can cover it and store it for the summer. Mine didn't come with one but after inquiring about it customer service was quick and extremely helpful with helping me get one. good quality hard construction, there are screws that come with the splitter, if you can find someting to screw it down to I would, mallet is very sturdy
